So fun fact I work in a place where sometimes I get home and I know I’m having a tampon emergency but also my hands are NOT clean enough to go poking around down there. Here’s how you do:

1) get in the bathtub. You’re going to be squatting, with your legs as far apart as you can. Think football linebacker meets Slav squat. I recommend doing this while facing the wall so you can use your hands to balance.

2) push. You’re going to be using the same muscles you use when your bladder is being stupid about letting you finish taking a pee. It may take a couple of pushes, but the tampon will pop free unless it’s super-dry, so I’m assuming a cup should also pop free since it’s not made of absorbent cotton.

3) congratulations, it’s a menstrual product!

4) discard the tampon or rinse the cup using the tub faucet and set it aside.

5) use the tub faucet, or showerhead if you have a removable one, to clean up your legs and vulva. Unfortunately this removal process is going to be messy and there’s no way around that, which is why you do this in the tub to begin with.

6) if you’re me this is the part where you speedwalk to wash all the industrial ink off your hands before changing your product, but if you’re not me you can probably skip to putting on a pad.

Tip: do not try to do this over a toilet. I tried the balance once just out of curiosity to see if it could be done, and while I did not fall I realized it would be incredibly easy to do so.

Y’know, I’ve never once been harassed for wearing a mask in public. And I don’t live in some liberal utopia where most people are still masking - I live in a purple-leaning-red suburb in a red-leaning state where I’m often the only person wearing a mask in whatever building I’m in. But nobody even looks at me funny. I certainly believe people who have been harassed, but I wonder how widespread it actually is. So here is a poll:

Just wanted to add on to this a concrete example: a couple years ago the Hawaiian government implemented water rationing FOR LOCALS ONLY, while continuing to allow tourists to use as much water as they wanted for fancy hotels, spas, pools, and GOLF COURSES. This is obviously the exact opposite of how water shortages should be addressed. I don't even think many of the tourists had any idea that the water they used on vacation was literally being taken from the homes of indigenous people: many tourists think they are helping local economies. I would LOVE to visit Hawaii and see amazing Polynesian biomes and active volcanoes without a passport, but I have resigned myself to the fact that there is currently no ethical way for me to do so. Visiting Hawaii would take needed resources from the people who live there, and the tourism industrial complex would actively lie to me about it if I tried to travel there in an ethical or sustainable manner. The US has really plundered those amazing islands and done so much harm to them in so many ways. Native Hawaiians are begging tourists to stay away. So please take their demands seriously and enjoy Hawaii's amazing natural wonders through video instead of in person.

While residents are being told to cut back, water-reliant resorts are bustling.

After almost a decade on this site, I found another Tumblr user in the wild. I stopped to tie my shoe with rainbow laces this morning outside the silversmith at Colonial Williamsburg, and I heard it.

“I like your shoelaces.”

Oh. Oh no.

I responded the only way I could. “Thanks.” And then I reluctantly added, “I stole them from the president…and if that makes sense to you, I’m very sorry.”

The poor man, in full Colonial dress, stared at me for a long moment. And then burst into laughter. And said, “I haven’t thought about that in YEARS and this has never happened to me before.”

This is an EXTREMELY blessed post! And accurate! When I first moved out I was so excited for my new place I slept on the floor and had my tv there and that was it. Loved it.
