I think what might help the whole "low engagement in fandom spaces driving creatives out because they don't see the point in sharing anything only to get crickets or critics" is not the shaming tone of "look this is how you get nothing, you entitled shits" that tends to be very pervasive, but rather pointing out how actually rewarding it can be to leave nice comments.
I like to leave very long rambling comments on people's fics and that has actually netted me some very real, genuine friendships and we've become cheerleaders for each other. My friend has a D&D Podcast that she doesn't get ANY sort of engagement out of, so I started listening to it at work and livereacting the things I enjoy about it and showing her my investment and it makes her very happy and it makes me happy that she's happy.
Being nice to people... is actually a good enough reason to do things, shockingly enough. You don't have to do it. No one should shame you for not doing it. But it doesn't actually cost anything to make other people happy, especially if they created something that made you happy.
I'm going to take this away from fic writing for a second and talk about community in general.
Humans are social animals. We crave connection and community, and one of the constant complaints about modern society is how isolating it is.
But I look back on how my parents built a community every time we moved - and as an air force brat we moved more than most.
You want neighbors you can borrow a cup of sugar from? Hang out and watch a lunar eclipse with your entire street block?
Someone, anyone - and that person can be you - needs to do something to get that ball rolling. Make cookies and bring a plate to your neighbor, just to say hi. Wave when you see them outside. Offer to help shovel their snow - or just go ahead and do it for them (my neighbor sometimes does this for me).
You get the community you put the effort into building.
Let me say that again, with emphasis.
You get the community you put the effort into building.
And if you nope out of that, you are left passively accepting whatever community other people put the effort into building.
Whether we are talking irl or online, it's true.
To bring this back to fic comments - it's an easy way to build your fandom community, and can even lead to friendships and fandom based chat groups.
You don't have to engage, ofc. And different people have different comfort levels, so if it's really not something you are comfortable doing I won't judge.
Just be aware that that's the type of community you are helping build.
LCF is like, maybe the real farm was the friends we made along the way: two cats, a dragon, more or less ten wolf children, other dragon, other dragon, other dragon, other dragon, whales, a Choi Han, a ghost dragon, half a dragon—
baby and grandpa
speaking of colours. these are the days of the week. and we're all agreed on that
it is the sun. it's the setting sun. the sunset of the week. saturday is midday. this is true and also obvious
sorry??? Sunday is the sunset…what??? no??? Sunday is the sunRISE excuse u. Friday evening is the sunset
Friday is Freyja's day so it is associated with a chariot pulled by cats.
It's unbelievable how the God of Despair tried to break Cale mentally through a test that forced him to relive one of his worst traumas, only for Cale to turn him into a kind of extremely dangerous, stressful, and cruel exposure therapy that helped him resolve one of his greatest failures, alleviating a burden he'd carried for over a decade. And during the trials of the Temple of the Sealed God, this was repeated in the trial of sadness, where Cale was able to relive another moment from his past and resolve his regrets. He literally thanked the God of Despair more than once for the opportunities to confront his past and resolve what was left unfinished.
The level of deception this man has achieved transcends most gods. Throw him into mental torture, and Cale will turn it into a therapy session.
Writing prompt:
A time traveler comes back in time to stop and apocalypse except...
They fail. Miserably. Except they managed to tell some gang of thieving kids enough of what's coming that this little group of criminals has to step up to save the day.
Honestly, the funniest thing about thinking about TCF is realising how pissed off the White Star and Arm must have been about Cale and his group consistently beating them. This is made even funnier when you realise that physically Cale and his main crew look like a bunch or teenagers, kids and animals, who for some reason keep outsmarting and beating them. Like, I don't think they'd know Choi Han has actually been alive hundreds of years, and physically, he looks 16. There's two random cats running around, spreading poisoned fog, but TBF I can't remember how long the cats are hidden, Cale himself looks and physically is 18, can't remember Lock's age but I feel like he's also around 15. I imagine Rosalyn is also a similar age but I don't know if / when we get her age. And I just have to wonder how pissed Arm was when they found out they were being bested by a couple of teens and like early 20 year olds. Especially the White Star since he's been planning this for so long and he's being beaten by teens. I wonder if they said "we would've gotten away with it too if it wasn't for those meddling kids, and their cats." Also the fact that Cale and his crew will be everywhere for a few weeks, go completely off the grid, no one hears anything about them, and then suddenly they're back, and, oh, yep, the group's definitely bigger. Hey, wait, weren't they with us before? Like I like to imagine that, as time passed, they tried to stay confident and seem cocky, but were lowkey terrified, because what the fuck? Where does he keep finding these people? What do you mean there's like 7 Dragons on his side? What do you mean he has that many ancient powers? It's been two years. How did he do this so fast? Like, imagine being the White Star, or the God of Despair, or worse, a low ranking Arm member. Like, yes, we're a cult, we follow the White Star, but... do we really have to fight these guys?
I really like the chemistry between ogCale and krsCale! They are so bestie coded.
Everyone had some misunderstanding when they met with krsCale for the 1st time no matter how smart they were (Alberu thought he was a elf). Even his close friends still misunderstand him including himself.
But ogCale was able to understand him perfectly despite just meeting him for the 1st time. It felt like he could read krsCale' mind despite the other having a stoic expression.
He also understood that krsCale is actually very kind despite the rumors of him being a cold blooded person.
Moreover, he didn't say some things out loud knowing that krsCale can get uneasy or feel burdened.
Furthermore, he was the 1st (?) person to support krsCale' dream to live peacefully without any questions and advised krsCale about what to do to not become the count.
Finally, unlike everyone else, he didn't become angry at krsCale for getting hurt. He was shocked, but he could understand krsCale' situation and simply wished him luck.
On the other hand, krsCale who refuses to listen to other people's sad backstory or dislike hearing something troublesome, did both for ogCale.
He attentively listened to ogCale' story despite knowing that it is troublesome. He also said he would like to hear more details. It was so unlike him!
They can understand each other like no one else can.
Cale Henituse/Kim Roksoo is such a nuanced character that you need to read the novel from the beginning at least twice to understand his conviction and the motivations behind his actions. Like why he hates seeing children hurt. Why the first thing he asks someone he just met is "have you eaten?" Why he says he wants to become a slacker. Why he gets himself involved in situations he shouldn't need to despite saying he wants to stay out of it. Why he takes the position of Commander during the war despite initially saying he wanted to stay in a quiet place far away from the war before. Why he is so unfazed by sights of blood and massacre. Why he is so good at strategising. Why he is such a natural at leading. Why he exudes such great aura and charisma even when not using the Dominating Aura. Why he has such good memories of the details mentioned in the novel he read. Why he says he doesn't care when he very clearly does. Every single action that could simply have been dismissed as plot armour for the main character, the author crafted such well thought out plot points to give background to those traits which in turn gave depth to his character. He's such an interesting character to unpack. The more you get to know him it turns out you actually knew so little about him the whole time.
A redraw
Starting on a new manhwa 👀 ~1st fanart
LCF readers at the start of the story when the side characters mistook Cale to be a "good person": pfft, you fools. You couldn't have been more wrong about him. You've all just been scammed. That guy is only using you for his own benefit.
LCF readers a few hundred chapters in: wait- they actually were kinda right?? We were the fools who got scammed into believing whatever he said? Goddamn.
I think we as a fandom need to talk more about cale's lack of reaction to his ancient powers. Like one day one just started speaking in his head and he just was like. okay this is happening now. And over time the number of ancient powers speaking grew. And cale was just like wow ok new family members only in my mind this time.
I think my favorite thing about the TCF novel is that although Cale is a transmigrator he didn’t go from regular person to super smart just because he transmigrated. In a lot of novels you’ll see transmigrators and regressors just suddenly becoming geniuses in everything they do. I like that the author created a back story of why Cale was as smart as he was. And, he had to go through a lot of trial and error and see a lot of things for his plans to work.
I don’t remember where it was in the book but I remember reading that in KRS’s early days at the company with LSH they got beat up after a mission gone wrong. I think the way LSH just laughs the whole ordeal off is just a way that alludes to how Cales plans back then didn’t always work. He had to work on the front lines for a long time before his plans became so intricate and easily switched and replaced for new ones as more obstacles are thrown at him.
Cale is naturally smart, yes, but things like that can only be achieved through experience and I’m glad the author gave Cale the experience before they gave Cale the ability.
Anyway this is just a little quark I saw in the book that I’d thought I’d share with the rest of the fandom.
