Over time, he grows more and more distant from the Mentat that reluctantly raised him, a chasm opening between retainer and charge. Wealth, violence, and adroit manipulation keep House Harkonnen afloat, but none of it is enough to foster true loyalty.
The Baron succumbs to Duke Leto's poisoned tooth, leaving the Beast to serve as regent of House Harkonnen. Piter survives, but he does not escape unscathed—for part of him died on Arrakis.
