I'm locked down on Twitter, so I can't respond there, but what's your source on the rest of the animal not being used in fur farming?
Google is telling me the opposite - that the rest of the animal is used in things like pet food - but obviously a lot of sources are going to be biased.
I tried to answer this like 3 times yesterday and each time tumblr crashed whenever I tried to add a link so 😭
The tldr version is that the point I was trying to make is that leather is a byproduct of the meat industry while furs like mink and fox are not. If leather was banned tomorrow, the amount of cows dying wouldn’t decrease because that’s not the primary purpose of cattle/dairy farms. If fur was banned, then fur farms would just stop being a thing because that’s the primary purpose of them.
The leftover carcasses after pelting can be utilized in other areas, the main ones being either fuel, shampoos/cosmetics, fertilizer, etc, but they’re not an essential part of any of those products. But there aren’t any hard statistics on what percentage of things like mink are actually processed into other products, and although it can be used for them, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the majority of it is.
That’s largely also because at least in America, there is virtually zero regulation of the fur industry with very little federal oversight. So there aren’t standards for how the rest of the animal should be utilized beyond maybe some local laws about not disposing of them in a way that’s toxic to humans. You might have some places use them for like bait or leather oil, or they could just be incinerating them and calling it a day.
At least with mink, processing it isn’t really very convenient either.
All of that, but also, even if the leftover animals were being used to the highest degree, it doesn’t undo the extremely large environmental impact fur farming has. I have no fucking clue why people on twitter are calling fur a more sustainable option than faux fur because it’s genuinely just super not true? Fur is more environmentally damaging than every other textile and the climate impact it has on other fabric material is barely even comparable.
Like even ignoring anything to do with animal rights and ethics around it, fur farming is just incredibly polluting while being wholly unnecessary for the majority of people.
