Agree. Fergus is hard wired to be a rule breaker, no way would he need any convincing to break Jamie out. Would be more Fergus-like to be his idea. 🙄
Not only that, but he’s also hardwired to be infallibly loyal to Jamie. And with saving his “milady” in the mix - I can’t imagine Fergus hesitating at all.
It also demeans Jamie, making him bargain like this - chips away at his papa bear deserving-of-all-the-respect King of Men-ness.
Where Time Goes By...
A lot of you know that I’m a full time caregiver. Ten years ago my very strong, active, hard working husband became ill with the first of what would become several different health issues. He’s been in a wheelchair most of that time. As time passes he becomes less able to do things. But we manage. Until we don’t.
A few of you here know, though most don’t, that last Thanksgiving he went into hospital. I won’t go into details but anyone who’s been through any kind of health crisis knows the hell of dealing with the bureaucracy of whatever system you happen to live in. I don’t know if you all would have been proud or appalled to see what kind of woman I turned into at times ;/ (Always be prepared to be an advocate for the ones you love!) Finally he was released to a long term care facility. And there we’ve been for the past months. Again, won’t go into all the details because we all have our life struggles and you don’t have to hear mine, LOL! But just to say, it isn’t the Droughtlander or the drama that’s kept me away from our lively tumblr and OA discussions but rather life.
A week ago today, he came home from the care facility. I won’t lie, it’s scary this time. Last November, though wheelchair bound, he was able to do most personal care things, he could transfer from bed to chair and back again. He was even doing some work for a neighbor. All of that is gone. He’s a big man, I’m a smallish woman. There’s a farm to manage… Yup, I get scared.
But, we’ve survived this week! And today, we celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary, on this first day of spring. I am lucky and blessed and amazed. I’m still thrilled every day to have this man in my life.
So I hope to be able to creep back into the conversations and celebrations and despairs of our Outlander sisterhood just a little bit more. I know I don’t need to remind you, but love hard and well on the ones in your life. Cherish the moments. And geez, I just love you guys, LOL! Thanks for letting me ramble x o

What’s in a name?
I’ve been thinking a lot this week about Jamie and his children (as we all have) and the distant, often problematic relationships he has with them. For a man who wanted nothing more than to farm his land and raise a passel of bairns, he was handed a raw deal (you didn’t have to be so rotten, DG. Just saying).
Everyone has their opinions about the line when Jamie says Brianna is a terrible name and many don’t like the way it was handled in 306. James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser’s name means everything to him. He was willing to risk his life rather than swear fealty to another clan. Kinship and family and clan are everything to him, and names are the embodiment of everything he feels about family. He would never do anything to dishonor his family or shame the family name. He changes his name multiple times to protect his family, and refuses to let others, Black Jack and Geneva specifically, use a name that has been given to him by his family.
And yet, he never had a say in the naming of any of his children. He didn’t get to see them, claim them, raise them, or even have the simple parental act of bestowing a name upon them. Not even Brianna is raised with his surname, though it is legally hers. He was denied EVERYTHING about being a father, save providing the sperm that spawned his children, and being a father is what he wanted most. Don’t tell me that telling Claire to “name him after my father Brian” has anything to do with Jamie actually choosing a name. Who knows what names he would have chosen had the wee lassie been placed in his arms, had he been able to look at her fingers, see her red hair, count her toes and know her to be real and alive and his. Claire did her best to honor him and his family in the name she chose, but still, she chose it. Willie is conveniently named the same as his brother, but again, Jamie had no say in that, and does not even get to share with Willie the fact that it is a special name. Giving Willie the baptismal name of James is the closest he will ever get to a father bestowing his name upon his flesh and blood.
I just think that it is terribly sad that a man of such honor and integrity who wants nothing more than to raise a family and continue a lineage that he is so proud of was so brutally denied that opportunity.
This is the saddest thing ever and I hate DG even more.
I guess the only solace is that throughout the books he becomes a father figure to so many others. He missed out on his wee bairns, but at least he gets plenty of adult children to contend with later (I’m looking at you, (spoilers!) Brianna and Roger and Willie and Young Ian and Rachel and Fergus and Marsali and The Beardsley Three ... did I miss any??).
Basically Jamie’s like a flame to super dependent moths. Fatherhood likes the cut of his jib, is what I’m saying. He couldn’t avoid it if he tried.

In six, simple four-line stanzas, Glover evokes the hopeful optimism of a young couple at the start of their life together (“When Tom and Elizabeth took the farm/The bracken made their bed/ and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle/ The magpies said”), then tells of the ongoing financial pressures they struggle under (“But all the beautiful crops soon went/to the mortgage man instead/and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle/the magpies said”). In the penultimate stanza, Glover shows the nihilistic futility of it all since years have passed, Elizabeth has died and Tom has lost his mind, and the final wrench comes from the poem’s bleakly unemotional conclusion: “The farm’s still there./Mortgage corporations couldn’t give it away/and Quardle oodle ardle wardle doodle/The magpies say.“
Nice poem but nope you’ve applied poetic license there - Oodle Addle (The Magpies is Denis Glover’s title) and it was not the tweet of Sam Roland Heughan: His words were Oodll addle.
Maybe the Nickie-Ben intended this nonsense to ensue but etymologically speaking you’ve taken a tad wee too much poetic license changing the “pre-title” of Denis Glover’s poem to suit your ends @weencounterednowildbeasts

Well, while I DO love a little poetic license, the interpretation above isn’t mine, and I did include Glover’s title. I used “Oodll Addle” as the title of my post, not the poem, to link it to today’s discussions. I thought it was an interesting think piece, and made no claims as to its meaning in my original post.
But since you brought it up, I think the cool thing about interpreting poetry - or any art - is that it is subjective. Just as we have a reader’s license to interpret novels and characters in our own way, we can also interpret poetry based on our subjective experience.
Because without the subjective/personal meaning we attach to it, what is the actual value of art? Otherwise it’s just canvas, some paint. A composition of individual notes. Rhythmic body movements without context.
But since I’m reblogging here, and I love a good poetry dissection, if there’s a link to be made between Oodll addle and oodle ardle, semantics and spelling aside, I think it’s this:
Artists can create art. They can produce beautiful things. They can use up their hearts and souls and lives creating these things. But their lives are temporary, as is their art. What is perpetual is the chatter of critics, the constant noise in the background. But artists suffer on, following that painfully human impulse to create, to stamp, to claim ... regardless of its futility.
Kind of appropriate for today, I thought.
Or maybe it means absolutely nothing.
And that’s the beauty of opinion.

You know what Outlander really needs? A scene where JAMMF and Fronk meet face to face.
Wouldn’t that be amazing? I mean, just imagine Frink’s expression. Just imagine the validation Jamie would feel.
Not even to fight, just to size each other up, for Jamie to be like, “oh, okay,” and for Frunk to be like “oooooh ….. ok.”
Then they could like, history battle one another. And Jamie would speak Latin, and Frenk would be like, this dude is the shit. Then they’d compare old man glasses.
And then Frynk would go away forever, finally understanding his place in the world.
I’d love it.
