Just saw Project Hail Mary as a science person the literal only thing I can’t let go and give to suspension of disbelief is this: the scene with the centrifuge! YOU HAVE TO BALANCE IT. The samples should have been OPPOSITE not ADJACENT.
Haven't seen it, but.... They did what?!
actually the idea that Dick, the eldest, the only one who ever wore the cowl long term, the only one who raised a Robin on his own, is also the only one who can successfully, perfectly replicate that barked ROBIN! in Bruce's voice? the only one who can pull that exact tone from the depths of his soul, to the point where his voice is identical, so identical that old Robins like Jason are obeying before their minds even realize their bodies are moving? that Dick is the only one, has always been the only one, who can channel Bruce's voice? can channel Batman himself? I am going feral
i’m so glad goncharov happened pre ai slop era
#weird way to describe 1973 but i guess it’s accurate
My emotions about space travel, and the history of, are strong today.
In this small blue dot where we share our lives for a fraction of a moment of the universe, that small pill takes but a handful of us out into the vastness beyond.
Me: It was so difficult to get to this island, but now that I'm finally here, I desperately need some kind of public transport to get around.
This humble bird in particular:
Dominatrix: No, sorry, I've just broken my ankle. There's no way I'll be able to host your all-female whip party.
This eager bird, specifically:
Annoying flatmate: Hey guys, uh, can we just have a quick house meeting in ten? Just some 'stuff' we need to, um ... go over again, okay?
This exasperated bird, knowingly:
Camerlengo at the conclave for the next pope: (sighs) ... All right, I thought we all understood the dress code, but obviously we need to go over it again.
This bird, looking around awkwardly:
Me: Gee, I hope this tarot reading says I'm going to make some new friends soon!
This jerk, patiently getting ready:
17th century Witchfinder: By God's truest judgment, the heretic Will Scunthorpe has been hurled from a cliff for practicing the most vile of dark magicks. What now should follow? This hoary misogynist, trying to rile up the crowd:
37-year-old white incel: Um, actually, Officer, technically only these three are ‘katanas’. Those four are ‘tantos’, that’s a ‘wakizashi’, and the big one on the wall is a ‘nagamaki’ … What?... Why do I have so many weapons? … Oh, it’s just my, er …
This bird, trying to help out:
I am deeply uncomfortable with this man's corner
so, dogs are good, right? its practically a truism that dogs are good. and then dogshit is bad. so there's a connection there.
horseshit is false, unreliable, and horses are very reliable. bullshit is also false, but carries an additional implication of trickery, while bulls are extremely straightforward and guileless.
so, with the pattern established... what's up with bats? are they particularly sane? is a bat's view of the world more accurate than ours? much to consider.

It's freaky how the brain will just plasticly learn novel motor output interfaces on the fly. It's almost like instead of hard coding a control scheme for anatomy that changes every few million years the strat that brains went for was to be openly reconfigurable to fit around whatever its nerves seem to be hooked up to via observed feedback.
I think they've done tests on this by getting people to pilot novel bodies in VR. But you don't tend to notice it day to day until something weird happens like just now. I was reading a paper book and it had a line of text blacked out as if redacted. Instinctively I go to move my cursor over the black line to see if I can read any text if I highlight it.
Except it's a book and not my computer screen, so the cursor my brain thinks it's moving across my field of vision in front of me doesn't exist. At the same time, my right hand is making a bunch of small involuntary movements next to me. I didn't intend to move it and didn't even notice it was moving until I saw it with my eyes. What I intended to move was my Cursor, something that my brain had learned to understand that it has, and the way it moves this is by actuating the muscles in my right arm, an action that is entirely disconnected from any intent to move my arm, which is a different thing.
I love being a pattern atop this eldritch mess of neurons, it's great
father I cannot click the book

There’s this myth amongst healthy people that being chronically ill exists in a vacuum. That yes, you lose your health, but everything else in life stays the same. And that’s just not even close to the truth. Being sick affects everything. Not a single aspect of life is left unchanged.
Chronic illness changes everything- the friends you have, the food you eat, the movies you can watch, the hobbies you do, your job, your education, your family, your relationships, etc, etc, etc.
There is no such thing as “just health,” or “just physical ability.” Chronic illness is a malignancy, and it slithers its way into each and every aspect of a person’s life.
Days when your energy is drained and you wish to meet a goal but can't bring yourself to ask for help because you've done it so many times before and your family has done so much for you and it's not like they didn't want to help you but you can see how the world has changed not only for you but for them as well and you are still trying to climb the slope into which you fell, not by choice but by circumstance, and they see you looking better but changed forever.
I just need water to do the dishes.
triops are one of my all-time fave little guys
their name comes from their three eyes. if i'm correctly recalling the Wikipedia page i read, they exist dormant, possibly for years, waiting for sufficient rainfall in the desert to emerge.

What with bucket hats, bare midriffs, and flared jeans having been resurrected by some irresponsible necromancer with frosted tips, I figure there’s no better time to resurrect some of my favorite Y2K fonts. I typically only see the same three or four pop up in discussions on the subject, so maybe this will be helpful to nostalgic designers. Click though for links.

Honorable mention to Yeoman Jack, an excellent free modern face by Iconian that looks more like it’s from the early 2000s than many of their actually 20 year old fonts. I tried to stick to fonts that I was pretty sure were not based on an existing typeface. I only left out Typodermic because Ray Larabie’s work is already so popular and well known, but Neuropol is obviously a classic. Check out his stuff if you’re nor familiar.
