My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.

New local scandal is an old woman who will walk down to her mailbox in her robe, then, when no cars are driving by, lay down next to her mailbox as if she’s fallen or been hit by a car. Tourists will stop, help her up, and walk her to her house. Then, after they leave, she’ll repeat this until she’s bored with it.

Her neighbors have called the cops a bunch but have been told that it’s not illegal to fake being an old lady in peril so soft-hearted tourists or newcomers are nice to you. Hey so. Child of an influencer here, you’ve hit the nail on the head pretty well. I spent my childhood slowly learning that being happy around my mother would end up as just a way to make content. I stopped being around my mother, I stopped smiling around her, I ran, physically ran when I saw cameras, to this day I have to beg her to put her phone away whenever we’re hanging out. To this day when I do anything for her the first thing I see her do is open her phone and it makes me want to stop doing nice things. With my friends I always duck out of photos or push them away when it comes to things like that, even though I love them and I don’t want them to think I don’t want to hangout—if we plan on going somewhere “aesthetic” I make an excuse. I hate my body in the mirror because every photo of me online is filtered. My skin was bleached as a child. My mother had be use foundation to make it look lighter by the time I was 10. I feel gross looking at my skin. I feel worse wearing makeup. My biggest fear is being recorded. I’m convinced there are always eyes on me. I don’t feel safe crying in my own home because What If Someone Can See Me.

BTS deciding not to summit their work for the Grammys after knowing they’d most likely win next year is precisely what integrity looks like and I wish a lot of Latin artists would do the same thing.

The Grammys didn’t create that “Best Asian Music” category this year to be diverse. They did it to continue boxing non English speaking artists but especially BTS, so they won’t have to nominate them in the main categories with the rest of their peers. This was the Grammys telling BTS they’ll give them a Grammy win but under their own boxed category. We give you the scraps and you are supposed to take them. They said no.

They’ve been doing this for years under the disguise of diversity. “Best Traditional Country Album” a new category introduced after Beyoncé won in the Best Country Album category because they couldn’t stand a non white artist redefining that genre. “Best African Music” being introduced in 2024 to keep Tyla away from other pop girls. And “Best Latin Song” being introduced for this year along with Best Asian Music after Bad Bunny right fully dominated all of the charts last year.

It was never about diversity. It’s about boxing and categorizing these artists when global music (or more like non English music) is becoming bigger each year and this is the only way they can keep their American/British peers save in their space.
