The two of you had fought earlier. It was stupid and you were being unfair. You knew it. But you had been holding a slight grudge these last few days, to the point that even the smallest thing would have set you off. So no, you didn’t care if you were being petty and immature right now by choosing not to speak to or even look at him.
It had all started with Art dismissing your attempts at being intimate with him. Work had been keeping you both so busy. Most nights, you would stay overtime, and on the nights you happened to be home, Art was tied up with practice and refining his skills. In the last two weeks, seeing each other for more than a few minutes had become a rarity, and sex along with it. When you would get home, he was already in bed asleep. And when you would wake up, he had already left for the day. You had tried several times to see if he was in the mood, but he would always pull away after a few kisses, and then mumble that he was tired.
It was starting to become a problem.
You knew the injury had taken a toll on his confidence, as much as he tries to hide it. And you knew he had to practice really hard if he ever wanted to be at the level he was a few months ago, but you couldn’t help but be upset by his lack of affection towards you. As much as you wanted to be understanding, you found it hard to. You were just as tired as he was, but that didn’t make you be so negligent towards him. If anything, it made you miss him more. You hated work for keeping you from home, and you hated tennis for keeping Art from you.
You longed for your husband.
So when your schedule finally looked like there were possibilities of it clearing up, you planned to surprise him with a homemade meal and hoped that maybe the two of you could finally spend some time together.
It had all been going well. You were able to get out of work early enough to shop for ingredients, cooking the actual food had felt slow and steady instead of messy and rushed, and by the time you knew it, you were done and all that was left was to wait for Art to get home.
When Art finally walked through the door, you had already been waiting for hours. You were starving, but were excited to finally have some time with your husband, just for it to be ruined within seconds.
Art had barely even kissed your head, before mumbling that he had already eaten and just wanted to shower so he could go to bed.
You were crushed.
Of course, it wasn’t his fault—how was he supposed to know that you were waiting on him with dinner already made? That didn’t stop your eyes from glossing over and you from gently pushing him away though.
At the sight of your teary eyes, he had immediately sighed and apologized, but the damage was already done. The second the first tear fell, the other ones came quickly.
Art tried pulling you into him as a way of comforting you, despite not understanding why you were so upset, but you were already rushing off to your shared room.
He had followed after you, but didn’t try getting a conversation out of you. He knew better than that.
The two of you have been together for years and have known each other for even longer. He knows just when to push and pull, and he knows when to let you be.
So instead of trying to get you to tell him off and then let him fix it, he decided to take a long shower and come out once you had calmed down.
While he was gone, you returned to the kitchen and ate in silence while letting yourself softly cry it out. Truly, it wasn’t him or the fact that he ate dinner out, that made you so angry. Maybe it was because all your hard work had gone to waste?
Or maybe it was that you felt neglected by him—not just now, but in the last couple of weeks—even if you knew that wasn’t his intention.
He had just finished getting ready for bed, after his shower, and was now standing at the doorway of the bathroom.
He watches as you stare down at your nails and pick at the skin around them. You seemed much more relaxed than earlier, but he could tell you were still bothered.
He softly interrupts the silence. “Are you still upset with me?”
Your silence is enough of an answer.
He sighs and leans against the doorframe, looking down at the wedding band on his ring finger as he toys with it.
“I’m trying to understand what it is that I did wrong…” he looks up at your slumped form and calls your name. It comes out quietly with a pleading tone. “Will you please look at me?”
You swallow the lump in your throat and finally turn to look at him from where you’re sitting on the bed.
“Come on, honey.” He slowly walks over to the edge of the bed and bends over it so he’s looking up at you.
His hand reaches to caress your exposed thigh. “I’ve already apologized. What more do you want from me? Do you want me to sleep on the couch? To let you yell at me? Whatever you need from me I’ll do it.”
You see the tired yet worried look on his face and can’t help but feel the slightest bit of guilt gnaw at you.
He’s probably exhausted, and you’re not making things easier. Maybe you’re being childish?
You don’t even get a word out, before he’s holding himself up to kiss your cheek. “Punish me.”
Your eyebrows furrow in confusion. “What—”
He cuts you off with a kiss to your lips, as he shifts onto the bed.
“Tell me off,” he mumbles against your lips.
He presses soft kisses down from your jaw to your neck while muttering against your skin, “tell me how bad of a husband I’ve been for not taking care of my beautiful wife.”
Your breath slightly hitches at the feeling of his hand rubbing your inner thigh under your satin nightgown.
He brushes his nose against your hair. “That’s what this is about, right? That’s what’s got my sweet girl so pissed at me?”
You stay silent and he presses a kiss to your temple, before burying his head into your neck and whispering, “I’m sorry, baby.”
He pulls away from your neck to kiss your lips one last time. He then kisses your shoulder, and you watch as he makes his way down your arm, littering it with kisses until he reaches your hand.
You wait as he slowly lowers himself down and looks up at you.
“I love you.” He kisses the knuckle right below your wedding ring.
“So much,” he whispers with another kiss to your knuckle.
His hands move to your knees and he presses a gentle kiss to your thigh. “Let me show you how sorry I am, yeah?”
He looks up at you for permission and you nod.
“I’ll be good for you… always want to be good for you,” he mumbles against the plush skin of your thighs while his hands push the fabric of your nightgown further up, exposing the lacy material underneath.
You lean back, supporting your weight with your hands and taking in the sight of Art looking up at you with devotion shining in his eyes.
He presses a soft kiss to your hip as he hooks his fingers under the waistband of your underwear and slowly pulls them off. “So pretty.”
His hand slowly drags up your leg and stops at your hip while he leaves wet kisses at your inner thigh until reaching your core.
