Hello! My name is Vyuntspakhkite. You can call me Vyunt. My pronouns are it/its/he/him, and otherwise I like masculine terms.

My books are all set in a low fantasy universe, but when it comes to reading, I'm open to most genres- feel free to hit me up with recommendations! Most of the characters I write are LGBTQ+, mentally ill, or both. My stories are mostly dark and gory and deal with heavy topics. I'll do my best to tag everything properly, but I might miss things, if you catch something I didn't add, just reach out and I'll add in the proper tags.

Folie à Deux - planning A prequel to The Burning of Nyazhchau, focusing mostly on Arsioly and Tanka, a guy who's trying to court him. I'll update this with a better summary soon!

The Burning of Nyazhchau - first draft A fantasy military story, centering around a group of soldiers as they fight for independence from the oppressive Kristalyc Empire. Arsioly, Virava, Sibatol, and Visralion, who are part of the same rebel fireteam, constantly have their worldviews challenged as they realize war isn't what they thought. The Proper Way to Break a Man - plotting A story about a prophet and queen called Rasiel, and her divinely appointed servants. I don't have a good summary to put here but I'll add one when I think of it, for now I'll just leave it with the intro linked. First lines study

I know i haven't posted in a while and i might not be back to consistently posting for uhhhh idk i can't make an estimate. But I'm bored today and trying to come up with something to do that's productive, so I'm gonna work on studying some first lines.

Basically what I'm gonna do here is I've picked a few random books off my shelves, and I'm just going to sit down and figure out what the author chose to do with the first line. Do I like it, do I not like it, why do i feel that way, etc.. So if any of yall are interested in that, keep reading! feel free to add your own thoughts too.

The Giver (Lois Lowry)

"It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened."

This is a pretty simple one, but I like it. I think it works for pretty obvious reasons. It immediately gives the reader a few questions; What is Jonas frightened of, and what does it have to do with it almost being December? I also like that it gives just a little bit of setting, letting us know it's probably wintertime.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (Suzanne Collins)

"Coriolanus released the fistful of cabbage into the pot of boiling water and swore that one day it would never pass his lips again."

I've actually never read this book before, but maybe that's a good thing for this exercise. I like this line because it's immediately got a conflict. Coriolanus doesn't want to be eating cabbage. The way it's worded also lets us know that he probably has to eat this a lot. Cabbage is a food i see a lot used as like a poverty food, smth you eat when it's the best you can afford. I also feel like the word choices like "fistful" and "swore" give the sense that he's a little pissed off, so some characterization immediately. He's got conviction but is also probably in a tricky situation if he hates this food so much but has to keep eating it. I've also noticed that both opening lines so far use the main character's name. I wonder if that'll be a common theme in these?

The Outsiders (S.E. Hinton)

"When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home."

This line doesn't have the main character's name, but I also think it'd be pretty difficult to do that with a first person narrative. It does still have a proper name in it, Paul Newman. I think this helps because it's a real person and gives an idea of the setting, this character just came out from the movie theater from seeing a movie that probably had Paul Newman in it and he cares about the actor himself more than whatever character he played. I also like the "ride home" bit since it lets the reader know what this character's current goal is, and that there's probably going to be some conflict around getting that ride. The sensory detail of moving from a dark space to a bright one is nice too.

Invisible man (Ralph Ellison)

"I am an invisible man."

This is a short one, and I'm not too big of a fan of it. It kind of accomplishes the same thing the title does: lets the reader know this story is about an invisible man, and makes them wonder if that's literal or metaphorical. I think I would have maybe preferred something different, again just because this sentence does the same thing as the title.

The Grapes of Wrath (John Steinbeck)

"To the red country and part of the gray country of Oklahoma, the last rains came gently, and they did not cut the scarred earth."

This one has a lot of setting information and I actually quite like it. We're in Oklahoma and based on "last rains", there's about to be a drought. I'm also wondering what the red country vs the gray country is, but that might just be knowledge i don't have an not an intentional question. I like that it kind of de-dramatizes the situation, because "last rains" feels really final and dangerous, but the rain is described as gentle. It's a contrast that personally I like.

That's it for now! I was going to do more but got tired lol. I don't think I did anything crazy or unique here, this was mostly just for fun. I've watched some youtube videos about making opening lines, but I think it helps me to try and study things myself and figure out the rules independently from someone telling me what their own conclusions were.

This is a FIXABLE problem, by the way!

Pick a topic you like, and that's what you're going to read about. Set a minimum word count, and read until you get to it. Start small. Smart easy. First try, it might actually be agonizing.

That's it for the day. Just hit the word count.

Next day, read to the word count again. Read something new! It will be easier today.

And easier the next.

And you will naturally find yourself extending how much you read per day.

The answer to 'how are they going to function' is, and I say this as someone whose mom was a social worker in Appalachia for 20 years: they're going to get scammed. They're going to be victims of fraud, scams, and exploitation, due to their low literacy making them easier targets for others. And then they're going to be unable to read and write well enough to advocate for themselves in a court of law or fight back in any meaningful way.

"I ain't reading that" becomes "I can't read that" which becomes "I didn't read before I signed it because the guy telling me to was convincing and now I don't have anything".

On top of being scammed, receiving accurate medical treatment relies on you knowing how to do your own research, and too many doctors take illiterate patients less seriously.

If you become a victim of a crime or are accused of a crime, you need to be able to read the papers a cop or lawyer puts in front of you. They can happily take advantage of your ignorance if you give them a chance.

This list goes on! Landlords, real estate agents, accountants, car mechanics, bankers, phone companies, customer service, contractors, childcare workers, e.g. any other human you rely on just to live your life will expect you to be literate and capable of making smart decisions. It is not their job to supplement your ignorance. It is not any well-meaning individual's job to make sure you paid attention in the same classes they did. And most of them know this and will not wait for you to figure things out.

It won't be a scam, it will just be business.

I’ll be real I have absolutely no idea how many draft I have 😭 just of TBoN? I think Officially/the amount of saved drafts I have in my current file for the story, 6. But considering that the origin of this idea goes back uhhh, at least a couple years, and all the different iterations of this story, definitely up into the hundreds.

Maybe next time I start a project I’ll keep track of how many drafts I go through, that’d be pretty interesting :3
