MOBSTERS IN LOVE VOLUME 1

I did more reading than watching this week. I think the only thing I watched was the latest episode of Go For It, Nakamura-kun, which remains cute, and I'm waiting to see how far it develops.

I listened to the audiobook versions of volumes 1 and 2 of The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter. Have I read them already? Yes. Do I own at least one volume already? Yes. Still, the audiobooks were done well so it was a fun experience. 10/10 would recommend. Time to rewatch the anime, I'm certifiably obsessed.

I bought the manga for My Dear Agent and Mobsters in Love this week. I've read them before, a while ago - still just as cute the second time around. I'm happy to add them to my collection.

I also picked up a one shot, You're All Mine Tonight. Not bad. Definitely spicy, and the conclusion wrapped up quick. Nice art, good for what it is. My credit card is not happy with all these purchases but this is the price of my happiness.

I read up to volume 4 of Minato's Laundromat. I have...some questions for the author. No matter how slice of life the setting, I don't think you can quite categorize a BL about a teenager and a thirty-something as 'fluffy'. It's written well, but like, what are we doing here??? Even Minato acknowledges it's not right early on so why are we acting like the teenager being the pursuer makes it justifiable?

All I've done this week is surround myself with BL - watching, listening, reading, writing, reviewing - that is to say, a great week.

If I had told him about my illness... knowing Ryu, he probably would have insisted on taking care of me. But you know, that wasn't the happiness I wanted for him.

and NOW im thinking of how Ryu saying how he was scared to be liked, and was scared of his own feelings in the church, but Johan helped him overcome that, and how once he thinks Johan is not just pulling away from him but actively choosing to spend time with someone else (from Ryu's POV from limited facts) that's the first time we see Ryu be anything other than patient and kind towards Johan when he confronts him, immediately reverting back to his old self only this time he's not physically running away he's running away emotionally by immediately shutting down and refusing to look at Johan when he's saying goodbye to Sumiko, and forcing back his tears when Johan waves goodbye bc to cry would be (imo) to admit to those feelings he's once again scared of, but despite that he had to watch Johan walk away. its okay Ryu my man I can cry enough for the both of us </3

ソウルメイト Soul Mate (2026)

I spent my weekend watching Soul Mate starring Ok Taecyeon and Hayato Isomura. Absolutely devastating - I started crying in episode 5 and didn’t stop until I reached the finale.

I particularly liked the juxtaposition of Japanese and Korean drama approaches, and of course both are prone to delve into the cruel and the heartbreaking, to tell stories of the worst of people’s lives and the vilest of humanity. This drama allows you to be happy for 0.2 seconds before wrenching those dregs away from you.

It’s impressive to watch Ok Taecyeon morph from the ruthless villain he played in Vincenzo to a beaten-down young man seeking a place to belong. I also appreciate the bold move for a recently married K-Pop idol to take on a queer role - I think he was perfectly suited to play Johan.

The story itself focuses on the moment. The characters never have time to consider life-altering decisions, and must consistently respond with their instinctual feelings. The many faces of friendship and love are tested by the harsh realities of everyday life.

Ryu and Johan meet because they are both running away. Each of them runs away again and again until they realize they have only fleeting time left to be together.

The queer nuances to this show are what truly got to me, alongside the imperceptible struggles the characters take on to forge new meaning in a thoughtless world. The first scene that brought me to tears was Johan quietly working on his Japanese studies. A man who previously lived his life without concern for himself took the first tiny step forward to embracing something he wanted.

Ryu running to Johan’s train window to share his number, Johan sketching Ryu, who kept it on display, the two of them moving in together, later helping to raise Kanau as though she were their own – they may not have said “I love you” until the final scene, but they were intertwined in each other’s lives to a degree that made them inseparable across time and distance. This is less a BL than it is, as Apo described Shine (I think), a “gay drama”. It’s poignant and painful.

on the docket -what i’m watching

The Summer Hikaru Died (completed)

So, I read the TSHD manga a while ago, which means I didn’t fully remember all the details until I watched the anime. My reaction to both forms of the story was the same: the story is do interesting because it’s so twisted and disgusting. Yoshiki is a desperately selfish character clinging at any opportunity to keep his only friend, even if the friend is a possessed corpse. I don’t recall the conclusion so I can relive it if they continue with a second season.

Goddess Bless You From Death (completed)

Ah, GBYFD. I have away given the award for stupidest and most incompetent BL police force several times now (see: The Sign and Dare You To Death), but GBYFD is now the current winner. Literally everyone and their brother died or almost died (like, LITERALLY) before they finally caught the culprits. I mean, at least we get PoohPavel kisses and an engagement scene. Still, for this to come out in the same year as Khemjira means it was destined to be overshadowed.

Go For It, Nakamura-kun!! (caught up to episode 7)

I am loving this anime so much. It’s pure and innocent, cute and refreshing. I hope Hirose recognizes and reciprocates Nakamura’s feelings by the end!! Nakamura reminds me a little bit of Mob from Mob Psycho 100. If there’s a manga for this I need to read it.

bonus: what i’m reading

Case File Compendium Volume 2 (completed)

I’m torn on this one. I really like the plot and the modern setting, and I really want to see where it goes. However, it falls into that all-too-common trope trap of non-con with the main couple just because there are psychological and criminal elements involved. I usually try to steer clear of that, so I’m unsure if I will continue the series.

The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System Volume 4 (just started)

Yeah, so, those volumes I thrifted out of order - I decided to just jump into them. I have no context or understanding of the characters, lol. This volume is all side stories, and I’ve put two and two enough together to gather a rough idea of the plotline. I haven’t gotten far with it but I’m having fun.

this week’s been full of impulse spending and BL shenanigans.

I bought volume 2 of Case File Compendium and thrifted a few random danmei volumes, which I kind of own out of order now: Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation volume 4 (I only have volume 1), The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System volume 4, and The Husky & His White Cat Shizun volume 5.

I may search around for the other volumes first or just read what I have and see how confused I get, lol. The historical danmei aren’t my favorite but I still enjoy them every once in awhile. I want to start buying more BL manga too.

Isekai Office Worker: The Other World’s Books Depend on the Bean Counter (anime, completed)

I already posted a review of this, I loved it and I will be eagerly awaiting season 2.

The Gentle Noble’s Vacation Recommendation (anime, completed)

Technically this is not a BL, but it’s some of the gayest shit I’ve ever seen, so it makes the list. I also had fun with this and it seems like the ending suggests another season.

10Dance (movie, rewatch)

I’m on a Keita Machida kick since he’s in a new (non-BL) series, Sins of Kujo. Which leads us back to:

Cherry Magic (drama and anime, rewatch)

It doesn’t matter how many times I watch Cherry Magic, I love it to bits and pieces. Every scene has me kicking my feet just as much as the first watch. This of course means it will be time to re-read the manga and wait impatiently for the latest volume to release in November.

Go For It, Nakamura-Kun!! (anime, just finished episode 1)

So cute. It reminds me of the opening line from Chappell Roan’s Naked in Manhattan: “new crush/high school love again”. I love that we’re seeing BL and queer stories start to become more prevalent. It’s only a couple of episodes, so short and sweet.

I started and sort of dropped two other BL series, Love Like a Bike and Dating Game. The latter is the only one of the two I may pick up again; the first I dropped from cringe two minutes in. We’ll see if I change my mind eventually. I also intend to watch The Red Envelope starring Billikin & PPKrit.
