I don't disagree it's possible to vote out fascists, but I think the real question is whether this accomplishes anything beyond giving them a couple terms' vacation before they can slip back in and pick up right where they left off. Especially in the USA where it seems no amount of Repub fuckups can ever actually put their chances of winning below 50%

I mean it accomplishes getting them out of office, which is extremely fucking important, and then, yes, you have to keep campaigning and voting against them for the rest of your life. There is no one election that is going to #own the other party into not existing anymore.

We vote in every election forever. That is how this works.

If you get tired of that, the fascists are happy to provide an alternative.

If you're a new writer and you're asking yourself "is this too personal, is this too much, will people think this is weird" that feeling is the exact location of your actual voice. The stuff that makes you want to close the laptop is the stuff nobody else could write. The safe version is always worse. Always. I have never once read something and thought "this would have been better if it was a little less honest." go further. It's always go further.

One of things that bugs me about the "Why would you put real-world bigotry in your fantasy setting?? Is it because you just LOVE BIGOTRY???" discourse is the unquestioned assumption that people will only find it comforting to read about egalitarian utopias. And that is wildly out of step with my own experience.

Speaking personally: I am both a woman and not straight, and when I read fiction in settings where sexism and homophobia are deeply ingrained, I find it meaningful to see characters navigating those realities while finding a place for themselves. That goes for historical fiction certainly, but it also goes for medieval-esque fantasy settings that are informed by (if not always 100% true to) the real societal frameworks of those eras.

It can be lovely to read stories set in an egalitarian paradise sometimes, but personally I also find it deeply comforting to read stories where the world isn't perfect or even close, where the bigotry is very real, and yet people find a way to live the fullest lives possible within those constraints. Because that is exactly what people did throughout history, and that is what many people still have to do.

And as someone who grew up surrounded by extremely normalized homophobia, sometimes I don't want my fiction to create a place where that kind of bigotry doesn't exist. Sometimes I want it to be there so the story can explore it. I don't think certain people seem to understand that for some of us, this can be what feels comforting and makes us feel seen. Not "Wow, this character will never have to face the things I do" but "Look, this character is facing something very much like what I do, and what my ancestors did, and I love them all the more for it."

I was dubious on the idea that "cozy" isn't a good game descriptor but upon a further investigation and seeing just how many "cozy" games involve cooking that takes more work than a single button click I wholeheartedly agree with that take. It really is too much of a subjective descriptor treated as an objective one.

Gotta tell you guys something wild in the Chinese fan sphere

So some fanartist drew a “sexy” (read: booby) version of a (cartoon) character who is traditionally very non-sexualised. Fans of the character got mad about it because it’s kind of groundbreaking how that character is written and portrayed and this art totally ignores the entire point of the character. They demanded the art be deleted. In response to that other people said, well what the fanartist did may be distateful but they have every right to draw what they’re into. The two sides fight for days and each starts a harassment campaign and even report their “opponents’” accounts.

So far so typical. But things eventually come to a head and they decide that this will be settled by votes - not through a poll. Through donations to a children’s education charity via each side’s portal. Whoever can get the highest amount of donation wins.

And that is how this charity received over 1 million in donations in three days lol. Oh btw the “freedom of expression” side won by a landslide (960k to 40k)
