new social blunder to report on. made some friends on overwatch and was invited to a discord server. someone asked me my pronouns and i panicked. said 'uhm im in a weird spot rn so i use any... but they/them if thats easier.' why did i say that? i dont use they/them pronouns. and in what world are they/them pronouns easier? was so disheartened by my own answer that when someone new joined the discord call and asked for my pronouns i just said 'whatever man' and he said '.... alright.'

Idk if I should even be telling you this and you don't have to respond but I've been following IWBYD for a long time now and the chapters where Lae'zel is going through it always fuck me up emotionally and I guess it's because I relate to her strongly in some ways. I guess I just keep (re)reading until I can fix myself lol. But I wanted to thank you for writing a character that reflects this part of me that I don't see often in media.

Oh also the sex scenes and the way you write Shadowheart is super hot thank you for the food

when i wrote those chapters i was in an extremely difficult living situation that tanked my well-being, and i genuinely couldn't bear the thought of re-reading any of what i had written, let alone publishing it. i spent a month on a friend's couch in another state and, in that time, realized that i needed to be able to address those feelings and start working towards a future i could enjoy and start being vulnerable where people could see it.

i hope things get better for you, friend <3 i'm glad dog fic lae'zel resonates with so many people. i hope it is as comforting to you to know you're not alone in feeling this way as it is to me when i get messages like these.

Between IWBYD and your new fic I'm so curious about what research you do to develop and portray your characters' relationships with religion. They seem complicated and authentic! Would love to hear your process and thank you for the meals

for dog fic, most of the portrayals of religion arent rooted in any concrete research or readings. they're modelled off of real-world experiences, discussions with friends and general ruminations on the impact of religion on a queer upbringing. i think it's borderline impossible to write shadowheart or lae'zel without giving them religious trauma.

treasure in heaven on the other hand has taken a lot of research. i've been working on it for eight months and i still seem to always have a chrome window with 25+ tabs open of references. it's a lot of googling and fact checking and putting my head in my hands.

im not a student anymore so i dont have access to any reliable academic databases, so trying to find information really feels like scrounging for scraps. i read 'immodest acts: the life of a lesbian nun in renaissance italy' by judith c. brown, and i just checked out 'the nuns of sant'ambrogio: the true story of a convent in scandal' from my local library. i also read 'matrix' by lauren groff at a friend's recommendation which, even though it is fiction and takes place 900 years prior, is very well researched and had a strong influence on the way i portray the abbey.
