“I consider myself more of a lion, noble and what not. But thank you for the lovely compliment, me, a lamb, the picture of innocence. I could see that as well” he responded quickly. Kian had many discussions with everyone in the court. Literally everyone. He was gifted at befriending people and gaining their trust. Yet the only person he found remotely interesting was Veronique. Every other woman in court didn't speak of much but fine fabrics and jewels, their husbands new younger mistresses and other incredibly boring things. Even the princess managed to bore him at times. He didn't have any use for idle chat unless it was getting to information he could use.

With the stubborn lady, it was different. She was just as quick-witted and sharp-tongued as he was. It kept him on his toes. Something he would need if he planned to bring down an empire from the inside.

“Well, I myself would like a drink. There are whispers that blood is the source of your youth, and while I don’t believe I can get that for you if you’d like madame I could fetch you some wine” he gave the lady in blue a prim and proper bow but had that signature smirk of his across his lips.

Henriette’s cheeks flushed with color. SHe adored how warm Oliver was, his hands and his smile. It was like each time they touched her mood was a little bit brightened by his warmth. Once he let go of her hand she clasped her left hand in her right properly in front of her.

“I did but just briefly” the princess nodded softly. “Since my father is- is um- in Paris-” anyone who knew of the king’s failing health was sworn to secrecy, not that it had worked, but she had to pretend to lie none the less. If the information that the monarchy was weak got into the wrong hands France might have to prepare for war, that was not something she could do. “my mother and the Swedish Ambassador are figuring out anything new. He doesn’t have much interest in the Dauphine.” she laughed lightly, like sweet bells.

“I’m sure our paths will cross tonight of course. One can hope that it will be before the fireworks are ignited. ” she finished. Henriette looked around the grand ballroom and if she hadn't grown up within these walls she’d almost say people were having fun. The smiles on their faces were just a mask to conceal their true intentions, whatever they may be.

Him? A picture of innocence? Veronique couldn’t help but laugh at the thought.  Kian always had a sly smirk on his lips, and she suspected she wasn’t the only one who was on edge any time the Welshman walked into the room.  It didn’t help that he seemed to delight in prodding at people’s sore spots.  It didn’t bother her - she’d long since learned to armour herself against silly things like insults and jibes - but she was fiercely protective of the princess.  Someday he would jab the princess too hard in the wrong place, and on that day Veronique would happily show him the sharp side of her tongue.  

“Oh, I could make do with yours in a pinch," Veronique flashed a toothy grin at the dark-haired man as he bowed.  "But for now wine will do, thank you."  Even if she distrusted and usually disliked the man, she refused to be anything but polite to him.  Being rude burned bridges, and in a court like this one, you needed all your avenues open.  

"Lord Kian is bringing me wine.  Will wonders never cease?" She drawled, nudging the princess to get her attention.  "Next thing I know he'll be asking me to dance."

Olivier nodded serenely as the princess repeated the standard line put out by the palace.  The king was merely busy in Paris, rather than bed-bound by an illness.  It was entirely understandable given the nature of their current surroundings, but the constant stonewalling from any palace officials and residents was frustrating.  He needed real information, not the lies they fed everyone else.  Perhaps he needed to pick up the pace on his wooing of the princess to get some proper intelligence.  

"I should hope so," he said warmly, letting his smile crinkle the corners of his eyes as he gazed at her.  "I should like to dance with you at least once before the night is through." 

It was forward, and risky.  Ther princess might not want to, given that it might set a precedent for other suitors to ask her the same question, but he thought she might appreciate knowing his intention, regardless of whether or not she accepted.  He hoped she would agree nonetheless because he was quite proud of his skill as a dance partner and he suspected she'd enjoy herself immensely to his benefit.

Henriette was far from fit to be a queen. Once she became comfortable she rarely kept her opinions to herself. But more so then that she thought with her heart rather than her head. Due to this her father, King Louis tended to keep her sort of locked away. Rarely did she leave Versailles or hear about the poverty in the streets. If she did know there was a high chance she would do more and that isn’t exactly somthing a proper queen to be should be seen supporting. Especially with so many whisperes of rebellion outside the castle walls.

She laughed softly as Veronique and Kian exchanged jabs. They always did. When Henreitte would ask why her lady would just say she didn’t trust him. That didn’t matter though, if Oliver trusted him clearly he could be trusted in the princess’ eyes.

“Relax my dear Veronique!” She smiled and nudged the girls side. “You look stiff as timber. We’re here to have fun remember?” When they were kids Veronique got in trouble for getting all of her dresses muddy or torn, she was never your traditional noble. That’s one of the things Hentreitte loved about her so much.

Once she layed eyes on her lover she practically lit up. A wide smile crossed her lips and her cheeks a rosy shade of pink. “Its been too long Oliver,” she cooed, of course they had seen eachother early the same morning before most of the castle was awake but still she would give anything to leave the party and spend hours with him. She bowed her head to him and averted her eyes slightly. If anyone but their closest friends knee about them it would be the biggest palace the scandal had seen since her fathers second mistress. That was the last thing she needed.

Kian rolled his eyes and chuckled at Oliver’s comment. Shaking his head he spoke “oh no, Oliver you have it wrong. See any one in the princess presence looks like an eyesore. Its France’s favorite medusa that makes me look dashing” He gave Veronique yet another ill-intentioned sugar sweet smile.

Kian was the bastard son of a Welsh nobleman. He was ostrisized from his family at a young age and quickly learned to care for himself. He was arrested at age fifteen and then forced to serve in the army for France. That’s how he met Oliver and got involved with the revolutionary Buisness.

He forged their nobility papers and the pair climbed the social later until they landed themselves a place in Versailles. Or the hell pit of the modern world as he liked to call it. He was constantly disgusted by the disregard the court members had for precious things like money or even food.

His time at court was typically spent listening, gathering information he could then relay. Pretending to genuinely care about the social politics that only mattered inside the towering walls.

Usually, Veronique would have indulged her friend.  She often overthought and had trouble letting her guard down without coaxing.  It was a helpful trait in the royal court, where trusting anyone could result in a knife in your back, or literally between your ribs.  In social situations such as this, however, she came off as cold and bull-headed.  Hardly attractive qualities in a dance partner.  

Still, she felt it was her duty to protect the princess from any outside threats, and her gut was telling her that the only gift Kian bore was plenty of trouble.  Something about him put her back up, and she was quite sure she'd find out what it was sooner than later.   In the meantime, she'd just have to do her best not to strangle him in full view of all the guests. 

"Oh Kian,” she sighed, righting herself after her friends’ playful nudge and pretending to pout.  “I sincerely doubt that.  Making you look good is an impossible task, even for me.”  

He was equally good at getting under her skin.  Somehow he knew exactly which buttons to push to spark her ire, and she could only hope that she could find a similar gap in his armour someday.  For now, she’d settle for having a laugh at his expense. 

“Poor lamb,” she crooned, the effect somewhat spoiled by the wicked grin that was spreading across her lips.

“It truly has, your Highness,” Olivier agreed, taking her hand and lifting it so that he could brush a kiss across her knuckles.  The skin of her wrist was satin smooth against his fingertips when he touched, oh-so-lightly when he released her hand.  They’d seen each other a mere few hours ago, but no one but Kian and Veronique could know.  To have that news making the rounds in court would be nothing short of disastrous for both he and the princess. 

He laughed gently at Veronique and Kian’s antics. The two were always trying to outdo one another’s witticisms, much to the delight of onlookers.  He’d ever wondered what made Kian needle the princess’ lady so, but he was hardly going to pry.  Kian’s reasons were his own. 

"Have you had a chance to meet the Swedish ambassador, your Highness?" He queried, folding his hands behind his back and straightening his posture.   He despised small talk, much preferring the conversations they could have behind closed doors, but it was a necessary evil. It was an unspoken rule of society that anything of import was not to be discussed.  No, any and all conversation was limited to pleasantries, the weather, and other trivialities.  

"I've heard he's quite engaging." He smiled, burying his distaste with practiced ease.  Besides, he consoled himself, there would be plenty of time for more in-depth topics later.

Princess Henriette of France was finally ready to make her grande entrance to the ball. With her hair elegantly braided back and an ornate soft lavender and gold ball gown adorned her body she took a deep breath and smiled over to her best friend and Lady-in-waiting Veronique. She was announced and the massive and decorative doors to the ball room opened. Of course it was already filled with laughter and music. She curtsied as people greeted her and the pair made their way further into the party. The ball was being thrown for the prince of Sweden to came to talk trade with her ailing father. Her eyes calmly serched the crowd for the one and only person she really wanted to see, *insert lovers name here*

Lord Kian Pembrook of Wales had been at the party for a short period of time before the princess and her lady arrived. As soon as he heard her name called he swiftly turned on his heels to make sure his best friend didnt wonder off. But of course, he was gone. Kian was dressed in a simple yet elengant dark red velvet jacket with simple detailing. He wasn’t very flashy as a whole. His hair nicely tame. His goal for this party was to of course get some information on the trade between Sweden and France but that would have to wait. He found the princess and her lady before he found his best friend. “Your highness” he politely bowed to Henriette. “And Veronique, how nice it is to see you. Interesting story, see I was riding on my horse back to the palace from the town when out of the corner of my eye I saw somthing strange. Naturally I stopped to see what it was” he pulled a little green stone from his pocket “would you happen to know what this stone is called? Serpentine. How fitting since I thought it must’ve been one of your snake like scales that had been shed” he smirked and then gave her a sarcastic little bow.

Lady Veronique Aguillon was not one to shy from a challenge.  In fact, she quite enjoyed testing herself against anything and everything that set itself in her path.    Yet here she was, trying hard not to wring her hands as she and the Princess were announced and entered the ballroom.  She could practically feel every eye in the room on them - more Henriette than herself, naturally - and it made her want to squirm.  Or at least go back to her chambers to change into something less...Revealing.  In contrast to the Princess’ frothy lavender and gold confection, her own marine blue gown seemed sedate.  Unfortunately, this still meant that her neckline dipped well below her collarbones and made her want to cross her arms at every available moment. Especially when a sadly familiar dark-haired figure arrested their momentum through the crowd. 

“Lord Kian. How nice to see that you are still using and re-using the same lines on every lady in the court.” She sketched a curtsey, a honeyed smile on her lips.  The best friend of the Princess’ sweetheart, Kian inevitably joined his compatriot whenever he came to visit.  When the princess and her lover sought privacy in her quarters, Veronique was left to entertain Kian.  She thought he was a boor, he thought she was a shrew, and both loathed every moment of their time together. 

“Sadly, that is not one of mine. Perhaps if I were a dragon and had such scales, you might be dissuaded from pestering me so.” Still smiling, she offered her arm to the Princess.  “Have you seen Lord Cassot? Her Highness wishes to see him.” - Olivier hated these parties. They were wasteful, gluttonous excuses for the clergy, knights, aristocracy, and royalty to rub shoulders, size one another up, and sleep with one another’s wives.  He’d been to far too many in his life thanks to his father’s bravery in the Seven Years’ War. Meanwhile the poor starved in the streets.  That’s why he was doing this - to end their suffering.  He had the power to do so, especially now that the princess had accepted his advances.

The King’s ill health was the worst-kept secret in France.  Anyone who cared to pay the slightest bit of attention could see that he was not long for the mortal realm, and his only daughter would be his heir.  Princess Henriette was beautiful and kind, but she was naive in the extreme.  He’d offered her a fairy-story of a romance, and she’d accepted without too much hesitation.  Her lady-in-waiting, Veronique, was more pragmatic, but he wasn’t romancing her.  So long as the Princess would see him, he could set about bringing down the ridiculous farce of a government from the inside.  

Cutting through the crowd, he spied Kian conversing with two women.  Veronique was identifiable by her stiff posture and the princess by her stunning beauty.  She wore a beautiful gown of lilac and gold that set off her soft brown hair to perfection, and he couldn't help but smile.  His intentions weren't entirely pure, but nobody had ever said he couldn't appreciate her beauty while he did his work.  

"Good evening Lady Veronique, your Highness." He smiled and bowed as he arrived beside the princess.  "What visions you both are. You almost make my friend look handsome by being near him."  His tone became teasing as he grinned and inclined his head to greet Kian.

This would be the first and last time she picked up a shift on a Wednesday night Anais decided, swiping a damp cloth over the varnished wood top of one of the bar’s much-abused tables.  Admittedly it wasn’t the most popular venue, so it usually turned into a ghost town around mid-week.  Nobody could quite figure out what kept even the few devoted regulars away, but what good would it do?  It was just the way things were.

She’d learned quickly that asking questions was very much discouraged by management.  At first, it had pissed her off - How the hell was she supposed to do anything if she couldn’t ask about it?  Then she’d just resigned herself to it.  The only reason she kept taking shifts here was to pad out her wages from her other job, so what did it matter? It just wasn’t worth the energy to push back. 

A roll of thunder rumbled outside as delicate raindrops began to tap against the windows.  The sound lent an oddly soothing air to the empty room as she wiped down the tables and bar.  The yellow light from the lamps overhead made her think wistfully of the St. Marie, even if it was noticeably lacking the fug of cigar smoke and the jazz band.  Someday she hoped to revive it - provided that her dead-end jobs didn’t kill her first.  

She turned when the door handle rattled, arching one ashy blonde eyebrow.  “Evening,” she greeted the figure in the doorway, tucking the rag into the back of her belt.  “What can I get you?”

POLYVORE USER FORUM

As many of you know, Polyvore is now just another garbage shopping site. There is now no longer any space for creativity and there was no warning that allowed us to make contacts with many of the friends we have made through the years. I quickly pieced together this website on wix which I will update with usernames and links to accounts on Tumblr or Twitter (whichever you prefer), so people can stay in contact.
