The gender treatment in Mass Effect frequently grates on me.
What the game says:
Humanity treats the genders equally
Turians treat the genders equally
Among salarians, women are normally the leaders
The asari are monogender and the dominant species in the galaxy
What the game shows:
The prominent human leaders are all men (Udina, Anderson, Hackett)
The turian leaders are all men (because there was no female turian model until the ME3 DLC)
The Salarian Councilor in ME1 is a male
The asari are treated as women. The Codex emphasizes their competence and power, but it’s rarely shown in-game
Isn’t it interesting how in ME1 the turians only had male models and the quarians only had female models, then in ME2 male models were created for the quarians but there wasn’t a female model for the turians until the ME3 DLC?
No one would question an all male military or leadership by the turians, so the female character models were optional.
But the Migrant Fleet being all female? The quarian admirals being all female? That would break the suspension of disbelief.
And isn’t it interesting that despite women normally being leaders among salarians, the first Salarian Councilor is male?
Presumably because Bioware wanted to show the salarian STG on Virmire, and since the STG obviously had to be male, that meant the Salarian Councilor had to be male since there was only room for one gender of character model. World building be damned.
Just… Mass Effect is better than many other media from its time. That it let you play as female Shepard alone is proof enough of that.
But hoo boy do the unconscious bias of the developers show through at times.
"Ryder...there is intelligence in its eyes..."
felt inspired by the boops
I love how in Mass Effect 2 after your death your close circle of friends deal with your death by either a) going home, b) becoming a major part of the criminal underworld, or c) becoming the president.
I know that Mass Effect 3 gets a lot of shit - and fuck knows it deserves it - but I swear it also has the ability to make me feel more emotions than any other piece of media ever has.
Forget the endings bullshit, and the ridiculousness of Kai Leng - it's about Javik's voice when he asks you "Why didn't you prepare for the reapers, human?" It's the old lady whose daughter is dead on earth, but she doesn't know, and doesn't remember she's talking to her asari daughter in law. It's the kid in the refugee camp, waiting for her parents. It's Mordin singing Amazing Grace, Thane's last prayer, Legion and Tali on Rannoch - does this unit have a soul? It's asking the elcor ambassador how many of his people you managed to save and hearing "Not. Enough." It's hearing the casualty reports over the radio in London - areas reporting 90, 95 percent casualties - and knowing there's nothing you can do. It's hearing Anderson whisper "You did good, child" as he dies. It's hearing Hackett's voice and standing up one last time, ready to fight, ready to die.
this is still the funniest way to start a romance in a video game possibly ever
Fan service.
Shepard (custom), Liara / Mass Effect (c) Bioware
I am still listening to the mass effect soundtracks and I just realized that at the end of 3 there’s a song called “I am alive and I am not alone” which plays if Shepard destroyed the relays and you checked all the boxes to get that cut of Shepard breathing in the wreckage
“I am alive and I am not alone” has the same motifs as “uncharted worlds” which is the music that plays in the background of the galaxy map in all three games

You’re in the squad because of your optimized combat build and heavy weapons. I’m in the squad because they’re trying to romance me and want to hear my dialogue options. We are not the same.
