hermes in hadestown is the exact opposite of an unreliable narrator. a tortured narrator. a little *too* reliable. incredibly aware of exactly what is happening at any given moment, vaguely spoiling it for you in the beginning, despairing every second of it. but ultimately motivated to continue to tell the story over and over and over with a smiling face for the sake of the audience, and for the sake of the characters themselves, singing it again to keep them alive. knowing how it will end, but singing it again so that the cycle may restart and eurydice may come back to life. enduring the misery of it all, over and over, holding the knowledge of what will come to pass but continuing anyway to see orpheus happy just one more time before it all goes down in flames again.
Thinking about the Hadestown proshot and Orpheus being introduced wiping down a table with his back to the audience. Hermes has to call out to him again to get him to take his opening bow, and for the show to start, Orpheus has to turn around.
I wouldn’t be surprised if in Book 2, Leona had dehumanized Malleus so much that he didn’t even really think Malleus would die from the stampede. He describes Malleus as a monster earlier in the book, so in his head he could have been thinking “He’s fae, a few people won’t kill him… it’ll be just enough to stop him from participating in the tournament.”
Because Leona’s smart. It’s easy to forget that with how Book 2’s writing is, but Leona is one of the most intelligent members of the cast and is keenly aware of how politics work. That’s kinda the point of his dream in Book 7. So he of all people should have known what would happen should the one and only heir to Briar Valley die. It would be a political incident like no other. A Leona fully in the right headspace would never try to cause an incident on the level of murdering a future monarch.
But to him, Malleus was not a person that could die. He was a monster. He was a symbol. A symbol of all the things Leona himself could not have. When Leona looks at Malleus, he doesn’t see Malleus. He sees a crown, forever out of his reach. That crown drives him mad.
It’s that madness that drives Leona in Book 2. Not loyalty, not justice, and definitely not the intelligence he prides himself in. Just pure, mad, rage.
Like he says before he overblots: “How could any of you understand my anger? My pain?”
I think part of Book 2’s problem is it severely understates just how much anger is steering every choice Leona makes. He’s not being smart or cunning. He’s just an angry kid, throwing toys until someone gives him what he wants. But they don’t point out at all how the oversights in Leona’s plan are out of character for him, it simply passes it off as his usual cunning, so he looks stupid in the process. But he’s not stupid, his rage is simply overriding his brain.

Riddle
- Composed and disciplined, for the most part, Riddle would make a fine barista. He’s not one for many pleasantries. All you’ll likely get is a “Welcome, what can I get for you?” and perhaps the occasional short convo if you’re lucky. He’s not very chatty while working. And oh Sevens, as a customer, please do not flirt with him on the job- he’ll not have any of it.
- Now, like I said, in most cases, Riddle would do just fine taking orders… but on the off chance someone orders a strange drink? Oh dear…
- Iced Water with boba? Oreos in lemonade?? Absolutely not! There are rules to proper beverages and Riddle will enforce them passionately. Any outrageous orders are out of the question. You will instead get a talking to about the rules of flavor combos in drinks! (Perhaps thank him for saving your stomach in advance <3)
- Riddle is nothing if not a stickler for rules. He will make the drink exactly as he is trained to no exceptions. Secret Menu drinks? Yeah, maybe don’t try ordering them with him.
Trey
- Trey can be laid-back and responsible at the same time, which makes him a great barista. He deals with Ace and Deuce every day, so handling unruly customers is no big deal for him.
- Trey’s quite friendly, so you can expect some polite chatter if he’s not too busy! You might even get a motivational note on your cup with something like “Keep working hard!” Or “Have a brewful day!” (He loves puns, come on).
- Trey’s a baker, so you can expect his drinks to be delicious. Customers might even fight to get him to make their drinks! Trey would offer you some advice for baked goods in your café too, if you asked nicely <3
Cater
- Cater is less likely to be a barista and more likely to give you decor advice. Trust him, he’ll make your café so cammable!! If you somehow do convince him to be a barista, he’d be pretty good at it!
- Cater is a social butterfly and would get along easily with customers. He knows exactly what to say to keep people happy and chats with customers all the time while working.
- If there’s one thing that’s certain about Cater’s drinks, it’s that they’re so magicam worthy! He makes sure every drink is aesthetic, cause posts = clout = more business for your café! He might even snap a few of the drinks he makes, with a # cay-cay’s-latteart or # barista-cay-cay!!
- Oh and those magicam worthy secret menu drinks? Like a unicorn frappe? Yeah he’s so down, so ask him instead or Riddle kay?
Ace
- Are you sure? No, like, are you really sure you want him as a barista in your café? I mean if you’re sure, why not? But don’t let him share a shift with Deuce… Between the fact that Ace will prank Deuce any chance he can get and that two share a single brain cell, shenanigans are bound to ensue.
- He would totally ask for free drinks in exchange for his assistance. I mean he’s spending his hard-earned free time to help you! Besides, you’re best buddies, right? He should be getting free drinks anyways!
- If any other first years show up, be ready for even more shenanigans. He’d so dare Epel or Jack to order the most heinous drinks ever. Boba and chili powder in water? Yeah, sounds bad enough! Good Sevens, you hope their bowels are alright in the aftermath 🙏
- I imagine he had a rough time during training as well. Ace’s middle name isn’t fumble for no reason! The first time you showed him how to mix a drink in the blender, you came back to a mess all over the walls and counter. How did he manage to screw it up that badly? No one knows. He’s got the hang of it now, though, trust him!
Deuce
The sweet boy, he’d offer to help you in the café before you even asked! It’s what a proper honors student would do! Besides, you’re one of his closest friends, course he’d help you! But once again, do not put him in a shift with Ace unless you want chaos to follow!
- He’d take the job seriously, making every drink as perfect as he can! You’d catch him triple-checking every measurement. He’s gotta make sure your establishment keeps a good reputation for drink quality! He fumbles once in a while, but he’s trying his best, so take it easy on him!
- He’s usually quite polite too; however, when it comes to rude customers he can get a little scary. Of course, usually he can at least try and handle the situation in a tasteful manner, but if the customer begins to insult you? He’d be clenching his fists and glaring daggers at them. Please get the customer out before he starts a fight!

‧₊˚ ┊ Being your 'big brother' means a lot to him and Lilia is so happy to see his son step into that role since he had a feeling that his boy was somewhat lonely growing up as an only child (yeah he had Malleus and Sebek around, but they don't exactly yk? Malleus is more like an older brother and Sebek is more of a rival — you, however are the pseudo-younger sibling he’s always wanted)

Ignoring TWST, I'd say EPIC the musical! The release of the Ithaca saga livestream was such a core memory for me and the music is genuinely so so so good
Though Hamilton/ Reverse 1999 is a close second in my heart too
How the plot would be filled with tender good moments if it showed how Yu really deserves the trust of Grimm.
How they take care of each other away from judging eyes. How they open up to each other and comfort each other in difficult moments.
The author's grumbling. "two minutes would have been enough."
And Grimm would not have been so angry and would not have received so much hatred from the players for his lack of "character development"
You know, I was thinking about it, and there's a possibility we WILL be saved from the dreaded "Life is Fair" line yet.
Here me out...the Savanclaw manga wrapped in January.
Considering season two is dropping in December, development, storyboarding, scriptwriting, and all of that would've been well underway long before then. That means the last few chapters of the manga probably aren't direct source material for the anime finale.
Now, I'm sure there's communication between the teams, but they're still separate groups, I imagine. It gives me hope that the anime will be even more of an improvement and won't feel obligated to include THE AWFUL Yuuka moment with the "Life is Fair" flip, or that fucking bizarre conversation at the end where she straight-up says this:
Which confuses me to no end because… what the hell does that have to do with anything? Any of the themes? WTF DOES "BEING FRIENDS" HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING AND HOW EXACTLY DOES IT MEAN LIFE IS FAIR BC YOU HAVE A DIVERSE FRIEND GROUP???
If they wanted to do a hard work narrative, like: no matter what your staus or creed is we can all keeping going in this harsh world! I'd understand that. But this feels like toxic positivity nonsense, especially piggybacking off that terrible "Life is Fair" flip.
The lesson Leona has to learn narratively has nothing to do with being friends with others, IMHO. (I mean he could use more friends ig but not the point) Leona already associates himself with a diverse group of people. In fact, he's one of the least discriminatory characters in the cast. He consistently judges people by their talents rather than their status or background. That's why he works with Ruggie.
It would've made so much more sense to double down on the message of, "Yes, life is UNFAIR… but we can't let it beat us."
Diadem is very clear about Savanaclaw being the underdog dorm. That's practically its entire message as a song.
Why would we have THIS powerful of messaging only for our MC to shout "Life is Fair!!" to someone who clearly is suffering.
Besides, Yuuka, by all accounts, is not an underdog. They were setting her up to be this scrappy hardworking character who goes one despite the odds, but...what odds? The only fight we saw was her winning a match, she's a champ who's used to winning. Leona never gets to win.
The only real pushback she ever receives is some disapproval from her parents. And by all accounts she should understand the misogynistic view her parents were pushing on her and it is in fact NOT FAIR. What gives her the right to preach to anyone about life being fair, let alone Leona? And especially someone like Ruggie, who's ACTUALLY had to scrape for everything he's ever had. Was life fair for him that he had to eat out the dump as a kid? Like???
Yuuka was a poor foil to Leona. A character who was more passionate perhaps, or someone like Ruggie would have made more sense.

Anyways, y'all know my stance on the manga's weird writing at this point. I'm still holding onto hope that the anime writers go back to Savanaclaw's original message of persevering and continuing to fight in this unfair world despite it being against you! THAT IS SOMETHING ACTUALLY INSPIRING. Instead of trying to replace it with some dumb ass "Life is fair if you work hard enough!!" moral.
It just....rubs me the wrong way. Bc it's nothing but a toxic mindset that shifts all the blame onto the individual while completely ignoring systemic discrimination and unequal opportunities.
Not everyone starts from the same line. Some people have to work twice as hard just to end up in the same place, and pretending otherwise just invalidates the struggles of people who have been fighting uphill their entire lives. Leona needed a reality check by someone struggling more than him perhaps. But, Yuuka was not the right messenger, NOR was the final message delivered in a way that makes sense.
I have no idea why they decided to make "this "Life is Fair" Yuuka's motto when it does such a disservice to her character too by making her seem like some like some one-dimensional "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps" girlboss.
ANyways, MY POINT IS WE HAVE CHANCE for them to fix Yuuka and Savanaclaw's subpar writing.
