I was just thinking about how weird it is that tst uses voice-over narration at the beginning and end, how unprecedented it was in the show and what a weird choice to introduce it for the first time in series 4 and then I realised it's not unprecedented. we have one more episode that starts with a voice-over. the abominable bride. and since John was narrating inside Sherlock's head, it makes perfect sense for sherlock to narrate inside John's
also why did they wait for sherlocks "death" to introduce Mary when in acd canon john marries her way before the final problem? it's almost as if they thought giving John a love interest with sherlock still in the picture would not be credible mmmhh
the fact that sherlock has said that he doesn't intend to marry and that he'll never make another vow is a clear trope that he will do both. to john. how anyone fails to see this is beyond me
reminder that it is canon that sherlock was using a rum bottle for an experiment and went through the thought process of ‘oh no, if john somehow came into contact with/ingested this it would hurt him :( and since I can’t even stand the thought of that or the idea of something bad happening to John, specifically on my account, and since there is even the SLIGHTEST possibility that john might see this and for some reason - by accident or otherwise - come into contact with/ingest this in any way shape or form, I must put a LARGE sticky note taped to the glass just to make sure he doesn’t. just to be safe. better safe john then sorry.’

When did they think it was a good idea for it to become ‘Mary’ versus ‘Sherlock’?

Somewhere, maybe on that bus during s3 filming, when the epiphanies started to occur and they obviously changed direction in how they were going to write s4 and 5, the idea sparked that Mary should be the main feature of the story. It could have been sparked by Amanda’s acting? But you know, they had Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch already pulling all the stops out, and with due respect to the competency of Amanda, I just don’t think she’s in their league. Was it the ‘Moffat can’t write women/is a misogynist’ reputation that is rampant out there? Could be, as Steven’s ego fights for dominance even over his own writing projects. It may have been a long felt sorrow for the canon character of poor wifey Mary, villainized for over a century because she came in between Holmes and Watson. A noble try to right the wrong and fix it. Nah….not these two writers on that particular issue, they just keep adding even worse female tropes as is evident in Eurus. So what the fuck went on? Because they did do this.
Mary the narrator, Mary the author God of the action and character development via DVD, ‘Mary’ the name it all came down to at the end [see the video linked above] Mary who could be all things; mother, wife, girlfriend, assassin, friend, liar, catlover, the most brilliant person in the room….Mary who could become Sherlock. Mary who transplanted Sherlock as wife to John, even in canon she only did that in name never reality. Mary who could out detective, out think and out manipulate Sherlock. Mary the Great Detective/Assassin/Woman [sorry Irene, she beat you]
They fucking killed their own show, their chance at history making television, their LGBTQ landmark, for….MARY?
That video is cringe worthy. And so lame. I really don’t know how they thought it would be a good idea to make the show about Mary. And funny thing some people even accept it. And when the other day I posted about the lack of johntent. Someone replied to my post with “Because the show is called sherlock.” So what the fuck is with all the unnecessary mary stuff ?
It’s been Marycentric since TSoT, but I could live with it due to the fact it propelled johnlock. But s4 went all out for Mary, and in the wrong direction….they could have made her the big bad and kicked ass. I always thought they were fixing canon by making Mary be the catalyst to bring John and Sherlock together but I was wrong, she just drove them apart to the point where they were dying they were so traumatised. Now I realise Granada Holmes did the better job; just ignore Mary as a love interest, she was always just a client.
ok but we're all aware sherlock didn't resort to drugs to escape boredom but to block out the bullying and insults that were thrown constantly in his direction bc he started believing he was, indeed, a Freak. i mean Suicidal Tendencies Holmes would definitely do that. thank God for John
they probably also didn’t understand the extent that rewatching s4 would be excruciating for us and preclude us from generating the kind of meta we vitally needed in a timely fashion
have you considered sherlock giving john a quick shy peck on the cheek and making the :> face when john smiles up at him
