What is the meaning of international law at this point when some countries are allowed complete impunity to do whatever they want without consequences
I HAVE TO DO THE WORK SO THAT MY LIFE CAN BE DIFFERENT AND I CAN REAP THE BENEFITS
how stranger things should have reduced their characters:
murray should have died in season 4. in season 5, hopper could be the smuggler while also training el.
eddie , although likeable, shouldn’t have existed. the dnd club could have been led by robin, who is also nerdy and poor and likes music, and she could have also been selling drugs on the side.
vickie, although also likeable, shouldn’t exist either. instead, make robin fall for nancy. nancy could also volunteer, at the hospital, while ALSO being Gun Girl. Nuance!
Instead of Holly, Vecna should have taken Mike. He has been a main character since season 1, and is clearly a very repressed character which is barely being explored on screen because of the show’s focus on his little sister. Furthermore, his actions are barely useful. Fix all that by giving his sister’s role to him.
Then, instead of the other kids like Derek, we could also have other teenagers who have been in the show since the beginning because they are Mike’s age.
Finally Mr Clarke…that could have been done by anyone I’m sorry. If Mike randomly knows how to build a bomb then Lucas can be science nerd enough. Or Merge his character with Karen. She could secretly be a science nerd, it would add nuance to her character and add to the social commentary on conformity (her choosing to be a housewife rather than pursuing a career vs her committing to her old interests and thus saving people’s lives).

men need to be androgynous little rock sluts again. hair gel and cheap black nail polish are still sold in stores. chop chop
i wish letterboxd had a feature where you can explain why you chose your top 4
this zartmann character isn't hateable per se, until you realize that his songs are all 2 minutes long and don't have any lyrical depth in them and that he still has 3 million monthly listeners on spotify. 3 million teenagers and 20 somethings giving their attention to an "indie" cosplayer who does not honour the craft of songwriting or the art of pop music. it's the perfect outcome of 2020 tiktok alt kids, it's indie cosplay from temu with no depth that rewards having no attention span or critical thinking skills. it makes you feel bad for the 3 million middle class students who listen to him every month.
why go to the grocery store or to a restaurant when you can just get food delivered why go to the mall when you can get same day shipping on amazon why go to the library when you have kindle why make art when there’s ai why go to the cinema when you can stay at home and watch netflix. we are in a loneliness epidemic btw
the loneliness epidemic was invented by BIG SHIT to sell you more SHIT
knowing i talk and overexplain too much vs the new volume of stranger things being ASS and some of the awful production details and plot points being similar to things happening in my life/circles recently and being afraid that people might assume i would stand behind that thus having the urge to explain everything that is wrong with the new volume of stranger things and with how it was made to 1k+ people i went to school/uni with, old internet friends i havent dmed in years, distant relatives and my entire university theater club on my public instagram story
recently i came out to a room full of people (as nonbinary). multiple times. but i thought will coming out to a room full of people SUCKED. because while i did it so that my theater group knows about my gender identity struggles so they know that i struggle portraying femininity in the female characters i play, and also did it in a leftist student environment in 2025, will doing it in 1987 seems so unrealistic considering the period-typical homophobia?? and then everyone having the same reaction was what pissed me off even more. WHY do they all have the same line of dialogue. hell i don't even want anyone to be homophobic i'm just asking for NUANCE! kali and vickie do not know who he is. murray probably does not gaf. neither does mr CLARKE.
to me, this scene sums up pretty well all the major problems i have with the show in recent seasons:
too many characters. st was always an ensemble show, but in the earlier seasons the number of characters was always reduced to how many characters the writers could properly flesh out and give nuance to within the limits of their production and runtime. Then, they kept adding characters, and everyone who was instroduced around season 3/4 as somewhat of a main character just feels flat. Even some of the characters that were there since the beginning feel like that (*cough* MIKE WHEELER) because they do not have the time and energy to give them any depth.
Nuance. this ties in to #1, but every character used to stand for something, every relationship, be it romantic, familial or platonic used to stand for something and be unique from the others. Now we barely get to see that, and most of the development happens off screen (when did will and max become best friends? i would have loved to have seen that! when did mike start calling joyce by her first name and what was the reason for that? again, why is the important dvelopment happening outside of the actual script?) The only nuance we get is coming from the acting, maybe directing, but the script for the scene (apart from maybe will's monologue) feels like they pulled it out of a tumblr post from 2017.
CARE and SENSITIVITY. the first two seasons, with their slow pacing and focus on emotions rather than action did such a good job at highlighting how different people of different ages and different class backgrounds react to trouble and trauma. Now a lot of the characters feel flat and stereotypical and the dialogue has lost its meaning.
PACING. what made teenage me fall in love with it was how it wasn't just the aesthetics that were inspired by the 80s, but also how the style in which it was shot in a way a lot of television isn't anymore, with, and i know i have already said this, but, a focus on slow, intelligent, horror, consistent metaphors and the humanity of it. the suspense and the balanced amount of characters and subplots left the audience some time to make up their own interpretation, all important details were shown on screen rather than off screen (or in a prequel play unavailable to most of the world outside of two major metropoles in the anglosphere.) Now the pacing is very different, it is fast, the dialogue highlights one-liners and together with the unnessecary amount of main characters it has lost its nuance in order to resemble Disney's Marvel's The Avengers, rather than media of the time period such as Twin Peaks (a show which, even though it was created by a man, also used horror and supernatural elements to portray the evils of the patriarchy but did so WELL and with SENSITIVITY and NUANCE.)

This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
