When one has lived as long as Conquest had, fought as many foes to the bitter end as him, one will likely end up gaining the ability to pick out certain traits in someone's character at a glance. The dragon knew that look in the woman's eye well, that burning desire -- that need -- to take on seemingly insurmountable foes and tear them down, to feel their blood on one's skin and the taste on one's tongue, to see the life fleeting from their sorry carcasses.
Indeed, he knew it well.
And he did not like it.
The stranger approached him and spoke to him, and his once passive gaze was pulled into a squint of undisguised suspicion. A low growl slipped past his many fangs, eternally pulled into a chilling snarl, as he regarded her. Had she the ability to understand him like his Rider could, she likely would have taken offence to his reply.
[What's it to you, MEAT?]
"That would be me!" a friendly woman's voice called out, paired with rapidly approaching footsteps in a light jog.
Safine entered the scene with a large leather bag slung over her shoulder, filled to the brim with fresh fruit and sweet baked goods. She gave the other woman a polite wave and a beaming smile as she approached, closing the distance quickly and stopping to stand by Conquest's side. She gently cooed to him, "Aww, I'm sorry for making you wait," leading to him lowering his head for her to scratch and earning herself an appreciative grunt.
"His name's Conquest, by the way," she continued, now speaking to the redhead again. As she did she fished out a doughnut and offered it to Conquest, which he greedily devoured. "A big and beautiful guy, isn't he?"
[Wouldn't call myself 'beautiful',] he interjected after swallowing the treat, though was brushed off by Safine with a pat to his lower jaw. Oh, well.
Safine's smile somehow brightened further as she extended an arm, expecting a handshake from the other woman. "Safine Drakos," she introduced herself as. "What should we call you, miss?"
As Safine conversed and Conquest regarded the stranger with a glare cold as steel, a small crowd began to form around the trio. Excited whispers of, "It's the Champion!" and "You think I'd get an autograph?" could be heard by those with keen hearing, giving away the fact that Safine was, indeed, no small deal.
"So...couldn't help but t'notice tha' ya been followin' me."
Tomoko doesn't exactly hide her features or the fact that she wound up bonded to a soulseer mizutsune. The two were a pissed off pair that got hurt and decided to team up. But she knows that it's a dangerous prospect, especially if she doesn't keep herself and her partner under control.
"We ain't stickin' around or anythin' so if yer gonna escort us outta town, that's fine."
"Oh, I'm sure you are," Safine admitted, then visibly flinched at how sarcastic her reply may have come off as. That was, quite obviously, not her intent. Still, such was the utterance that came out of her mouth, and thus she had to mentally prepare herself any sort of retaliation.
Although, she managed a quick, "Sorry, that sounded rude," just to be on the safe side.
She took a deep breath and forced her expression into a smile that looked genuine enough. Make no mistake, however, she was still wary of this stranger and her beastly partner. It was incredibly rare for one to tame a Soulseer Mizutsune -- most Mizutsune Riders acquire their own via proving their mettle by defeating a wild specimen, or through an unfortunate run-in with an especially brutal Zinogre -- but even rarer was finding a Rider(?) with such an unusual presence. It was not like the air shared by Safine and her siblings, awe-inspiring at best and dread-inducing at worst, but it was unnatural enough that it caught her attention.
Combined with the stranger's specific features, which looked a touch too similar to real, living Mizutsune fins over anything fake or crafted from the genuine article, Safine began to suspect that certain rumours she had been hearing as of late carried at least some validity.
Still smiling, she approached the other at a steady pace, not so fast as to be alarming but also not so slow as to come off as cautious. "Kamura Village is a friendly and welcoming place, so you don't have to leave if you don't want to... I should know, I was practically raised here." Safine stopped a few short paces away from the other woman, now close enough to be dead-certain that the other's scent was a unique cocktail of human and Pokémon (not human scents and Pokémon pheromones simply mingling together, a truly unorthodox smell that carried "features" of both).
"Besides, it's a rare treat to see Deviants. If you don't mind, I'd love to take a closer look at your gorgeous friend."
"Stop trying to shove that in my mouth." He's being a stubborn teenager, but to be fair, when your self-proclaimed surrogate parents are eagerly trying to feed you when you aren't hungry, you're gonna be a little annoyed. "I'm not hungry."
[Oh, please, we all saw you cosying up to our Riders and their friends for some table scraps,] Rosalind growled through a mouthful of charred flesh, affectionately and teasingly. She brought it closer to Ratha's jaws, eagerly bothering him to take it and eat it. [How about something new for a change? This is meat from a... Oh, what does Ruby call them again? Those blue runners, with the funny head pieces.]
[Velocidrome,] Rex absent-mindedly called from a short distance away, busying himself with housekeeping (nest-keeping, if you will) by clearing their shared nest of debris: rotting branches, mouldy hay, old bones, and all manner of other unpleasant substances.
Rosalind seemingly ignored her old mate's comment, once again trying to stuff Ratha's mouth. [It's tasty and lean, and it won't have you feeling too heavy to fly afterwards.]
Watching this rather humorous scene unfold while packing away her grilling equipment, Rubina give a hearty exhale through her nose. She regarded Mari with a knowing grin, correctly theorising as to what the younger Rider's Rathalos was saying to her own pair of fire wyverns.
"Y'know, maybe he wouldn't turn 'em down if you'd stop sneakin' some bites for him," she joked. "He ain't no Canyne, after all."
Well, I guess I don't have anything special to say. Other than, of course, the usual groveling for forgiveness due to my semi-frequent moments of utter silence.
"Yeeeeah... very sweet...." Church muttered, making a face and trying to waft away what could only be described as monster halitosis. Someone needed to brush his teeth, apparently.
He watched as Ada re-emerged and talked to her monstie for a moment. Semi-wild? He supposed it wouldn't be the first time someone bonded with a monster in an unusual way, if what Mari had told him about Streak was any indication. Still, there was quite a bit of difference between a Tobi-Kadachi and an Arkveld.
"He seems like the strong, silent type, honestly," he finally remarked, before whistling for Sparks. As the Gendrome trotted over so he could climb into the saddle, Alma got up, put all her stuff in her bag, and climbed into the saddle of her own Seikret, Jade. Now that everyone was mounted up, they could make their trek deeper into the Oilwell Basin.
"Nu Udra is the region's apex predator," Alma stated as she gently urged her Seikret forward. "So, perhaps fortunately, that leaves us with a very short life of what could upset one. A wild Arkveld would be most likely... or a Jin Dahaad that got very, very lost, I suppose. Of course, it could be also be something new--with everything that's happened recently, I would not be too surprised if that was the case."
"Strong and silent, huh?" Adamantia muttered, mostly to herself. "Strong, sure... but silent?"
She cast a glance towards Lazarus as she mounted Vorombe, right as the Arkveld gave another yawn; one so mighty, it made him shudder from head to shoulders. At the very least she would not need to worry about him wreaking havoc in her absence.
Adamantia sighed through her nose, tearing her eyes away from Lazarus. "Watch him fight even once and you'd never call him 'silent' ever again." She still spoke at a low volume, though, so her companions would probably not have heard what she had to say.
She made herself comfortable upon her Seikret's saddle right as Azules hopped on to sit behind her, and with a flick of his reins she sent Vorombe ambling forward at a mostly leisurely pace. Seeing how they were already located in the Oilwell Basin's base camp, conveniently, the trip down to the deepest volcanic levels would hopefully not take too long. With the basin currently being in its Plenty, they also would have little to worry about when it came to being cooked alive on the way there.
That is, if they did not encounter any bed-tempered locals, so to speak...
After Alma had listed her theories as to what could disturb a Nu Udra, Adamantia replied, "I wouldn't be surprised if it's another Arkveld. One attacked me and Nata a while ago, but Quetzal and Lazarus managed to drive it away. Maybe it's back for Round Two..."
Another nasal sigh.
"But I'm still worried about it being another Gogmazios. The first one kept appearing without warning, after all."
"They sure are stealthy for being so massive," Azules hissed.
Holy monologuing Swoobatman never fucking MIND. As soon as she starts talking and rambling Guzma immediately regretted allowing her to take one- two-- like, a million pics of his bug.
Yeah yeah he's cool as fuck and all, but come on, woman! That's a bit much!!
The Skull leader tried to share a quick look with Goli, the kind that quietly said something like 'get a load of this one', just to find the bug completely basking in the attention, even striking poses and chirping quite delighted at all the attention.
Tsk. You think you know someone...!
"Ayo, ya think I'm a Bulbapedia article, or somethin'?",
Come on, man. Keep up with the cool thug attitude.
We have no time to chitchat, even with how cool looking this lady might seem!
"Ya will find all ya need there, y'know--
Can ya quit making poses already?!"
A scold met with the bug equivalent of a raspberry, followed by an offended gasp.
Okay, all things considered, that was funny. Really funny. Funny enough that Safine could do little against the undignified snort and childish giggle that broke their way out. An expert in virtually all things Venalos, especially its endemic Pokémon, she was quite helpless when it came to foreign regions. Venalosian Pokémon could become personable once tamed, but seeing a large bug essentially blow a mocking raspberry at its own trainer was on another level.
She imagined one of her own Pokémon making such a human gesture, then broke into another fit of giggles at the sheer absurdity (and nigh impossibility) of the mental image.
"I can tell that you two are close, that your Golisopod feels comfortable enough to poke fun at you like that."
Safine pointed her Rotom Phone at the pair, snapping photo of Trainer and Pokémon together. Of course, she made sure to take it at an angle that ensured the man's face was not in the frame, to maintain his anonymity; it would have been exceedingly rude to do otherwise.
"Also, uh, what did you call it? Bulbapedia?" she asked, already typing it into her phone. "Ah, I see, I see... Oooooh, that'll be useful, actually."
Her Rotom Phone suddenly droned, "I keep telling you to look things up online, but do you ever listen to me? Nooooooo."
A pause.
"Bzzt."
Safine frowned, then scolded, "Quiet, you." She switched it to being muted, earning her another rolling of digital eyes.
"Anyway, you haven't answered my question," she continued, pulling out an oil-stained paper bag as she turned her attention back to the man and his Golisopod. "I was told the Pokémon around here love these fried treats! Uh, malasada, I think they're called."
if someone asked your muse what's their happiest moment, what would they reply? what about the darkest?
do you, the mun, agree with their answer or do you think they're lying, pretending or simply forgetting something?

*rubs my paws together, deviously*
"My happiest and darkest moments, huh?"
Rubina brought her cigar up to her lips, took an inhumanly long drag, and gave a deep exhale. The smoke billowed into the air like her own thoughts given form, messy and far-reaching despite her lackadaisical demeanour.
"My happiest moment... I'd say that's a toss-up between the day I first got married and the day my daughter was born. I'll never forget how beautiful my soon-to-be wife was, and the vows we made each other that day made me cry, I gotta admit. And my daughter... Ahh, my sweet, li'l Ada. She was so small, so precious. Look at her back then and you'd never think she'd grow up to knowin' how to take someone's head off. Hah! Well, you could also argue my happiest moment was seein' Rex hatch from his egg. Every bit as cute and tiny as my daughter was, if a li'l more scaly. Him and I grew up to become one helluva deadly pair, wouldn't you say?"
Another drag of her cigar and another acrid exhale, and her expression changed from fond reminiscence to mild amusement.
"My darkest moment was my first proper hunt against a Velocidrome. Nothin' bad happened, actually, but I did end up losin' my favourite barbecue spit. Hehe..."

Though Rubina tells the truth when saying her happiest moments were Rex hatching, her marriage, and the birth of Adamantia, her actual darkest moment was when everything came crashing down. She, her siblings, and her daughter are the last survivors of a once thriving extended family, who were all attacked by a powerful dragon during a family reunion/celebration. Rubina's wife didn't make it, and neither did Adamantia's twin brother, Perle. Though she was able to take revenge and now touts her once sworn nemesis around in the form of a sword, her failure to protect her family still haunts her to this day.
She frequently takes her frustrations out on the sword, too, often dunking it in freezing-cold water whenever she isn't kicking or punching it.

"I can't think of many happy moments," Marina admitted half-heartedly, adjusting her grip on her fishing pole. "Life's been dealing with problem after problem after problem."
There was a thoughtful -- albeit short-lived -- quiet as she furrowed her eyebrows.
"Wait, no, that's a lie. I can think of one moment, and that's when I saw Rubina trip and fall on her face last week. Hehehehe..."
-
🐼
So, it's pretty obvious that Marina is lying. She's very cagey when it comes down to it, always has been and always will be (I think). Her actual happiest moments were her own marriage and her own child, a son, who'll become a featured character after MH7 has been released.
His name is Emel, BTW. He's small and cute and extremely furious 24/7, you'll love him.
Her darkest moment is the same as Rubina, though. She was there to see it all happen and be traumatised by it, though was rendered unconscious half-way and pretty much left at Death's door. Had her sister not dragged her away, Marina would've also died that day. She doesn't remember a lot of it and for a while she blamed Rubina for what had transpired, though nowadays the two are on much better terms.

"An interesting question," Topace admitted with a smile, tapping their desk in a rhythmic, thoughtful manner. They gave a light hum as they considered what their happiest and darkest moments could be; there were some good candidates.
"Perhaps my happiest moment was the clearing of my name. You see, relatively early-on in my hunting career I was accused of poaching, a crime I never once committed. I would have been wrongfully executed, but by the grace of Loc Lac's good Guildmaster I was instead 'banished' to Moga Village, where I was forced to restart my career from the very bottom."
A smile, and then, "It could be argued that this was also my darkest moment. Anyway..."
Topace leaned back against their chair, their smile taking on a colder, more unnerving edge.
"After saving Moga from destruction, I received the message that the true perpetrators, the ones who had me accused and exiled, had been discovered and taken into custody. I was then permitted to return to Loc Lac, where I was most graciously given front-row seats to their trials and subsequent punishment. Ah, what a lovely day that was..."

Karma's a bitch, and Topace loves to revel in the suffering of those deserving of it. It's definitely up there for their happiest moment, a very strong contender, though it can also be argued that their happiest moment was... uh...
Well. I'll get back to you on that.
Their true darkest moment, however, is the same as Rubina's and Marina's. The three are the oldest of the Drakos siblings, and as such they were all witnesses to it. Topace remembers the most of it, what with Rubina blocking the memories out when she can and Marina having been actively dying for a large part of it. If they were ranked on who needs therapy the most and the soonest, #1 would probably be Topace.

"I had cheese waffles for breakfast, that was a pretty happy moment!" Ameth blurted out, with the same cadence as someone a quarter of his age. "And later, Goldie let me give her scratches for once! She almost never lets me do that!"
His cheerful expression faded, soon replaced by a pout.
"And then she sat on me. That was pretty rude and real dark, if you ask me."
-
🐼
Yeah, you're never gonna get a serious answer out of Ameth unless he trusts you with his life, and even then it's a coin toss at best. Perhaps his real happiest moment was when he came out as male to his loved ones and was immediately accepted for who he really is. Before transitioning he was a rather insecure person. Very jumpy, very twitchy, quick to question himself and occasionally startled by his own shadows. After beginning live as his true self he started to become more sure of himself and bolder.
Ameth's darkest moment was... not the day the Drakos family was destroyed. He was a child when it happened, so he doesn't remember much of it. Ameth is aware of the fact that it's the reason why he no longer has parents, grandparents, relatives, etc. But no, he doesn't have a darkest moment. Plenty of dark moments, sure, but nothing so bad that it truly affected who he is as a person.
Unless we're counting the Frenzy Virus, which is basically airborne rabies (though not nearly as deadly). Repeated infections have taken all the colour out of his hair, and is probably the reason why Ameth is a little unhinged.
-
Safine pinched her chin between her thumb and index finger, considering the question put forth. There were plenty of happy moments she could think of, indeed, and not exactly many dark ones. She opened her mouth to reply, let it hang open for an awkward second, then closed it again.
Slowly she began, "Well..." tilting her head from one side to the other.
"I guess my happiest moments are all the times I managed to save people. May it be just a single life or an entire town, it's always a good feeling to know that someone's alive because of you."
Her already uncertain expression darkened into one of despondence.
"My darkest moments are those times where I... fail. Sometimes, death is unavoidable. Sure. But then I'm always left wondering if I could've made a difference had I been faster, stronger, better. It keeps me up at night, knowing that I have blood on my hands even if indirectly."
-
🐼
Yep, that about sums it up for Safine. Like Ameth, she was too young to remember That Day in much detail, and she's always been honest even to a detrimental degree. Not much else to be said here.
-
"What? What kind of question is that?"
Adamantia took on a withering glare.
"I'm busy. Stop wasting my time."
-
🐼
Lol. Lmao, even. If you thought Marina was cagey, then Adamantia is... prison-y? Prison-y, yeah. kjioegrjeijknljbkrw
To answer for her, her happiest moment thus far was being accepted into the ranks of the Guild Knights. A lot of (metaphorical) blood, sweat, and tears went into achieving this title, and it's the one accomplishment she's truly proud of.
Thus far, she has no darkest moment... But, that can always change in the future, and she does occasionally wonder what happened to her other mother...
He's a little bloodied and worse for wear, but the excitement in his eyes is undeniable. It's like a kid being let loose in a candy store.
❝ Marina! I saw a Rajang. ❞
"Did you?"
Marina adjusted her grip on her whetstone, then dragged it across a lengthy, ice-cold blade with the distinct sound of metal being scraped. She did not bother pretending to be shocked since Guild reports indicated a Rajang prowling in the area. It was why she was sent out to begin with, after all. Neither did she pretend to be concerned for his wellbeing.
This man, Professor Friede... to say he was strange, or 'eccentric' if Marina was being nice for once, would have been an understatement. Lively to an obnoxious degree, courageous to the point of bordering on recklessness, he actually reminded her a lot of Venalos' own scholars and researchers. In all honesty, she had little respect for them. After all, there was no benefit to be had in potentially throwing one's life away just to figure out what an up-jumped murder monkey's favourite place to scratch its butt on was.
However, Friede was easy to talk to (and even easier to look at), so for now she gave him a pass.
"Come here," she ordered, replacing her tool and weapon with a small medical kit, "I'll get you patched up."
She did not pretend to be concerned for his wellbeing, sure... However, that did not mean she was about to risk him keeling over and dying from some sort of infection. Marina would at the very least clean up his injuries, even if only minor, if he let her.
Namielle as a whole were passive beasts -- as far as calamitous, weather-altering dragons were concerned -- so Deluge approached more out of idle curiosity than any kind of malice. She tilted her head upwards and spread out her writhing wings just a touch, though, when called big and beautiful, still quite the prideful beast. Indeed, it would have been difficult for anyone to not be in awe upon witnessing her abyssal splendour.
Prismatic hues trailed along four long whiskers in rhythmic, almost hypnotic patterns, and along the segments of her wings. Coated from head to tail in lovely blue shades and adorned with orange accents, it all made for a stunning display. Her near countless fangs left something to be desired, however, long and needle-like; perfect for biting down and never letting go. Her small, beady eyes were also chilling to behold, bordering on appearing soulless.
Deluge's pair of wings, so vast they might as well block out the heavens themselves, ended in tips reminiscent of spiked tentacles belonging to some kind of nightmarish squid. Completely ignoring the Lapras, one of those tentacles snaked from the salty water and into open air, slithering towards the human. Closer, and closer, and...
ZAP!
A poke to the nose followed by what could have only been described as an especially painful static shock. Deluge cackled, an ugly and high-pitched noise sounding like a throaty, choppy hiss. Still there was no malice to be sensed, however; was it an unorthodox "thank you" for the compliment, then? Perhaps a simple acknowledgement? Or maybe even a small experiment to see if this human was made from sterner stuff, so to speak?
The dragon may have cackled, sure, but was it really a laugh...?
All questions with no answers to be had, however, as Deluge dipped her head low and beneath the waves. Her vast, dark silhouette was almost impossible to make out as she swam away at a leisure pace, fast enough to disappear yet not so fast as to be impossible for a Lapras to keep up with... if one would choose to follow.
Her expression softened at Topace’s words, her fingers tightening just a little around her mug before she relaxed again. “Loc Lac, huh? Figures,” she said lightly. “I swear, if I ever need to track a Drakos, I should just assume you’re already on your way somewhere else.” She took a sip of her tea, then smiled over the rim. “Still… it’s good hearing you’re keeping busy. Both of you.” Her tone was easy, sincere. “The town feels quieter when its troublemakers wander too far.”
Marina’s exaggerated dismissal earned a short laugh from the witch; one she didn’t bother hiding. “Uh-huh. Sure. Just happened to stop by Ruby’s place first thing in the morning for no reason at all.” She tilted her head slightly, amused. At their comments about her putting people at ease, she waved one hand, a little sheepish but clearly touched. “I don’t know about all that. I just talk. Sometimes too much.” She shrugged. “Guess it helps when you spend most of your life meeting strangers who might try to kill you within the first five minutes.”
She leaned back in her chair, then glanced toward the door when Marina brought Rubina up again. “She said she was just grabbing supplies,” Gabriella replied. “Knowing her, she probably got distracted helping someone haul something twice her size. Or cooking advice. Or both.” A grin tugged at her lips. “As for a rematch…” She lifted her mug again. “You’ll get it. Ruby doesn’t dodge fights she cares about. She just likes to take her time.”
"Oh, she likes to take her time, alright," Marina retorted. Evidently still bitter, if a little exaggerated for comedic effect, she downed the rest of her tea as though it were cheap alcohol and poured herself more. "Patience of a mountain, sense o' humour of a mountain, and the urgency of a mountain."
After another sip, she made sure to add a hearty, "Phooey."
Topace rolled their shoulder while their sister spoke, smirking like a cheeky Qurupeco that had just tricked two giant beasts into a violent turf war, yet admittedly they were reeling from the strike. It would appear that, despite their own incredible resilience and combat prowess, they were not all that impervious to pain.
"Gabriella, you are correct regarding Rubina's tendency to face the grudges of others head-on, but you fail to consider the idea that Marina can be quite overbearing to the point that not even our dearest sister enjoys entertaining her petty desires for vengeance."
Topace gave a big, toothy grin in response to Marina shooting them a glare -- one of her eyebrows raised -- as if threatening to punch them in their pretty, little face this time. Of course, this was rather short-lived as they donned a more serious expression before speaking again.
"On a different note, what exactly did you mean by, 'meeting strangers who might try to kill you within the first five minutes'?"
"Oh, yeah, you did say that," Marina interjected, now her other eyebrow raised as well as she pointed towards Gabriella with an upturned hand. "You run into trouble lately? Someone giving you a hard time?"
"Simply say the word and we shall do everything within our combined power to rid you of anyone who may be a threat," Topace snarled. Their tone was just a touch more chilling than it usually was.
Marina nodded beside them, going for another sip of tea and doing precious little to hide that blood-thirsty glint in her eyes. The two siblings were itching for an excuse to exercise incredible, perhaps even excessive amounts of violence, it would seem.
