My girl is an icon and we regularly turn this photo of her into a meme when men in our department say/do stupid things.
Crucially, Alfred Wegener, "the guy" OP is talking about made a lot of valuable observations, but wasn't able to explain established phenomena.
Wegener's ideas fell apart as soon as someone asked questions like "so how did these continents drift apart?" because all he had was some interesting observations (for example, Wegener noticed that fossils from identical species could be found an ocean apart, but almost as if they had a natural range across two specific areas that were at some point connected).
Without Marie Tharp, Wegener's ideas would have just been interesting food for thought, not a fully developed robust scientific understanding allowing us to predict volcanic eruptions and earthquakes and allowing us to understand continental drift.
It's wild that Wegener's ideas were dismissed as amateurish and Tharp's discoveries and huge quantities of data analysis dismissed as "girl talk". But they sure changed the face of geology and Marie Tharp specifically has saved lives through her diligent charting of the sea floor and her discovery of that rift and its movement.
I...tried to make a meme and got carried away and made A Thing that is like partially unfinished because i spent like 3 hours on it and then got tired.
I think this is mostly scientifically accurate but truth be told, there seems to be relatively little research on succession in regards to lawns specifically (as opposed to like, pastures). I am not exaggerating how bad they are for biodiversity though—recent research has referred to them as "ecological deserts."

Okay so technically with the whole ‘Europe Isn’t a continent, if we go by tectonic plates it’s true, because Europe and Asia share a plate.
But then we get to stuff like the Central American plate, the Indian plate, the Arabian plate, etc.
Which basically means that if we base continent on tectonic plates we get: North, south, and Central America, Eurasia, India, Arabia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, The Philippines, Scotia, and more I’m probably forgetting.
The problem is: only a few of these actually fit the definition of continent - Australia, Antarctica, and North and South America.
Why? Because they are some of the world’s primary continuous expanses of land. I suppose Eurasia could be combined, but basing it off tectonic plates is… not great.
But back to the original part of the post - do canals actually count as breaking this continuity? Well, there are some rivers that certainly would get in the way, so those at least don’t count, so if there’s something that makes a canal count but a river not, then you could argue for that.
I, however, don’t really see any argument for why a canal would suddenly break that continuity that wouldn’t exclude rivers in some way though.
So I guess add Africa to Eurasia.

Unfortunately we don’t encounter many Aliens/Fae/Eldritch Horrors/Etc. on the job so there isn’t much need unfortunately.
I’ve seen a few ~aesthetic~ photos of rock stacks in rivers recently and this is just a reminder that you are destroying habitat when you move rocks around in rivers and streams.
In addition to dragonfly nymphs, rocky river beds are home to lots of other larval invertebrates like damselflies, mayflies, water beetles, caddisflies, stoneflies, and a bunch of dipterans. Not to mention lots of fish and amphibians!
Plus large scale rock stacking can change the flow of a stream and lead to increased erosion.

We actually have some issues of people stacking rock and whatnot at some of our gauges - with that exact sign telling people not to as well.
Please, try and leave the environment alone if you can. It’s a lot better for the plants and animals.

Okay as funny as it would be to ghost y’all after my previous post, I am actually back (sort of).
Things have been going well, I’ve just been busy with life and such. And rn work has been going hard on stuff. Last two weeks were nearly 90 hours long both times because of how much we have to get done.
So yeah. Don’t expect a ton of posts since things aren’t looking like they’re going to slow for a bit, but I am alive and I will try and post more often if I can
