Took a break from weaving to make a quilt I envisioned come to life! The front is a trans pride flag featuring foods that are said to be high in testosterone. I've been eating these and more for years as diy hrt, and I wanted to honor these foods through art. perhaps a quilt wasn't the best medium because it was hard to find specific food fabrics but I did my best :)

The back is chaos and I had so much fun with it, it's lumpy and crooked and asymmetrical and so incredibly human

Fabric Star Quilts.

Wally (Walter) Dion is a Canadian artist of Saulteaux ancestry living and working in Upstate New York. Working in a number of media including painting, drawing and sculpture.

Wally explains:

"The first fabric star quilt was made as part of a 2022 residency at Wanuskewin Park. It was my way of reflecting upon prairie tall grass and the reintroduction of bison into the Great Plaines. I wanted to make several transparent quilts and superimpose them; one in front another... a quilt for the microbiome, another for the bison, their manure & hooves, another for the summer fires that scorch the ground and a final quilt for the sweetgrass braid.

I was considering how all of these things worked together for thousands of years to create what is known as the 'prairie tall grass ecosystem'. A vast and fertile expanse of land stretching from the foothills of Alberta to the banks of the Mississippi. I wanted to highlight the invisibility of systems when everything is working well, as it should be.

I started with the green quilt because it is the colour of the sweet grass braid that is exchanged in ceremony and relationship building. I considered the nature and tradition of quilting; impoverished craftspeople using tiny scraps of fabric. I considered the act of offering fabric and adherence to tradition. I thought of a thousand tiny prayers and how that might look; invisible acts of respect and adherence to protocols spanning decades. My thoughts travelled across the land, imagining the trees and rocks collecting these prayers like a bush of cloth, or an etched boulders."

the world has been horrifying recently but i have personally witnessed something that brought me joy

Every year, California’s largest sheep and fiber festival, Lambtown, takes place in Dixon, CA. On the second day of Lambtown, teams of eight compete in a “sheep to shawl” competition, where the teams must start the day with un-spun wool and end the day with a 72” woven shawl. Teams may “warp” a loom ahead of time (where you thread the loom with its foundation of parallel threads), but on the day of competition they must spin their wool into yarn and weave it into a complete shawl.

This year competition was stiff, and very very close, and the winning team finished their shawl with two and a half minutes to spare.

I frequently hear about “needing to keep “politics” out of fiber arts, but art is inherently political.

These were beautiful, masterfully spun, woven, and finished shawls and that in itself is worthy of note.

But watching this team of eight would fight for hours, and pour their love for their community into their art was deeply moving and I am still reveling in the opportunity to have seen this win.

There are few things to rejoice in today, but they do exist. The horrors may persist, but so do we.

I've had this black fuzzy yarn for YEARS and its been taunting me to find a use for it. I figured a fuzzy bumblebee vibe could work. Or perhaps Cher from Clueless? But linty?

Leaning into the loose weave trend that I've been on, with the long-term goal of making myself some patchwork sheer curtains to add some color to my new apartment :) I have blinds thankfully but it's kinda stark white so I'm hoping to add warmth and a personal touch this way

I asked my grandfather to make me a loom twice the size of the one I've had since I was a kid 🥹 he did such a good job and I can't wait to play with it! This was my first attempt, I'll have to explore other materials since the knots are not ideal, but what a privilege it is to have a loom made with love!

Alas, I wove too hard and had to send the loom back to grandpa for reinforcements. The sides started to twist inward due to the tension and I'm afraid of breaking it. My grandfather is happy to fix it, he said making it was a lot of fun for him, so it feels like he and I are just taking turns playing with the same toy.

Update! My grandfather reinforced the corner joints and my loom is stronger than ever :)

"A Touch of Pride" 🏳️‍🌈

Happy Pride month! I have completed or at least put on hiatus my little Pride flag series and here they all are together on one post. Technical details and further thoughts after the pics.

First, the technical: I wove these on an untensioned frame loom at 6 epi using Lettlopi yarn for the weft and cotton seine twine for the warp. They are krokbragds, a Norwegian word which means “crooked path.” Krokbragd is a Norwegian twill weave. All of these are traditional Norwegian motifs, but you can also create figurative motifs using krokbragd. Each of these range in size from 10” x 11” to 12” x 12”.

Now, the design: The colors of each weaving correlate with the colors of a Pride flag: rainbow, transgender, bisexual, lesbian, and gay men (also heard this flag referred to as the Vincian flag). I didn’t do every Pride flag that exists, mostly because I’ve grown a bit tired of the twill pattern and need to put in some hours on my other tapestry loom to develop my hachure skills. In the future, I may develop more of these, but damn I need a break from over one under three with a pickup stick.

My goal in this work was to weave Pride flags and celebrate my queer community while exploring a weaving practice that connected me to the immigrants in my own family tree. I wrote a long and more indulgent essay about both immigrants and what it means to me as a bisexual cisgender woman to relate to the queer community but I know you are here for the weaving so I’ll just sum it up: Fuck ICE, and these weavings are dedicated to the gentle and grounded queer elders, mostly older gay men, who saw me and mentored me in my early jobs in theater and demonstrated a resilience and kindness I have sought to emulate ever since. If you’re really JUST here for the weaving, understand this: textiles are political and will never not be.

One of my earlier embroidery animations, this was my second one. I made sure that the designs were very simple, since I wanted this to be fairly long. The tangled thread is just purposefully messed up French knots.
