when i was a kid, my sister and i thought the version of lex luthor from superman the animated series was black. mostly due to his deep voice and facial features (we just thought he was light skinned lolll). this went on to the point where, when we watched the christopher reeve movie for the first time and saw gene hackman we were like “who the heck is that” lollll

i would later learn that he was never actually meant to be black. he’s voiced by clancy brown (a white guy) and his facial features were based on telly savalas (italian specifically).

that said, i’m rewatching it now and in one episode, lex makes first contact with brainiac, claims to essentially being earth’s spokesman, and gets on said space ship without a second thought. and i'm like “oh yeah, that’s totally a white guy” lollll

I also thought he was black and had the exact same reaction to Gene Hackman, lol.

That said, I think there does need to be a canonical black Lex Luthor at some point, because that would open up so many deeply interesting narrative and thematic avenues. Lex famously hates Superman, at least in part, because Metropolis loves him. He sees Superman as being beloved because of luck: he was born with powers, he didn’t have to work from the bottom like (some versions) of Lex did.

Now, just think about how that dynamic would deepen if Lex was black. Think about how the resentment he feels towards Superman would become kind of more justifiable; this godlike alien gets a free pass into everyone’s hearts just because he looks white.

Lex would still have to be a villain, obviously, so the racial dynamics would have to be handled with care. Maybe have Steel in the story as a working class guy who gets fired from Lexcorp (and has his designs stolen in the process)? You could make it about Luthor’s individualism, his rugged capitalist mindset as the thing that “saved” him vs Superman’s working class, multi-racial solidarity.

Internally, though, how distraught are they? Can they recognize the situation they’re in? Or do they just assume it’s normal to perpetually know absolutely nothing about themselves ?

I feel like Bryan Cranston, operating under “Hal from Malcom in the Middle” mode, could be really fun in a Knives Out movie. Maybe as that film’s assistant. Maybe as that film’s villain. Hell, maybe even as a rival detective. But I think he has it in him to be an interesting and hilarious foil to Benoit Blanc.

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.
