2013. 5 years of my life were spent on this website, my most formative and most difficult years to get through. I was just a teen, and so angry, and tumblr was a place where I could forget everything, even if it was just for a little while. I learned more here about politics, gender, feminism, racism, everything (you name it) than an institution purposefully designed for education.
And so now tumblr has decided to ban all controversy (as it seems, with their censorship bots being so terrible), and curate interests on their end instead of the consumers end. I can’t abide by that action.
Sure I may have been a little green to learn what I learned, but nevertheless, I’m glad I learned it in a safe, blue environment. I don’t believe that tumblr is a safe environment for expression any longer.
Tumblr has always had its problems, but this latest decision is detrimental to the purpose of the site in its whole.
I am no longer an angry teen who need a distraction, an escape; but I sure as hell know that there are plenty more green people needing a site that provides the same purpose as it did for me. Tumblr is no longer a site that can give that sort of opportunity to learn and learn agency and identity.
If tumblr repeals this ban, I shall return, but I won’t stand by a site which I dearly love as it stands in the way of well-intentioned expression.
If any of you need me, you can find me on the wind.
with love, all these years later,
welshyak.
