i’ve talked about this before but like literally the coolest thing to think about is how different our mythology would be if we had different cosmic conditions. binary star system? every single pantheon would have twin sun gods. if they differed or actively changed in apparent size that’d be factored in. multiple moons? you fucking bet astrology would put more of a basis on moon configuration than the stars. saturn-like rings? i’d bet several cultures would assume that was the afterlife or the path to it. how the fuck is this not fascinating
White people can’t have dreads!
They just can’t! This isn’t even an opinion it’s a fact! Look:
Dreads:
Shit white people do:
Like let’s be honest, do those look ANYTHING alike? No? Didn’t think so🤷🏾♀️😂
I know they won’t stop doing this appropriative shit even though it doesn’t compare in any way to the real thing and white people just shouldn’t do it from a moral/ethical viewpoint but they will continue to so here’s the deal.
We’re no longer calling that shit white people do dreads, from now on when white people try (and fail) to imitate dreads they’ll be called matts.
Because it literally looks like they matted their hair together with glue to make grinch fingers sprout out they heads lol.
So one more time
Dreads^^^
Matts^^^
Live it, learn it, love it👌🏾
Thanks for coming to me TED talk
Just to add, it doesn’t “look like” matted hair, white people “dreadlocks” ARE MATTED HAIR. Which is extremely unsanitary and damaging to the hair.
Rt. White “dreads” cant be washed and cant be removed. Our hair DOES NOT do that (and neither did Celtic hair before y'all try to say “b b b but the irish!” that was braids boys). White mats are the result of not washing or maintaining the hair and are extremely damaging. They’re about the polar opposite of actual dreadlocs.
“B b b but the irish!” There were more to the Celtics than the Irish. The Welsh and the Scots have depictions of both dreads and braids in their history. As do many other non-African cultures, for example in Ancient Greece, some of the earliest depictions of dreads date back to 3600 BC, with artwork and references to “snake-like hair.”
Stop telling people what they can and can not do. I’m not ranting at people for wearing Roman Outfits on Halloween, or these “Neo-Pagans” for having gender-specific sects.
I’m an archeologist and I’ve specifically studied hairstyles from around the world. There are zero depictions of Celtic peoples with dreadlocks. There ARE depictions of Celtic peoples with braids and glibbe (the Celtic matted hairstyle which is basically bowl cut with the hair over the forehead longer and that longer forehead hair matted into a single beaver tail mass).
The 3600 bc represententions you are likely referring to are not actually Greek in origin and they don’t represent dreadlocks, they represent coiled curly hair. At that time, Minoans braided and curled their hair, they did not matt it. It wasn’t until ~530 that we see statues that people uneducated on Greek traditions assume are dreadlocks, in part because many of the kouros statues are damaged. More well preserved kouros statues clearly show that the hair is curls, not dreadlocks. This would also be supported by the fact that at the time, Greek men had rituals of combing and oiling their long hair. Also, it’s often believed these kouros statues represent Apollo, which was never described or represented at any point with matted hair.
The “snake like hair” reference was actually written about the Germanic peoples by Romans. At the time, the accepted hairstyle for Roman men was short hair, so the “snakes” is either referring to the Germanic practice of braiding the hair and then encasing it in protective mud for battle, or to the fact that Germanic men at the time had very long hair compared to the Romans. There’s also the additional fact that the ancient Romans are well known for exaggerating or lying about their enemies in war, so it’s important to take their statements with a grain of salt.
Stop spreading misinformation and falsehoods. Stop speaking from ignorance.

CALL OUT POST FOR ORISONI/MALEFICARUM
Due to the inconsistencies in style her style, I had suspicions that Ariel might be tracing. Deciding to look further into it, I came across a stock photo that looks remarkably similar to this piece of hers here:
From then on more and more evidence of her having traced many, if not all pieces of her art began to emerge. Not only has she been tracing various stock photos:
She used one of the stock photos to trace a commission for tumblr user @looktothehorizon
She’s also traced non stock photography
T.v screen caps
And different other people’s artwork, one belonging to tumblr user @elvishness and another who I couldn’t find the source for.
Tracing stock photos is one thing, but to trace another artist’s work, whether it be their photography or drawings is completely unacceptable. To do that and also charge money for it is beyond believable. @orisoni if you’re going to go around policing other people, claiming that they’re copying your art and stealing your ideas, maybe you should learn not to do that yourself?
The thing is, I don’t think any of this person’s art is traced. It does look like they referenced or were inspired by all of the pictures you’ve found, but there are pretty obvious differences between their art and the original pictures that would be hard for someone who was tracing to make. Additionally, the bottom two pictures are poses that aren’t exactly rare in the art world.
Referencing photos is an excellent tool for every artist. I once had an art teacher who told me that you should never draw something unless you have a reference to look at. I don’t really believe that’s necessary, but her point was that there is this culture that’s recently arisen online in which referencing pictures reflects badly on someone’s skill. Every time I reference a picture from sight only, I worry that someone is going to come along and do exactly what you’ve done to this artist. Plenty of artists have taken pose or piece inspiration from stock photos or other artists, and I’m curious as to why you’ve chosen to attack this particular artist for something so common.
Accusing this artist of tracing, especially tracing for a commission, is a serious claim that could damage this artist’s reputation needlessly. All you’ve really done is shown that they possibly referenced these pictures. You cannot prove that they traced them (I’m inclined to believe they didn’t) and it’s not really your place to police their references or sic the Internet Mob™ on them for a crime (?) that you’re not even sure that they committed. Finally, whether or not they traced the commission is absolutely none of your business, and is between the artist and the person who commissioned them.
I BET THEY TRACED THAT AMAZING COLORING TOO RIGHT
This witchhunt is actually disgusting-
I agree with cellartater on this one. Referencing poses is a key things that many artists do to make sure their work is accurate. It also helps further the ability of an artist. I often look up pose reference to make rough base poses from to practice my art flow. Honestly, trying to flame an artist who is using reference for POSES alone and claiming they are tracing everything is just…
Every artist is guilty of tracing poses to start off before they gain confidence and draw the poses better and easier on their own. Reference is always the starting point.
This isn’t a beginning artist, she has been drawing for 5+ years. No one once said that artists were not allowed to reference. Every artist does it. That’s not the problem here. The problem is tracing/heavily referencing something and then not giving credit to who you’re referencing from, denying claims of tracing/heavily editing, and blocking or ignoring anyone who tries to discuss the matter with you. Referencing how an artist usually does would not result in the art being able to line up almost identically with the reference. All I’m asking is to not lie and give credit to those who deserve it.
Here’s the thing though. Artists are ALWAYS learning how to better themselves. Five plus years drawing is still pretty small experience considering most artists have spent almost their lifetimes drawing. That’s not even considering how fast an artist can pick up anatomy and shading naturally without having to use references. And even if they are super talented, most artists will continue to use them. I’ve been drawing for 30+ years and rely on looking to photos for references to this day. I had to especially chuckle when you mentioned one of the pictures closely lined up to the hands. OF COURSE it does. Hands are the freaking devil!
I can tell you that artists reference things differently too. Some trace, some simply eyeball it. The link you put up is simply one way an artist can reference.
The artist you talk about in your initial post simply used photos as references for for her fanart. If she had simply redrawn the same people in those pictures or used the same subjects in the other art shown, but she’s clearly changed the subjects at hand and used a different art style to call these pictures her own.
Anyway, a great example of one artist ripping off another is the below gif. The below example is art theft. The stuff you’ve posted isn’t.
Just because she adds things to the drawing and fixes things her own way to make it to her liking doesn’t mean it’s a new art piece or it hasn’t been traced. She’s STILL using theses images as a base and not simply a reference. Like I mentioned above, all I’m asking is to be honest and give credit where it’s due.
Posts like these honestly absolutely terrify me.
I use references. A lot. I’m still uncomfortable with proportions in my less-cartoony style and using those references is how I improve. Every reference I use is either from free stock, stock I’ve paid to use (which is NOT as expensive as OP makes it out to be), pose reference libraries, or other sources such as pornography (live action).
But you know what? That’s why I’m so open about using them. Hell, on my commission page I openly offer slight discounts if someone comes to me with a good free stock reference for a piece they want done.
Posts like these demonize artists for trying to use every resource available to them in an attempt to improve their craft. Posts like these try to ruin artists’ reputation for no obvious gain. They are malicious. And it scares me that people think these callouts are okay.
You know what else pisses me off? This line right here:
Due to the inconsistencies in style her style, I had suspicions that Ariel might be tracing.
People change the way they draw all the time, and it’s not always some gradual improvement. Using my own stuff as an example? I have two very, VERY different styles. Both of which are constantly shifting and evolving. I’ll figure out a new way of drawing eyes that I like, or some such thing, and it’ll be night and day from piece to piece.
Saying “inconsistencies” in the style prompted you to spend what must have been HOURS hunting down the references used for each of these images is an excuse. If it makes you feel better, all power to you. But what this post comes down to is this: The OP wanted to hurt this artist. I don’t know why, and quite frankly I don’t care.
I hope whatever misplaced sense of justice or victory they got from it was worth it, because this shit doesn’t fly in the artist community.
OP: You will be proven wrong time and time again, and each time you will circle back with the same “I’m right you’re wrong lalala” logic.
Referencing is not art theft.
Whatever crusade you were trying to start against this artist has failed.
Sit down while you still have some dignity left.
Reblogging this because there is a very important lesson to be learned from the reblogs that came up in Discord today.
Like seriously the fact they even included the stock image ones is pretty damn weird. They’re stocknimages, most of them are available for use so its not art theft.
Also they diverge pretty quickly so its clearly not traced and being used for proportions and poses
The more I look at this, the more it starts to move.

Map of Native American etymologies for “horse”. There were no horses in the Americas before the colonists arrived. Native Americans quickly developed new words for this strange animal, often associating them with dogs, their one other domestic animal before contact with Europe.

Then they got an idea! An awful idea! THE BRANDS GOT A WONDERFUL, AWFUL IDEA! All the marketers thought, “Why should tickets suffice? With the Grinch selling knick-knacks, why, we’ll be paid twice!”
Forget all the morals! There’s cash to be made. From frosting to forklifts to Grinch Gatorade! Just slap his face on there and tint it with green And prepare for profits, yes, profits obscene!
From a seasonal, festival holiday grump, The Grinch had been played for a capital chump. “No more! Won’t you forget these trinkets?” he pleads. “Christmas isn’t junk! It’s your bonds and your deeds.”
For a moment, they paused. Was there more to this day Than products and placements and big bonus pay? The PR men sniffed and they shrugged and they sighed. Then they threw him some cash and they went back inside.

Make a conlang where the only way to express 1 is 0.999999…
On the world of Whatever, in the Fuck-if-I-know Desert, live a group of nomadic tribes that share a culture.
In these nomadic tribes’ religious beliefs’ exists the Evil God (or the Haunting Spirit) of Closed Spaces. Everything that is complete or closed belongs to them and can be used by them as they please. A common talisman against evil forces is a wood disk with a notch on one side, or the engraving of an almost-complete circle, but with a little space left on the circumference (usually on one side). This can be enforced or relaxed to the writer’s content.
Doors are left ajar; this leads to a communal style of living, which is manageable for small groups, but chaotic for large groups, so there are rules in place that mandates tribes to have some of the population split off in a new tribe when they reach a certain population number. This is also what makes the tribes keep the nomadic lifestyle.
Marriage is also usually done with members of other tribes, and inter-tribe marriage is considered taboo. This is both because, with the communal lifestyle, inter-tribe relationships are bound to cause awkwardness through the whole tribe, and tensions are probable to surface, destroying the tribe’s unity, and also to keep the gene pool varied. (inspired by Conlangery’s podcast on kinship terms, and the Australian “skin” systems mentioned in there)
Multiples of 5 are considered to be cursed, specially 5 itself and 25 (both 5 and 25 called the Evil’s Numbers); some also consider even numbers to be evil’s minions, although this is not widespread. Prime numbers, specially from 2 digits upwards, are considered lucky numbers.
Many times, to reference full, closed or completed things, the concept of “almost” is used to circumnavigate and avoid invoking evil forces. Specially popular is the concept of “almost-1″, since that number is THE unit, and a “beacon of completeness” in itself. After the introduction of fractions and their decimal representation to maths and their number system, another common form of saying “almost-1″ is… 0.9 periodic.

Bad kerning as a sound change: e.g. /cl/ → /d/, /vv/ → /w/, or, more spectacularly, /rri/ → /m/ (the origin of the infamous “hurrianist–humanist” merger).
Have a plague that wipes out the conculture, or a dictator or invading Empire that bans learning the conlang (in-world natlang) just for enough generations that all good speakers are dead. Make the script to lack spaces, and to join characters. This is not a problem because speakers know how a word is pronounced… Except that now they’re all dead.
Now have the conculture try to revive the laguage. Either the Empire became more lax, they got independence, the dictator died off, or the plague survivors were all (or mostly) little kids who never got to learn to difference words through pronunciation. They can piece the linguistics easily together (either through written ex-illegal texts in the Empire language that their great-grandparents wrote to not let the language die, or the kids had already learned some basic grammar), but homographs are quite confusing. After some time and heavy inconsistency between new speakers, homographs are all inevitably merged.
In an alternate universe, language holds magical power. However, the more speakers there are for that language, the less powerful the magic becomes, making languages like English nearly powerless. You are the last speaker of a dying language.
Native Americans are even more integral to both world wars
Nazi, Soviet, etc persecution of Esperanto speakers becomes justified, if inherently self-limiting
Development of creoles plays a major role in de-colonization
Conlangers get even weirder
