Hi hi 👋 I'm curious, what is the difference between a witch and someone who works with magic beyond self identification? what defines a witch and witchcraft among other magic workers?

I think the simplest explanation is that basically, you are a witch if you call yourself a witch.

"Witch" is a self identified label.

So if someone doesn't identify as a witch, then it's not for anyone to insist that they are a witch. If someone from a tradition or culture says their people's magic or spiritual work is not called witchcraft, then it's not witchcraft.

"Witch" is also a reclaimed term.

It is only very recently and largely in the West (and even then, only in a handful of countries) that the word has gained positive connotations and a cultural space where people are proud to use it as a personal identifier. In MUCH of the rest of the world, it remains, at best, an insult and in some places, a potentially life-threatening accusation.

And it behooves us as modern witches to be aware of the historical use of the terms "witch" and "witchcraft," not just as it applies to witch trials in Europe and North America, but as a colonialist buzzword used to dismiss and demonize indigenous cultural beliefs and practices, and to justify subjugation or destruction of an Other. (See Also: "Heathen" as a derogatory.)

Even if we ONLY examine the aforementioned European and North American witch trials, the victims of those trials were not self-identified witches. That was a label put upon them by the courts and their accusers. Personally, I think the well-known personages from some of the more famous trials would be horrified to learn how inextricably their names are linked with a word that destroyed their lives.

And in a modern sense, even in countries where witchcraft is more accepted, there are plenty of practitioners who choose not to do so publicly for reasons of personal and professional safety.

So the takeaway here is that even if it walks like a witch and talks like a witch and stirs a big bubbling pot like a witch, it's still only witchcraft if the practitioner says so. 😊

One of the greatest witchcraft lessons I have learned in my twenty plus years of practice, is that the more 'intermediate' and 'advanced' witchcraft is indistinguishable from beginner witchcraft. Returning to and maintaining the basics, as with any craft (i.e. music, writing, art etc) is really the better part of it. The simple, seemingly benign acts within the practice, the routine and seeming monotony, they maintain the depth you reach as you grow in your practice.

On Saturday I said to my partner, as I have said for months, "A ten thousand dollar a year raise would solve so many of my problems."

As of this morning I was reluctantly looking for jobs because I love my job and don't want to leave it, but see: $10k raise problem solver.

As of noon today this was no longer an issue, because my boss called me with the news that I was getting a $10K merit raise.

I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. This is roughly $200 extra per paycheck. Enough to pay off debt faster, rebuild my savings, and spend a weekend a month in Milwaukee getting obscenely laid. The sex I'm going to have on $200 extra per paycheck. You can't even.

May all of you get the $10K raise your soul has yearned for. And whatever level of sex you can be satisfied with for $200.
