Lafayette’s code name in Olmütz

After joining Gilbert in his imprisonment, Adrienne managed a lot of their communications, both with other prisoners and the outside world and their supporters. She was allowed some limited correspondence (heavily restricted and censored), and she also had a talent for covert activities. She was able to establish some secret lines of communication and was involved in passing information between Lafayette’s fellow imprisoned colleagues. When one of Lafayette’s former aides located in Hamburg, René Pillet, offered to take news from the prisoners on to Paris, he received instructions from Adrienne to take only his notes, and trust only her brother-in-law, Alexandre de Grammont, in his confidences. He was also to refer to her husband exclusively by his code name. That code name was “Noisy Bitch”. The humour sounds like GIlbert, but Adrienne had her own wit as well. I’d like to think it was something they agreed on together.

Hallo @creativitycache - you wanted a source on Code Name: Noisy Bitch. Paul Spalding relates the story in “Lafayette: Prisoner of State”. There aren’t really any more details beyond what I’ve included in my post, but Spalding cites a letter from Adrienne to Pillett dated 22 June 1796 - box 100/10, Arthur H and Mary Marsden Dean Lafayette Collection, Rare and Manuscript Collections, Carl A Kroch Library, Cornell University Spalding’s book is well sourced and rich in materials, many of which I suspect haven’t been translated before. Anyone who reads it who isn’t already in awed love of Adrienne will be by the time they finish, and Gilbert charms and inspires all over again. He even goes around winning over some of his gaolers, like the Commandant of Neisse, where he was imprisoned before Olmütz. And at the end of the whole horrific ordeal, he bounces back - not unscathed (you couldn’t be after what he endured), but his dedication to liberty and freedom were, if anything, strengthened.

What were the bowing customs of pre-Revolutionary France? Did they have to unlearn a whole complex hierarchy of who bows to whom and in what style and what depth? Were there awkward moments where you had to pretend to scratch your knee or something when you forgot the new customs and had to awkwardly abort midway through? Is there anyone else who thinks far too much about these minutiae or if my brain just getting lost alone in the weeds again?
