treasures from the garden
sun tattoos
I landed in a garden of thornes and dried roses to which I took to with a pair of shears and no sunscreen. Every kind of insect landed on my skin and left unscathed. In any other circumstance I could imagine myself squeamish and disturbed but the journey exhausted my senses to a state of tired that required little accommodation for encounters with nature. It was perhaps the purpose of the journey in the first place. Arrive and accept. Needles and petals, earth and sun.
It hadn't rained in days. Piles of stems formed on the peripheries while my blades continued to cut and trim. In midday heat there is no silence; it is replaced by the noise of travelling light. I didn't crave the vacuum of a soundless night; having slept with my eyes open flying east toward perpetual dusk, the time of day was of no consequence. My fingers urged my hands to learn the textures of the garden, a masochistic desire - to be pricked and stung, or a purely human one - to feel things as they are born and not as they are constructed.
I finally collapsed face down into the grass, victim to heat and jet travel. As effective as it was in keeping me awake well into the afternoon, the heat lulled me into a sweaty pool of sleep. Sleep is never complete in daylight, but somehow more effective. In the depths of it I was lost to vague euphorias, from one's arms, or another's heart, or both. The rays left tattoos from the lines of my underwear down the length of my legs. A new day began at 19:00_

The Cavaliers
Herman was the gentle one or so he claimed. In truth the boy was cold. Albin was more arrogant but always fell to his knees when Herman took what he desired. Both held their hearts in the palm of their right hand.

They were afraid to tell you that one day your hat will fall, your shoes will get dirty and all the books in the world won't have the answer.

When the stars faded, she found herself breathless from pretending to smile. He stood speechless behind the velvet curtain as she walked away for the last time.
Maybe that's not what happened, but one can't always imagine happy endings.

It doesn't matter what she's doing or whether it's a hose or a pipe. She's got poise and power in those heels. That's all you need be concerned with. c.1950
On the other side of love, there were only shadows. It didn't take long to forget her face. She had turned away some time before the sun set.

They were outnumbered, but two is a stronger dynamic than three... no less complicated in any case. c.1950, on the beach
The childish impulse to be all-grown-up reverses with age. At some point we wish we could be children again.
