     “ hey, uh — how do you manage to fight in those? ” sure, all the noise from the fighting was loud, but it was kind of easy to pick out the sound of wheels when evan wouldn’t have expected it. a few feet away from him, there’s the kid spinning around in them, the skates easier to notice as soon as evan actually looks at them. there’s a bat, too, and while evan can’t tell if it’s being used, he assumes it is just out of good will. “ isn’t it ever.. uh, hard to move while fighting? ”

    well, maybe he’d been trained in that, considering all evan had managed to pull off was running or flying with mir while in combat, but it was certainly still interesting.

★ ʟɪʟ sʟᴜɢɢᴇʀ ʟᴀᴜɢʜs ᴀᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ǫᴜᴇsᴛɪᴏɴ, at the idea of it being hard to fight in rollerblades.  he’d been born with them; it was harder to walk without them than to ride with them, and whacking people and creatures alike on the go was just fine for him; quite literally, it was second nature.  

“i wear them all the time,” he says, ending his sentence with a grunt as he sent a little flying monster soaring up and splatting against a wall of rubble.  “it’s fun to me.”

“I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the big pit, but it’s super cool looking.” Steven said as they walked down the street towards the center of the city. He knew they had to go there to start their mission, and he was way more excited than scared. He still knew to be cautious, however.

“It’s also really deep. My floating and bubble will protect us if we fall in…so maybe we should hold hands just to be safe?”

★ "ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴡᴀsɴ'ᴛ sᴍᴏᴏᴛʜ," maromi deadpanned, but he couldn’t hate the attempt.  he had so desperately wanted to try and get closer to steven as the days went on, and literally teleported to him as soon as that weirdo android lady talked about getting into teams.  “but if we gotta go in it, i’ll go in it with you.  after we do the thing.” he waggled the gun he held in his hand.  

“we need to find a something between two branching roads.” on the radar was a little glowing blue dot smack dab in between two roads that split apart from each other.

★ GLAD TO SEE YOU’RE OK. ★

“W-What the hoohah!?” He looked over his shoulder. Did this this kid have teleporting powers!? That was awesome! It made him feel less weird about being magic, at least.

“I didn’t think you could do that! That was so cool!” Steven smiled and took his hands again.

★ ʜᴇ ᴄᴏᴜʟᴅɴ'ᴛ ʜᴇʟᴘ ʙᴜᴛ ʟᴀᴜɢʜ.  “yeah, i can do that.”  he said, a prideful note in his voice.  “glad to know you like it.” he starts to dance a little again, growing more enthusiastic as the song went on and switched to something more upbeat, less groovy.  

this was... this was fun.  damn.  maromi had never had fun outside of his mission before.  it was... well, nice was an understatement, but he didn’t really have a word for the soft warmth blooming in his chest, something that twinged with what could have been a bit of leftover cynicsm (when’s it gonna end, he wonders, when’s it all gonna come crashing down on him), but felt too... too something else for that.  too something else that was positive.  almost like hope.

“Oh. Um, it’s just… I’m magic.  My mom was a magic alien and my dad was a human…so…” Was it not fun anymore? Dancing was supposed to be fun, but now this kid was staring at him like he was weird. He squeezed his eyes shut as the memory took over.

They were Stevonnie, and they were going to a dance. They were having fun, but no one else was dancing…Why wasn’t anyone else dancing? Everyone was staring at them…like they were weird. He opened his eyes.

“I’m sorry!” Steven backed up, his feet firmly on the ground now. Not happy enough to float. 

★ "ɴ-ɴᴏ, ɴᴏ ɴᴏ, ᴅᴏɴ'ᴛ––" maromi stumbled on his words, shaking his head.  “if... if it’s good, it’s fine.”  to show the kid a bit of magical solidarity, he blipped out of existence and behind steven, gently nudging him.  “it’s ok.  i get it.  just... wanted to make sure you were okay.  didn’t expect it.”

why was he getting so damn soft over one kid!?  god, this stupid city was doing things to him.  it was nasty.  “i wanna dance.  i just didn’t think you would float.”
