"He gave up the avatar state for her!!!" And i unironically cannot name a better way to piss katara off. Imagine your buddy gives up his ability to end a war thats lasted 100 years and ravaged your homeland, all because he wants to kiss you, and you aren't even sure if you return the sentiment. All of your and the whole world's hopes are riding on him and he just doesnt give a shit. Id kick his ass so hard
'katara and aang are about two genocide survivors finding commonality in that and making a family together!' wow great! i love reading that letter where katara got to pass down some SWT heritage to tenzin -
okay...maybe not. maybe the grandkids have some SWT culture incorporated into their designs -
and no, the blue-grey eyes don't count because if i have to use a color picker to see what color their eyes are to determine who their grandmother is, you may have fucked up
or how about when aang really understands katara -
*cue the last half of season 3 where aang either talks down to katara or the writers didn't think to put anything in to help the relationship*
*cue the movie having a scene where aang yells at katara that she doesn't understand why he's so desparate to get the staff*
yikes
guys. i don't know how to tell you this, but i don't think two white men still licking their wounds from when their first crush didn't work out a decade before they made their show was putting katara and aang together for progressive reasons. i'm glad you found a way to weave in a progressive reason, but stop giving bryke the credit where there isn't any
I'm back in the fucking building again😀
Anyway, I passed an Instagram reel that was talking about how people annoyed with Katara's fate aren't "normal" about female characters and aren't treating mothers like people.
I'm gonna hold everyone's hand when I tell you this. The problem is not making Katara a mother. Katara is absolutely the kind of woman I can see always wanting a family and no one I've seen who criticizes how she's been handled has ever said differently.
The problem is that she wasn't allowed to be anything else. She didn't get a statute like the rest of the Gaang. She wasn't (from what LOK showed us) active in Republic City like Aang, Toph, and Sokka. She didn't get to fight in LOK like Zuko and Toph. Hell, we don't even get good insight into her relationship with her kids; we get more with Aang's relationship with them and he's dead. The only thing she got was being labeled the best healer in the world, which is also something they did nothing with.
The bare minimum would have been to have Katara open and run a hospital in LOK and give her a statue for it if they absolutely had to make her just a healer. They couldn't even do that.
Katara was deliberately sidelined. It's not about her being a mother, it's not even about her being with Aang. It's about how she was cast aside once she was locked into being Aang's wife and the mother of his children
Kataangers throw around the word misogynistic a lot when talking about zutara which i have always found ironic when You consider kataang as it exists in the text is built on a male centered maturation fantasy. The creators stated they wanted the set up of a younger boy with a crush on an older babysitter type girl who eventually likes him back. The reward for the male subjects maturation is access to the female subject romantically. Boy has crush on girl. Girl sees him as a little brother. Boy proves himself. Girl sees him as romantically eligible. The girl as subject is relegated to reactive role in the boys development. This extends to the romantic relationship as well.
While I don't think authorial intent is the end all be all of interpretation it would be intellectually lazy to pretend that intent doesn't impact the framing and development of kataang as a romantic pairing in canon. If you're going to claim zutara as a ship is misogynistic then you also have to concede that kataang is at minimum built on a premise that relegates katara to a reactive role in their relationship. Whether the ship ever actually outgrows that premise is a matter of debate in it of itself.

the catch-22 of black characters in fandom: if a black character is morally upstanding, heroic and kind, if they embody good and noble traits with minimal or understandable flaws, the majority of fandom will decide they're too boring and vanilla to stan and ignore or bash them in favor of nonblack characters, claiming there's something untrustworthy or unbelievable about how good this character seems to be. but if a black character is messy, morally complex or fucked up on par with nonblack characters in the same story or straight-up evil like a lot of popular nonblack villains in fandom are, the majority of fandom will hyperfocus on the black character's negative traits and use them as the reason why they "can't" be interested in the black character or as a flimsy excuse for repeating antiblack stereotypes. like when it comes to black villains or even just like. 3-dimensionally flawed black characters, most folks in fandom often frame them as beyond empathy bc they're exceptionally aggressive/dishonest/unemotional etc and that makes them fundamentally unsympathetic and repulsive, even if they have favorite nonblack characters with the exact same traits. the common denominator of these arguments is blackness, and how way too many people see blackness itself as inherently beyond sympathy and inherently lacking interiority- but a lot of folks in liberal fandom spaces are unable to face that bias about themselves, so they grasp onto arbitrary character traits as the "reason" for why they think so many black characters are just unsympathetic and unlikable and uninteresting regardless of how they're depicted. it's completely valid to have archetype preferences- some folks just prefer straightforward heroic types, some folks just prefer villains or monsters, etc- but if someone who loves a whole roster of bland morally righteous nb heroes is turning up their nose at black heroes for being too boring or too perfect, or if someone who makes a whole meal outta being a monsterfucker villain stan somehow draws the line at black characters doing all the fucked up things their nb faves have done, we know the basis of that double standard is antiblackness.
black hero?? ugh they're a mary sue/they're too perfect/they're too boring/the story's tryna fool and manipulate us into thinking this character's a good person but i know they aren't!! black villain?? ugh they're so evil/irredeemable/disgusting how can anyone stan them?? they've literally killed and exploited so many people. anyway back to posting about my nonblack fave who just deserves a big hug, hatecrime mcgenocideman-

I thought I was free from hoo's and fanon's interpretation of Annabeth Chase where she's always stoic, never showing her emotions, and/or needing others to show her that feeling is okay and that "silly Annabeth, sometimes you have to use your heart!" I THOUGHT I WAS FREE! But then the show pulls me back in, just like I knew it would. Don't worry Annabeth, Percy will show you the way.

The fact that ANOTHER “bisexual chaos” scene happened where Will just outright ignores his partner’s boundaries on him outwardly expressing attraction towards someone is just… ugh.
What have they done to this ship? What have they done to both of them? I love Solangelo as a concept, but in practice this is just sad. He’s literally flirting with a woman in front of his boyfriend.
