For Engage Month Day 6 (Lythos), I wanted to share my nonbinary Alear design. ❤️💙 I love the interpretation of Alear's story as a trans allegory and was curious what a combination of their canon designs would look like (+a couple extra details for fun). there's a reason it doesn't end on the rooftop.

the rooftop has played a number of roles, but it is first and foremost a place of separation. mizuki and rui, the born outcasts, up here. and all the normal people who get friends and joy and acceptance, down there.

the rooftop is always where mizuki goes to be alone, even if other people do end up joining her there. the rooftop is where the bells of parting toll, where mizuki is marked as separate from "regular" girls. it creates a divide between mizuki and ena, between the time before the secret was out and the time after.

but the story ends in the alleyway, a brand new setting that visually echoes the rooftop we're familiar with. barbed wire, concrete, sunset lighting. only difference is, it's on the ground. there is no more above vs. below, weird vs. normal, ostracized vs. accepted. the distance has been closed.
