JOURNALING ABOUT MY CHOSEN POEM

A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM Edgar Allan Poe

I have chosen this poem for a few reasons. Upon googling ‘famous poems’, a fairly extensive list came up. Clicking through each I was unmoved by many. But when I came across this poem I was entranced. There were many qualities I very much liked about it, such as it’s clever rhymes and questioning tone. I like how it constantly makes the reader question things that it has suggested.

I think the main ideas expressed through this poem are defeat, confusion, and dealing with the reality of life and death. The idea of defeat is most clearly presented in the second stanza, which is also the last stanza of the poem. A line that shows this and one that resonated with me was 'O God! Can I not save/One from the pitiless wave?’ In this line Poe was talking about his inability to save a meagre grain of sand, a task that should be easy to do considering the size and weight of a grain of sand. Another set of lines that impacted me were 'You are not wrong, who deem/That my days have been a dream;’ These lines stunned me in a way. They indicated to me the general theme and gave me insight into the poets mind.

One analysis I found of the poem was from gradesaver.com ( http://www.gradesaver.com/poes-poetry/study-guide/summary-a-dream-within-a-dream ). The only paragraph I fully agreed with was the final one, which discussed how the title changed the perception of the poem for each reader, and a few possible theories on why Poe chose to use 'a dream’ as a vessel in which to tell his story, and what this 'dream’ could imply. Everything else that was mentioned in this analysis was entirely different from how I interpreted the poem. This analysis saw the majority of the first stanza as Poe leaving his lover, whereas I saw it as Poe leaving his life and beginning to pass on. The second paragraph discusses the imagery of the seashore and the grains of sand. This analysis saw the grains as time passing and love running out, whereas I read it as the poet accepting defeat and being unable to control even the smallest things. I also agreed with the third paragraph in some aspects, and the fourth.

I discovered a new perspective through reading this analysis p, even though I do not agree with it. Some of the structure of the poem and certain imagery that I could not fully interpret became clearer to me through reading this analysis. I feel as though through this experience I have a MUCH clearer understanding of the poem and of my own thoughts on it.

Journaling About Australian Poetry

1. What preconceived ideas do you have about poetry?  Do these poems confirm or challenge your ideas? A thought I often have about poetry is that it is often unnecessarily 'deep'. Quite usually the message of the writer is lost behind the descriptive and far fetched wording. It was nice to read through some of these poems and see the words being used actually describe and enhance the features of the land being discussed, but then again there were some poems that lost their power through their overly complex wording and the descriptive language used, as it didn't fit the feeling the poem was giving off. 2. What ideas about Australia can you see expressed in the various poems? A common theme expressed through all of these poems is beauty of the land and it's natural features, and the ugliness of those who have possessed it without consent, destroyed it, and altered it to the point of no return. 3. Which poems appeal to you the most or least and why? The poem that appealed to me the most was the first one. I really liked the use of language, especially when the writer used words that contain beauty within themselves to portray objects and landscapes as even more breathtaking than they already are. It was overall pleasurable to read and made Australia's landscapes sound incredible. My expectations of the next few poems were set quite high thanks to this one, so the rest didn't appeal to me very much at all. They were more focused on condemning those who had destroyed Australia, which I think is a very important thing to discuss, but reading this right after reading of the wonders contained in this country? It was a bit of a downer. They crushed my good mood.
