YOU GUYS KNOW THAT LIKING A SHITTY CHARACTER AS THEY ARE DOESN’T MEAN THAT YOU CONDONE THEIR BEHAVIOUR RIGHT????? RIGHT???? YOU GUYS KNOW THAG YOU CAN JUST ENJOY FICTION RIGHT?????
When you think live is going great and suddendly turns out it just was waiting to punch you in the gut and drag you to the worst years to come
Every friend group should include:
That's it. That's the dream. I'm almost mad that that's the dream.
LGBT rights in the Middle East.
Like yes sorry I am actually fucking furious that there are people in Israel who have been fighting for peace and equality for Israelis and Palestinians for years and years without acknowledgement or support from the broader international left, and since you weren't spoonfed this information by the Tumblr School of International Relations you wanna just act like it's never existed.
Fuck you.
I will add to the frustration right now with some examples.
when Palestinian reporters and activists are harassed and murdered by the PLO and Hamas, it is our solidarity organizations that fight for their justice, not the international left. Did you know that the PLO is preventing people from trying to find a replacement to Abbas?
There is staggering violence within Palestinian community, if it be against women, queers, crime families and blood feuds. for example, I know someone from a family that has a blood feud with another family, and since they were the last to hit, all the kids of the family are hiding right now. I do not see the international left talking about it, but it is a subject that local solidarity organizations are pushing to solve.
The Bedouin community in the Negev mostly lives in unauthorized villages with DIY utilities that get destroyed often, living people in horrible conditions. This is a mix of a cultural and bureaucratic problem that is one of the main problems I see my fellow activists talk about, and where is the international left?
There are organizations that work to improve women's rights in Palestinian communities, including help older women get jobs, independence and education so they would not be under the whims of abusive men. that is a great cause! and no one outside talks about it.
Leftist activists regularly join Palestinians while harvesting their goods in order to protect them from settlers, and more then once got physically injured during that. Do you even care? or is it easier to Imagine that all Israelis want to destroy Palestinian fields.
There are Israeli organizations to help protect queer Palestinian youth from violence and in some cases even help them immigrate to someplace far so they could be safe. those programs also work with queer Palestinian programs for mutual support. Don't you wanna support those programs
there is so much more that people do here. but they don't care, because they decided that Israel is a "settler colonial state" that must be abolished and that all Israeli are evil white colonizers, and since this conflict is only good poor brown Palestinian and Evil white European Jews Zionist people, all that solidarity work is unimportant for them.
The thing where someone says "hi I'm [non-white but also not Jewish or Palestinian or Druze or any particular ethnic group affected by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict] so here's my authoritative opinion about Israel" is profoundly frustrating.
It's reasonable to look at and discuss the way systems of oppression may have similarities across various regions but I'm sorry, there's nothing about being a non-Palestinian gentile in the US, or Europe, or anywhere else that makes you uniquely qualified over other non-Palestinian gentiles to comment on Israel or Palestine.
It's 1942. You don't need to be German or Jewish to know that the Holocaust is wrong and the Nazis ought to be stopped.
Exhibit A: Someone who doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about but thinks their voice is deeply important anyway.
Gentle reminder to anyone able to make it to any protests coming up please practice proper protest etiquette both for your own safety and that of others.
Wear a mask, cover any tattoos, and don't wear clothing with recognizable logos or branding. Don't take pictures of yourself or others. Don't talk to cops.
Protests aren't a fun event to post about on social media, we are trying to make an real change. Be safe and responsible
the way americans talk about protest marches on here is insane. Like is this actually necessary in the usa or is it just tumblr neurosis?
Oh, it's definitely necessary.
anyone who thinks surveillance is a purely american phenomenon is a fool. every state is a surveillance state.
Also dont harass other civilians, they do not represent the forces you are protesting against.
embracing the patterned ambiguity of gender and sex as more or less social constructs can grant you so much more precision in thinking about so many concepts in science.
like, if there was a study (and I'm just making this up as an example) showing women suffer from mosquito bites more than men do
you could do the ~"Gender Critical"~ thing and go "see!? mosquitoes get it!!"
OR
you could go "that's interesting" and start asking more questions, like:
is this data self-reported? controlled?
were they studying the women or the mosquitoes?
did the study use methods that would let you tell the difference between "being bitten more often" and "noticing bites more often"?
did the study include any trans people and were their results any different? if yes were they on HRT or not?
how similar were the men and women in aspects other than gender? do we know their social class, jobs, diets, blood types?
because in fact the study i made up just then could lead to a huge variety of conclusions. from my description above you can't tell the difference between studies that show:
mosquitoes are attracted to people with higher estrogen levels
mosquitoes are opportunistic and women spend more time near mosquito habitats for sociocultural reasons
every gender gets bitten about the same amount but men are socialised to pay less attention to physical discomfort so more of them don't notice minor bites compared to women (and by more we mean like 60-40, this is a bell curve thing)
we accidentally got heaps of women in the study that have the mosquito's favourite blood type and not so for the men, oops
mosquitoes are attracted to people with more x and y in their diets, which is currently mostly women for, again, largely sociocultural reasons
etc etc etc
you're just not going to understand actual Gender Science, and therefore reality, if you can't put "hmm, but what do they mean by woman this time" in your mental toolkit in a relatively neutral way.
Honestly this is a great way of presenting the kind of scientific literacy that is needed in an era of clickbait headlines and sound bites and facts that turn into memes; so much science "news" as reported by mass media distills nuanced studies into easily quotable and shocking one-liners that generally ignore the context behind the statistic.
