Organize Your Life - Meal Prep Edition
Some of my goals for this school year involve saving money and maintaining my health and fitness levels. To accomplish this I am venturing into the amazing world of food prepping! I am going to share with you a few things that have helped me start this daunting journey, as well as how to make these awesome oatmeal to-go jars!
Assess your goals. Knowing what you want to accomplish out of meal prepping will help as you are deciding what to make, how much to make, and how often to make it. For example, I have a history of running out of time in the evening and/or morning to make myself breakfast and lunch during the week. This causes me to choose less healthy options and spend a lot more money on eating out throughout the day. I would like to avoid this by designating one specific time to do most of my food prepping.
Make a plan. Do you want to prep every single meal 7 days a week? Do you want to focus on lunches only? What day(s) will you cook on? Your goal assessment will help with planning your meal prep. School day lunches are the thing that I tend to forget the most so that is what I cook when I am home on Sunday morning - I make 5 meals, keeping 2 in the fridge for Monday and Tuesday, and freezing 3 for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. In addition to cooking my weakly lunches, I also keep backup breakfast options that are easy to make and can be stored for long periods of time (like oatmeal jars and frozen fruit bags for smoothies).
Write a list - KEEP IT SIMPLE. Write a list before you go shopping so you don’t forget anything and you don’t end up with more than you need. For lunch meals I usually get one protein (chicken, turkey, tofu, fish), one carb (quinoa, brown rice, sweet potatoes), one veggie (asparagus, zucchini, kale, spinach), and whatever spices/condiments I will be using... Keeping it simple like this will make your cooking process much smoother.
Streamline your cooking. First of all you need to make sure you have the right cooking supplies, are your pots and pans big enough? Do you have enough storage containers for the number of meals you want? Once you are ready to start cooking you can streamline the process by starting with the food that takes longest to cook, using your oven for more than one thing at once, and having your food storage containers set up and ready to go assembly-line style.
Store your food safely. After your food is made make sure you store it safely so it will not go bad before you eat it. If you are eating it within a day or two it will be fine in a sealed container in the fridge. If you are cooking for longer periods of time you can freeze foods until you are ready for them!
Oatmeal To-Go Jars
These jars are a great back-up breakfast that can be stored for long periods of time without going bad and take little to no prep work once they are made.
You will need:
Jars
Quick oats
Chia seeds (optional)
Sweetener (optional - I use Truvia)
Dried fruits
Dried nuts
First fill your jar half full with quick oats, they will expand so leave quite a bit of space. Next add a few teaspoons of chia seeds, and sweetener to taste (I only used half a teaspoon of Truvia). Top with dried fruits and nuts - I made one jar with banana chips and blueberries, and another with a tropical fruit blend and slivered almonds. If you seal and store in a cool, dark cupboard these jars will last up to 4 months!
When you are ready to eat either add some milk (I like using almond milk) and leave in the fridge overnight, OR add some hot water and let sit for just a few minutes!

Organize Your Life - Note Taking Edition
Hi friends! So with the school year approaching I have been looking for some new tips and tricks for writing and organizing my class materials. I have compiled a master note-taking system using videos I’ve seen on Youtube, tips I’ve gotten from friends, and techniques that I’ve used in the past. This system works great for me because, like everyone, I do a lot of things (school, work, volunteer..) and don’t have a lot of time. I find this to be the fastest way to take notes in class, effectively study from them, and keep them together so nothing is forgotten or misplaced. So let’s jump right in!...
Keep your tools handy. I have a pencil pouch that I carry with me in my school bag, but I still like to keep a few items stored in my binder for quick access just in case. I store a pen, a book of sticky notes and tabs, a small calculator, binder clips, and a 3-whole punch ruler in the front section of my binder.
Organize and store your notes and handouts. Having everything organized in one place will help you stay on track and make sure you don’t lose anything. I use dividers to split up my binder into 5 sections for my 5 classes, and then sticky tabs to sub-divide each class into useable sections (ex: class notes, lab notes, readings, and assignments). These sub-divisions change depending on the class and are easy to move around or add to throughout the term if I need.
Write your notes on your laptop. Now I realize this goes against what most people say about taking notes in class but hear me out. For me, writing notes on my laptop is the most efficient way to combine the information in the prof’s slides with the extra bits of information that is discussed in class. That way, when your class is over you have everything in one place. No need to go back and review your slides at all because everything is in your notes package. BUT, if you do happen to miss something or can’t keep up with the information, you can still go back to the slides after class and input what you missed without having to re-write or have super messy notes.
Print and review your notes within 24 hours. Now here’s why my laptop note taking technique works so well for me. I am still a very paper-and-pen kind of person so printing my notes really helps me study. After each class I print the notes for that day and review them (use a small font and single spacing to condense and save paper/ink). I use a highlighter to highlight the most important information for that day and a pencil to write in extra things that come to mind. Use one highlighter color for this throughout all of your classes, I use yellow for this step (you will see the reasoning behind this in the final step). Once your notes are printed and reviewed you can store them in the appropriate section of your binder for future reference.
Use your notes for exam prep. This saves me so much time I can’t even explain, but it is also highly effective. First I staple together all of the notes that pertain to an upcoming test I am studying for, then I go through the package and use sticky notes to write sample questions for myself. Don’t hold back here, write questions for everything. Every list, every important piece of information, everything. I put the sticky note on the page that has the answer and I highlight the answer in a different color than I did in the previous step (I usually use pink, because why not). Once you are done, you have an extremely thorough package of notes that you can use to quiz yourself, or your classmates!
I hope this was helpful for you guys, please like this post if you want to see more on how I organize my life, and how you can organize yours! <3 Vanessa
4 Ways I Get Ready for School Early:
So I like to prepare for everything way earlier than necessary, this gives me lots of time to try out new ideas and decide what’s going to work for me. It also gives me opportunity to realize if I’ve forgotten something important. Here’s an overview of the things I put together before the term starts:
Decide how to organize your class materials. Some people like notebooks, or folders. Some like doing everything on the computer. I like binders. I use one binder for absolutely everything I have. That way if I’m in a rush to get out the door I can just grab the one book and go. No worries about forgetting a set of notes I wanted to look at, or a paper that is due. It does mean sacrificing quite a bit of space in my backpack but everything is in one spot.
Get a cute planner. I use my planner to track everything I do during the school year. This keeps me on top of my assignments, when I have to study, and when I’ve set aside time for myself. The first thing I do when I get my planner is put in my school’s general important dates (when tuition is due, when the exam period is, when the university is closed). The second thing I do is create a color coding system and acronyms for each of my classes. When I get my class syllabus I will go through and input my class-specific important dates (exams, big assignments, presentations...).
Find your textbooks. I like to find my textbooks as early as possible so that I can get the best deal and have time for them to ship to me before class starts if I’m ordering online. My school doesn’t post my textbooks until August, so I’m still waiting to find out what I need.
Set term goals. One of the most important aspects of planning for an upcoming school year is set some goals for the term. I’ve stuck mine in my planner so I always have a reminder. These are things that have worked for me in the past, and also things that I struggle with and want to get better at. I find that writing down my goals makes them more real, and keeps me motivated.
Thanks for checking in with me, I hope this helps you get started. Like this post if you want to see a more in-depth explanation of how I write and organize my class notes and assignments. <3 <3 <3
I have been neglecting tumblr ever since last semester ended, but now it's time to organize my life! More posts to come about my summertime fitness/nutrition, and how I'll be preparing for school in the fall. Today I got this super awesome agenda and pencil case from Chapter's. How cute?!

Love me some olive green!
Thank-you sakuranbobunny for these awesome sticky notes! I use them all of the time <3
Changing up the way I write my notes and basing the format on some pretty notes I saw on tumblr. This is so much more effective and efficient for me personally. Keeps me motivated to study ☺️👍✒️📖
I love this! Columns are such a good idea :)
With my final exams over, I can finally finish a book I've been trying to read all semester! This is a very cool collection about the development of neurosurgery, told through a number of historic neuro cases.
Slow but steady, feeling balanced.
How I Plan my Presentations in 4 Easy Steps:
1. Prioritize - First I decide what sections I want to cover in my presentation. These should be specific enough that you will not be driven off topic when researching or presenting. 2. Research - Second, I gather all of my sources on my desk (all hard and electronic copies). I don’t read these articles in depth before compiling them, I choose the ones that look like they will be the most useful/interesting. 3. Notes - Then I make my way through each section I have selected, taking important information from all of my sources and combining them into one big messy outline. Make sure to use your own words and include ALL info that might be relevant. 4. Condense - Finally, I take that outline and whittle it down into a comprehensive, organized set of notes that I will use to make my poster/slideshow/presentation notes!
When actually presenting I use my presentation mode (either a poster, slideshow, or activity) as my main source of information, and then keep a small set of notes on flashcards to ensure I don’t forget any key features.
Make sure to use pictures, diagrams, and interactive activities whenever you can to keep it fun and make it memorable :)
Presentation complete, BOOM!
