Hi hi! I have a blog that talks about medical things. Please feel free to peruse, ask questions, make comments, message me, commiserate, vent, share success and happy stories, or basically whatever floats your boat! :) I’m hoping that by opening up and sharing, I can spread awareness of my rare diseases and maybe if you or someone you know feels lost and alone, we can become friends. Everyone’s diagnosis and individual disease is different, but if you need support, you can count on me and I will try to get back to you as soon as I can!! <3
When you go into the ER, one of the first things they ask you to do is rate your pain on a scale of one to ten, and from there they decide which drugs to use and how quickly to use them. I’d been asked this question hundreds of times over the years, and I remember once early on when I couldn’t get my breath and it felt like my chest was on fire, flames licking the inside of my ribs fighting for a way to burn out of my body, my parents took me to the ER. nurse asked me about the pain, and I couldn’t even speak, so I held up nine fingers. Later, after they’d given me something, the nurse came in and she was kind of stroking my head while she took my blood pressure and said, “You know how I know you’re a fighter? You called a ten a nine.” But that wasn’t quite right. I called it a nine because I was saving my ten. And here it was, the great and terrible ten, slamming me again and again as I lay still and alone in my bed staring at the ceiling, the waves tossing me against the rocks then pulling me back out to sea so they could launch me again into the jagged face of the cliff, leaving me floating faceup on the water, undrowned.

The closest I’ve come to a 10 is my seizure with dystonic reactions. I’m still saving my 10, too. An 8 is when I get sick from pain, a 9 is when the pain makes me pass out (Vasovagal response), I don’t know what 10 will be. When I reached this passage in the book (like a few others), I could swear that John Green was writing and speaking directly for me. I feel very strongly about this book.
You guys are so cute. It’s disgusting.
Depression is a side effect of dying.

I’ve always liked people with two names, because you get to make up your mind what you call them: Gus or Augustus? Me, I was always just Hazel, univalent Hazel.

I thought about telling her that I was seeing a boy, too, or at least I’d watched a movie with one, just because I knew it would surprise and amaze her that anyone as disheveled and awkward and stunted as me could briefly win the affections of a boy.
Hazel Lancaster. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (pg. 43)
I relate to this on a deep level lol
