Random Tortall Thought

Is the Conte family heavily inbred? So, AFAIK we never get a full family tree for the entire nobility of Tortall, for obvious reasons, but it would fit.

My primary inspiration for this is how few children they seem to have, especially for a royal family. Now, healing magic probably means "death in childbirth" and "50% of children don't make it to age 20" are less common in Tortall, so the impetuous to have like 8 kids just in case is lessened. EVEN SO, Jasson III has 2 children(Roald V and someone we don't know) who live to have kids of their own. Each of those sons has one son who is alive at the start of the series(King Jonathan IV and Duke Roger). And it took 5 years after the marriage for Roald and Lianne to have Jonathan. That's just poor decision-making for a Royal family. Not to mention that Duke Roger either never married or something happened to his marriage, and this wasn't mentioned despite him being in his 30's during the series. Why would the man who is both wealthy and third in line for the throne not have a wife?

Now, again, we don't have a family tree. But Roald was married to a Naxen, one of the oldest families in Tortall with close ties to the royal family. Jasson married outside the country, to a noblewoman from Barzun, except that Barzun has married into Tortall regularly enough that the names get confusing. Jonathan married a Scanran princess with no blood ties to anyone and she proceeded to pop out 6 children in like 8 years. This isn't proof of anything, but I'm just saying, introduce some new genes to the pool and suddenly the Conte family is having children again.

I don't think this has to heavily affect anything, to be clear. I just think it's funny if Jonathan's the first member of his family in centuries to not marry a second cousin and no one even thinks to mention it.
