Solidus has such an interesting mind. I’m sure most of my fascination is due to the fact that, of all the Big Boss clones, we know the least about him. But still. I think something that isn’t mentioned nearly enough in regards to Solidus is how Raiden was literally a guinea pig to him.

Solidus did what he did to Raiden, and presumably the other child soldiers in his “care” (can’t think of how to phrase it sorry), as a nature vs nurture thing. He didn’t just condition Raiden to be a killer because he’s cruel and evil, it was an experiment.

Solidus was 17-25 during the first Liberian civil war. That’s still so young. What he did to Raiden has always read to me as a kids killing cats situation, if you know what I mean. Someone young doing something unbelievably cruel. It’s chilling. And it’s especially interesting when you think about how he was trying to understand himself through Raiden and the other boys. Of course I’m just assuming he already knew he was a clone at this point, but it had to be because he was questioning his own free will and nature.

I don’t really have a conclusion to this at all, just that Solidus is interesting and I wish we knew more about him. Especially considering he was sort of the most “right” out of all the Metal Gear villains. I like how a character that is so casually cruel is also one of the easiest to understand. He was evil, absolutely, but he also just wanted to be free. Like Raiden.

A recent interview of Kane Parsons (The Backrooms) about his influences brought up Portal, reminding me of my own love for it. This compounded with my fascination for Project Hail Mary, and the community of artists and writers adding their own spin to that universe.

So, here’s my snapshot theory for how two space-buds might stay sane in the lightyears between Tau Ceti and Erid.

Some Creative Liberties:

The mug next to Grace is a mixture of coma slurry and Taumoeba paste, cut with an increasingly meaningless amount of coffee flavouring. Rocky understands that Grace needs time, distractions, and judgement-free public-eating acceptance to get through it.

The porting of Portal to the Hail Mary screen room system has somehow allowed a 360-degree field-of-view that is not available in the game’s settings normally.

Hail Mary was shipped with a game controller. In an unfortunate coincidence, it was the same generic brand as a certain ill-fated Titanic-tourism submersible company. This was raised frequently in Stratt’s post-launch international criminal trials.

Doug Rattmann’s wall art is, in my opinion, very similar to Clark’s, even incorporating the phases of the moon and the o’s in Clark’s are red and blue, i think doug does that as well in some of his pieces, but like if this was a reference it’s really funny since Doug is from PORTAL.
