Totally normal for a legitimate for-profit company to refuse to reclaim or stop running their products even after they're no longer being paid to do so. I'm sure it's very normal to just keep running your service for free when your contract's been terminated. Hi this reminds me of the skyrim quest I always think about constantly.

It happens during the whole vampire questline. It's not related to vampires. I may misremember details so forgive me for that. But you have to go through old dwemer ruins and you meet the last living snow elf in Skyrim. You know, the snow elves. Who were enslaved by the dwemer and went blind and feral and still live in the ruins long after the dwemer are gone. The falmer is what they're called now. Here's the last one who's in their original form.

And oh hey, to get to where you need to go you have to take a path that's an old snow elf coming of age rite of passage. And he's going to take you through it and you're going to learn about this dead culture, this culture that was killed.

And now you've got what you came for and there's one way out. Now that you've learned what the falmer used to be, where they came from, what was lost because of the dwemer enslaving them, you have to go through a falmer village.

It's a narrow canyon lined with huts. There's no way to avoid it, in order to get through you have to kill them. They attack you because that's what they do to people invading their territory. You're invading their village. You have to kill them or they'll kill you. It's the only way out. You feel terrible.

If you stop to loot one of the huts on your way out you'll find a book full of unreadable text. Take it to the winterhold college and give it to the librarian and he'll tell you that it's a remarkable find because it's evidence that falmer have retained intelligence. They're not just mindless feral monsters. They have this book, they've kept this book even though they can't see. They have a culture. Maybe they still remember what happened to them. Maybe that's why they're so mad.

You just killed so many of them. You're going to have to kill many more.

To elaborate further on this aspect of the province Skyrim, from the video game Skyrim that has absolutely no messages... the game is set against a backdrop of a civil war that on the surface seems at first to be built on the idea of the native people of a land rebelling against foreign imperial rule, which has outlawed their traditional religious practices. The Nords who support Ulfric Stormcloak's rebellion call themselves "the true sons and daughters of Skyrim," and say that "Skyrim is for the Nords," and wish to free the province of Skyrim from the influence of the encroaching Cyrodiillic Empire and Thalmor Dominion.

And yet, while you're learning more about Skyrim and it's history, you find out that the Nords aren't native to Skyrim at all, but came to Skyrim from the land of Atmora long ago. They sought to settle Skyrim, and the resulting conflict with the native Snow Elves rose to the point of near-genocide - to the point where the much-reduced Snow Elves were only found in isolated and well-protected areas. Desperate, the Snow Elves had begged the deep elves, the Dwemer for help. The Dwemer saved them from their dire circumstances, yes, but also blinded and enslaved them in their deep mines and caves and over time they were changed to the point of being unrecognizable as the elves they were, like goblins in the dark.

While the Stormcloaks and the Empire fight over the Skyrim-that-is, the last remaining Snow Elf holds the lone memory of Snow Elf culture and history as it once was, and still holds out hope of establishing communication and exchange with his distant kin, so long twisted by betrayal and removed from their origins.

But Skyrim is just a fun game that has no messages.

Anyway, when I was in college I was constantly going to marches and protests against canadian and saudi mining projects in the Santurbán páramo, one of the most important ecosystems in Colombia in terms of biodiversity, and the source of drinking water of 30+ municipalities in my state, including the city I live in. Ultimately these mining proposals lost their license due to environmental regulations.

But now that our new far-right president elect is looking to suck up to imperial core powers once again, canadian mining corporation Aris mining is interested in re-starting mining projects in Santurbán. Which, would inevitably give cyanide poisoning not only to my city's drinking water, but 30+ other municipalities and indigenous communities.
