The story of Die Hard is founded entirely on the basis that Federal systems and the police are morally objectionable and not something anyone could ever depend on. Think about it, and fair warning I just watched this so major spoilers ahead, but it was also made in 1988, get over it. Anyways, think about the police reaction to John Mclain's cries for help. When he pulled the fire alarm to alert someone to an emergency, the firefighters turned around before reaching the building. Why? Because the terrorists called and said that the building's systems were on the fritz, so that's fair. But then John CALLED THEM. ON THE RADIO. So he phones in and is all like "Guys, there are hostages, and we have a problem, and I'm here inside, please send help" and the radio operator was all like "Erm, sir, you do know this is a secure channel? It's only for emergency nonsense." So John goes "THERE ARE TERRORISTS HERE, LADY, GET ME SOME HELP!!" And the lady goes "um... No." Until John started getting shot at which is ridiculous. So she sends Al, whom I love, say one bad word about Al and I'm banning you from my life. And blocking you. Anyways, so the lady sends sergeant Al Powell and he gets there and WALKS IN. So he goes in and he walks around and then leaves, no further questions, and he only realizes there's danger because John THROWS A DEAD BODY AT HIS CAR. So then he calls in backup, and his boss is incompetent. The boss tries to take the radio from Al and John doesn't like him at all so Al gets it back, but this boss is THE WORST. I wish he died. I hate him. And this boss sends a team of police in, and they get killed because oh, I don't know, TERRORIST ATTACK IN PROGRESS?? And he tries to pull him back but his special "I build and run teams" guy goes "no, no, they're right at the door, let them go in." And the boss is all like "are you stupid, obey me." And of course that doesn't happen and the people explode, which is sad, and nobody even lingers on that. Fast forward, the FBI gets there, and the folks immediately start following protocol, but their protocol is shitty and actively assisting Hans and co. So they get Hans a helicopter like he asked for, and then they get on it and fly up, but as they do that the white guy agent (I can't be bothered to remember his name) says "I figure we'll nail the terrorists and have a 10-20% hostage loss." Sir. Those are people you're talking about. And let's say there's 40 hostages, that's AT LEAST 4 people dead, people with families and lives, and things they love. But yeah, these guys should be the hostage negotiators. Anyways, my main point is that Die Hard would have been resolved in an hour if the systems set in place by the government, police, and FBI were different and actually did some good instead of just "follow procedure, kill bad guy." This has been my Ted Talk (Bad synopsis of) about Die Hard. Thanks for reading, I guess, I will be back after watching Die Hard 2.
