Avery:
Avery is a Botany major. This stems from an experience when he was five and accidentally overwatered a cactus, to which(after crying about it for two weeks) he decided to actually get into gardening, though his parents didnāt let him do much work until he was 17 due to ācleanlinessā, so he mostly just watched his father so it.
Stemming from the last headcanon, Avery has a bunch of miscellaneous plants around hisapartment that he unironically treats better than he does himself.

Doesnāt have much actual presence online but does sometimes leave comments on youtube.
His family was one of those well off but not quite rich upper middle class families that arenāt snobby per say but do feel the need to hold themselves with an air of class. Maybe mildly religious.
His mom was a neurologist and his dad is a restaurant owner. Has a brother(eight years older) who is studying to be a physician.
He loves his family, but compared to them he feels sort ofā¦ lacking? Everyone else is super hard working and successful while heās here, taking care of 12 plants and unironically having one of his best skills be his ability to play skywars. Doesnāt help that they have a bit of a habit of viewing him as the ābabyā of the family since heās the youngest.
The reason they didnāt check up on him during new years eve was because he goes to college in another state. They did actually call him several times but due to either being in a KIY induced trance or rushing to help Derek he didnāt respond to any of them, prompting them to very frantically call him the next day mid āoh my god a guy died because of me and I couldnāt save them and I canāt tell anyone without sounding insaneā crisis.
It was not a fun phone call. Avery definitely had to bullshit himself out of a LOT of explanations.
Post DAWTDE he gets diagnosed with ADHD.
The book in the church had a mix of Act 2 of the play and a degradation of his ego. Due to this he actually has a lot of knowledge he didnāt have before. Not enough to ruin his mind but enough to weasel a bit of the KIY into is pre possession.
This has the side effect of giving him random bouts of knowledge about completely random things. This is not useful as it is completely random and spontaneous.
For example: he can tell you the entire life story of a woman who died in the 60ās and can quote 3/4s of a movie that is now lost media. He knows where cleopatraās tomb is located.
Derek:
Has a habit of being clingy. Only natural when youāve been touch starved all your life and havenāt had any actual human interaction in months.
Donāt let his put together act fool you. His apartment was a mess even pre-KIY.
Went to a prestigious college for a year or two, then gifted child burnout hit. was mid-way through a identity crisis about being āthe smart oneā before. Well. Yāknow.
Used minecraft as sort of an escape from all that.
Grew up in a very weird financial situacion. His father split from his mother when he was four, gave child support and occasionally visited until he remmarried when Derek was 11. Then mostly dissapeared leaving only teh child support check for his mother to work with.
He has two siblings, an older sister(two years older) who plays in a bandand a younger brother(four years younger) who is an art student.
Has a very casual relashionship with them. Lots of teasing and inside jokes and the like.
Has a habit of randomly locking himself in his apartment for a few months when busy.
Told his family he was working on something for new years eve. Promised theyād have a small movie night together afterwards to make up for it.
Definitely the type to accidentally forget his own birthday due to work.

Post KIY his glasses have a weird yellow sheen to them. It carries over through pairs. Even sunglasses.
While they donāt live next to each other, they definitely lived in the same apartment complex. Has probably been in the same room as Avery once or twice, but theyāve never had an actual conversation.
Has slightly worse sight in his left eye. Not enough to be drastic but enough to beed different prescriptionās for each lens.
His sister read The King In Yellow(the book of short stories NOT the play) when they were youngef for a school essay. He told himself heād check it out but never did.
