penelope did a little jump for joy as she made her way over to the stranger. “well, then you’re the perfect person for me today.” she said with a giddy laugh. “does your fancy book say anything about this stone?” she asked as she pulled a purple stone out of her pocket. it was polished smooth to the touch with light lavender streaks through it. “i really can’t go in there and ask howl again. he’ll accuse me of not listening, which i wasn’t, and then his ego will be hurt and he might stop giving me stones to help with stuff… but i just sometimes zone out when he’s going on and on.” penelope explained as her big blue eyes went doe and she blinked practically pouting for their help.

he was no expect on stones. otherwise he’d have figured out what kind of stone was back home. varian was no geologist, but he had read enough books on rocks to be able to figure out what type some were. as long as it was a rock and not something else. “yeah, i’m happy to help. not sure how much this book is going to be.” varian looked at the stone and bit down on his lip. he wasn’t entirely sure what it was. “if anything, i can ask what it is and you can just go around the corner.” he flipped through a few pages and hummed at the different options there were that this stone could be in particular. “well it could be purple jasper? or charoite?” he really had no idea what he was supposed to be looking for. “hmm... let me see the stone again. i’m sure it’s in here. or probably. there’s a ton of rocks, i’m finding.”

flynn.

the amount of times flynn rider had gotten into something … a little over his head … had taken an astronomical turn in recent years. so much so that he hadn’t blinked twice when varian started rambling to him, just a little too quickly for him to follow, about this potion that they were now supposedly brewing together. really, varian was doing all the leg work as flynn adjusted his goggles and peered over the younger boy’s shoulder. he jumped back theatrically as the potion exploded, but settled into a nervous chuckle when he realized it was just bubbles. not the goal, he thought - but not harmful. “ hey. uh - buddy ? ” he asked, straightening his shoulders. “ could you remind me what it is we’re trying to do ? ”

varian kept getting himself into these situations. ever since he was little and picked up an interest in alchemy and science. of course he had way more failures than he did successes and that was a problem for him. however, one day he was going to figure this all out and actually understand it. maybe he should go to school. nah. he could figure this out on his own. “wait i thought you knew what we’re doing.” varian blinked and looked at the bubbles coming from the bottle. he’d just been mixing stuff to see if he could get a reaction strong enough to dissolve the rocks back home. this was more difficult without a sample of them. “uh. i’m looking for an acidic substance that can dissolve magic items.” he added something to the potion and it stopped bubbling. “i don’t know what i’m doing.”

She widened her eyes out of shock. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the outline of a person not far from her. Kairi hadn’t expected anyone to find her out here. She certainly hadn’t seen this coming. Turning her head to the person, she awkwardly smiled at them.

“Help me?” Kairi lowered her keyblade, fully facing them. The person looked to be a boy who could possibly be in his late teens. She raised her brows and pursed her lips. “What would I need help with?”

he tilted his head to the side and looked at her. wondering if he’d been wrong in his assumption that she needed help. varian had heard stories about the forest. people just didn’t come out here that often. he had no idea what kind of person just came out here on their own. then again he was out here on his own. was that the same thing? varian didn’t know. he frowned and looked at her with a bit of a blank expression.

“i thought maybe...” the dark haired young man said. maybe he wasn’t very good at reading people. “i don’t know. people just don’t usually come out here?” he asked, tilting his head to the side. “did i miss judge?” he questioned. “i’m sorry.”

“hey you look like you know stuff about stones.” penelope called out to the other person. they weren’t too far off but penelope had a rare talent for yelling at strangers. she had gotten a certain stone from howl and they had given a whole spell on what exactly it was for and this and that. but penelope got lost in her own thoughts and may or may not have drowned out most of the older blond’s ramblings of magic. and rather go inside and admit her flaw she would ask a stranger on the street.

he was one of those people that read while he walked. he knew it wasn’t always a good idea, especially in busier areas, but it didn’t help when he had lots of different things to read and research. today’s book he’d gotten from the library on rocks. varian didn’t know if it would be helpful, he thought all knowledge was important to know and so he’d grabbed a ton of different books on types of rocks. the young man thought he probably should stop by the apothecary to see if he could pick up some of the ingredients that he was low on. he was used to the town by now to a degree. someone called out at him as he walked up to the door of the apothecary. “oh, um. i don’t know that much about stones,” he said and held up the book, “but i’m learning.”

“according to my notes, it’s supposed to be fizzing right now.” varian looked at the potion that he was working on with flynn. except it wasn’t fizzing. it wasn’t doing anything. at least for a second. then he stirred it once more (one more time than the actual recipe called for) and the liquid in the glass vial turned a vivid pink and started bubbling over. “okay well, i don’t think it’s suppos— ” he started as the thing exploded in bubbles, like when he’d put dish soap in the dishwasher that one time. varian removed the potion from the heat source. “so back to the drawing board, i guess. i swear i got that one right.”

milo.

He was definitely struggling. He felt exposed in this town where he had nowhere really to go hide in some books. The library seemed popular here and while he had no trouble meeting people, he really just needed a moment to think. He’d gone from dedicating his life to what was basically a legend to finding out it was all true and now he had to help protect the one hope Atlantis had to surviving an evil fairy who wanted to destroy it. It was a lot, okay? He’d decided that his best move would be to get some food. Mama Odie’s seemed like just the place so he dropped his books on a table outside and let his heavy bag fall only for all of his other books to spill out. He scrambled to collect them. He’d taken these books from his grandfather’s library.

“I’m so sorry, give me a moment, I’ll have these up and out of the way.” Milo apologized to the passerby as he handled the priceless books.

he was one of those people that never gave up. when it came to the things that he wanted to research and look up to figure out these black rocks. varian knew that he wanted to solve the mystery, but more than that make sure that his father was proud of him for his inventions. which meant that these days, varian was a frequent at the local library. he always had a big stack checked out on various topics these days about rocks, famous inventors, and acid. maybe they weren’t entirely useful subjects when the black rocks were a mystery, but it was a place to start and he needed that at least. with a stack of books in his hand, he’d decided after checking out the books to grab something to eat and found himself at his favorite spot: mama odie’s. a stack of books beside him, he looked at the stack of books that fell from the stranger’s bag and reached out to grab some.

“oh, no, you’re okay,” he handed over one of the books. “what are you researching?” varian asked, suddenly curious.

to put it mildly, the previous several weeks have been difficult to say the least. jack’s baby was a delightful surprise for the pair. despite the sleepless nights and constant struggle, those small hands had some how pulled at her heart strings. the idea of motherhood painted briefly across her face. sophie had left the babe with the dear wizard, desiring some fresh air and some berries from the woodland edge. she was on her way back home when it began to rain. “not right now” the witch said, as she sought shelter from the rain under a tree with her basket tucked close to her hip.

“this won’t do"

"the babe would surely be hungry by now,” she mumbled, adjusting her hat in an effort to calm her nerves.

sometimes, on the days that the homesickness seemed to be harder to deal with, varian would slip away from the bustle of elias and stand by the woods. maybe to some people who had come from larger cities, elias wasn’t that big, but to him who had only ever lived in a small town, this place could get overwhelming at times. there weren’t even that many people in town, he thought. but today was one of those days where he needed to think. the forest was... well, people said a lot about the woods here. they had a reputation and varian was a curious person. yes, he believed in magic. he sat at the edge of the woods for a bit, relaxing and working on some inventions in his notebook when he heard another person and looked up from his work. “hello, are you okay?” he asked.

adam.

Adam stared in disbelief, eyes were wide open as he contemplated the absurdity of the situation. He had no idea he was a part of a circus. At the very least that’s what it felt like. Adam had never encountered so many helpless, drifting individuals in one morning before. With clenched fists and a deep exhale, the prince let out an irritated puff. Words uttered with a strained smile,

“Just keep an eye on where you’re going. it’s best to admire the fascinating work of engineering from the side of the sidewalk, away from inquisitive bystanders. Don’t you agree?”

varian knew that he was, well, eccentric. a little too enthusiastic, a little bit chaotic at times, but that was all part of his charm. often he didn’t notice his behavior was strange until someone pointed it out to him. in a new place, varian still felt very strange about the amount of people there were here. yes, he made some friends and met some nice people, but he also knew he wouldn’t get along with everyone. there was bound to be conflict at some point in time. “well, i don’t know about all that. i think that sometimes you can just get entranced by something or someone,” varian shrugged as he spoke. “i’m sure that’s happened to everyone at one time or another.”

Asking for help wasn’t too foreign of a concept to Kairi. Though, she wasn’t too fond of doing so these days.

“Please work,” She whispered under her breath as she slashed her keyblade in the air, a flash of light sparking out from her weapon. But the light came and went the second it was summoned.

Kairi sighed at the failed attempt, however, she did not give up hope. She knew she could do this. She was familiar with the basics but still nowhere close to catching up with Riku and Sora. She just needed to keep practicing.

“Let’s try this again,” She closed her eyes and tightened her grip.

the forest was one of those places that varian had so far avoided. he didn’t know why he’d avoided it for so long. he knew that it was enchanted and magical, but he didn’t know how to figure out what was magical about it. to be honest, this whole magic thing still confused him. it wasn’t science, it wasn’t predictable. and sure that was funny coming from him when he was the definition of chaos sometimes, but he needed that predictability to figure out how to solve the mystery that he had on his hands. “need help?” he asked, walking up towards the forest and seeing someone practicing sword fighting? or was that what she was doing? he had no idea. “i, uh, have no idea what i can do to help.”

Howl nodded as he snapped his fingers and made the teapot warm up. He admitted that he did small displays of magic just because he could and it made his life a little easier. He was also a show-off, he could admit that.

“I am more than happy to help with questions. My knowledge is always available to anyone who needs it.” He had the tea set arrange itself. “Would you like some tea?”

varian was one of those people that could talk to most people about his interest even if he didn’t notice that the other people he spoke to were not interested in what he was talking about. but there were people that understood and people that had the same interests that he did. varian was trying to pay attention to the people around him, but it was difficult sometimes. “right. okay, yes. well i have a lot of them.” he nodded at the idea of tea. “yes, some tea sounds good right now.”

jack.

jack had no idea how he ended up in this scenario. he had taken something back from the norths shop. ever since the unmentionable fight, he had stayed away. one by one, the guardians had turned their backs on the youngster. he knew it was mainly his fault. still… north had kept something of his. maybe that will help answer some questions. so he had sneaked in and sneaked out of the shop. and now he was wandering the streets. walking through those who didn’t believe, and getting stare by those who did. the nesting dolls in his hands. lost in thought, he didn’t even notice that someone had called out to him.

“huh?” turning abruptly around. dropping the nesting doll, which resembled the winter spirit.

most of the time varian spent his days working on experiments. right now he was doing research on different types of rocks. all he had about the rocks at home were his observations. so far he had not found anything that were similar to them. magical or mundane. he wasn’t sure what else he could do to learn about them other than bother those from home. right now he was stuck. right now all he could do was research, learn all he could, and have some fun. what he didn’t expect was to see jack, one of the friends he had made. “what are you up to?” he asked, looking at his friend.

jim.

open starter

He’d been doing a lot of thinking lately. The reason why he’d come to this planet had begun to really weigh on him. He wasn’t supposed to blend in so well and form a family here but he had and now he didn’t really know what to do. He was playing with the sphere. He knew he shouldn’t have it out but people here had no idea what it was and it was safe. So, of course, he dropped it. He immediately ran after the thing until it was stopped by bumping into someone’s foot.

“Oh, uh, sorry there.” He bent over quickly to pick it up and shoved it into his pocket.

he was planning on staying here as long as he could, but varian missed his dad. he really wanted to be able to communicate with his father more easily. varian missed home, he just knew that if he spoke to his dad he’d want to go home. walking around trying to find a good thing to start experimenting with that was mundane and needed an invention, varian wasn’t exactly paying attention to where he was going. he stopped suddenly, seeing a plant that he wanted to pick without paying attention to if anyone was behind him. “oh, wait no. sorry. that was my fault. are you okay?” he asked, eyeing the plant once more before turning his attention to the person who had bumped him.

open starter location: pendragon apothecary

Howl often thought he was a genius but he was starting to be sure that it was true. He had yet to solve the town barrier problem but he had figured out how to fix the door in his home. He was also relieved to have help at the Apothecary which seems to be attracting more and more of the town’s people for help.

He’d always been determined to help as much as he could so he was glad to have the time and place to do that here. It also gave him something a little more mundane to focus on. He’d given Riku the day and decided to take over the shop himself. He used his magic to put the more dangerous potions on the higher shelf when someone walked in.

“Welcome!” He called, “Please let me know if you need help.”

varian liked pendragon apothecary and was still amazed that elias even had an apothecary. his village didn’t have an apothecary, so he usually got stuck asking his dad to pick up something when he went to the capital or searching for rare supplies near where he lived. having an apothecary near where he lived was dangerous, but useful. varian was excited about getting help from someone who had probably more training than he did with experiments. still, he was doing his best to try and avoid going or he’d really be broke. today was different though.

“oh, hello.” varian said with a smile on his face. “i’m good for now, but i might have questions if i can’t figure out what i need.” he carefully watched the magic, wondering what it was like to do magic.

namine.

She’d gotten used to carrying the big bag with her. She always felt empty without something to draw with so she always had her pencils and sketchbook on her. They were grounding and reminded her that this hobby was hers. Today was different and she’d decided to get some new paints from the store and try her hand at watercolor at the park. She was struggling to get her easel unfolded as that was new too. “This looked so much easier on the instructions.” Namine muttered to herself as the thing fell apart in her hands.

yes, he could have found flowers at the store for the potion he was working on, but varian had always liked collecting the ingredients for his alchemical experiments. it’s what he had done back home, so he was more used to that than he was to buying items from a shop. today he was looking for a specific plant in the park. he couldn’t help noticing someone trying to set up an easel nearby where he was looking for the plant. “do you need help?” he wasn’t much of an artist, but he had set up easels in the past. “i’m sure i can figure it out.”

Jarrah was on their last hope on finding their ship. It had seemed that they had tried every trick in the book. Nothing was going their way. They decided to go to practice they didn’t fully understood. They didn’t have a way of contacting their old friend who was a sort of professional in the strange work of spells and alchemy. They had heard whispers of one that might have a set of skills and knowledge they needed. Jarrah approached younger man, “Varian I presume? I am in need some of assistance. Are you willing to help?”

varian still was not used to people here not knowing who he was. typically people at home knew who he was, but here? it seemed like people didn’t really know everyone here the way they knew everyone back home. so it was weird whenever someone knew him. or someone had overheard what kind of work he did. alchemy didn’t seem to be a popular profession around here. magic was common. so it was a bit strange, though varian was a fan of the strange, when someone walked up to him and seemed to know who he was. “ yes, that’s me. assistance? i’m willing to hear you out. ” he was on his own mission here, but he did need to make money.
