You know, we joke that Nakhun and Phatsa seem to believe they’re in two different love stories but they kind of are, in their own minds.

Each grew up with wildly different expectations of what a long lasting romantic relationship would look like and now have to find a way to reconcile these two visions together into one.

Nakhun might seem callous on the surface but to him it makes perfect sent to satisfy physical pleasures with others when necessarily and then stop and be only with his mate once he finds one. He understands what a bond is and what it means. Yeah he doesn’t have a type because his type is literally just whoever his mate ends up being. He is extremely loyal to that vision and now to Phatsa because Phatsa is his mate and what’s more is that they are fated mates. Nakhun didn’t know it but his type was always Phatsa. This knowledge allows him a certain amount of freedom because he knows he’s going to fall in love with Phatsa, even if he hasn’t exactly yet. What he does know right now is that he likes Phatsa and wants to know more about him. He wants to make up for losing control and biting him.

Phatsa meanwhile was raised with an expectation of falling in love that looks a lot more like one might have irl. That you like each other and get to know each other and choose each other every single day. That you fight and make up and allow things to happen organically. He knows he likes Nakhun and he wants to at least try and make things work with him, but his insecurity flares when he hears Nakhun speak so matter of factly about their relationship. He feels insecure because does Nakhun actually like him? Or is it just because of the bond? He simply doesn’t know how to trust that Nakhun is genuinely falling for him because he’s so far out of his element that everything feels surreal.

It’ll be interesting to see where their relationship will take them from here as they continue to figure it out.

Having a traumatic childhood means you cannot talk even objectively about your basic foundational experiences without it being "venting", even if you're not actually venting. You just straight up have a huge chunk of your life you can't talk about, full stop, without it being trauma dumping.

And it not being socially acceptable to talk about your own childhood is super alienating. Sometimes people want to know why, and any answer you can give them is going to be off putting.

It's to the point I get irritated when something I said is framed as venting when I'm literally just talking about my life experiences, doing my best to keep emotion out of it.

when I was in high school, I overheard two older students talking about a friend of theirs.

One of them said something like, "it doesn't bother me that [Friend] was in residential mental health treatment, I just wish they wouldn't talk about it ALL the time".

The other replied, "Well, that was all of last year for them. So when they say 'when I was in treatment,' it's like when you say 'last year'."

I try to remember that any time someone says something that sounds Shocking to me. sometimes one person's scary special crisis is another person's last year.

If you want to be accepting of mental illness, you need to accept the fact that some people's everyday lives are going to be terrifying to you. That doesn't mean they don't get to talk about it. Stop forcing hurt, isolated people to become even MORE hurt and isolated because you can't fathom toughening up a bit.

thinking about a dog and a plane + the heart killers and how sometimes we get so wrapped up in questions of representation (i.e. are they representing this institution or this population correctly within the larger political conversation) that we forget to ask whether it's serving the people it's representing and their own experiences under and after those institutions. like, thk did not deliver some narratively explicit acab anti-prison industrial complex thesis statement the way many of us tumblrinas expected. the characters had to make deal with going to prison, living through it, and making it out the other side. and it wasn't some tragic story. it was just life for these characters. similarly, adaap represented the thai draft for the first time in bl (that i know of), and there's no "fight-the-power" narrative arc going on here. akki, like many other working class men in thai society who have less access to the military training alternatives in high school, had to attend the draft and got drafted (Daou and Frank are two actors who've served military duty after being drafted fyi). our rescue squad is not bringing an end to the draft or the Thai military. they're here showing us a common experience in thai working class life.

you can look at the subtext to get a better understanding of how p'jojo and his team views these institutions, but there's an understanding at the story-level that some queer people, often the less privileged, have few choices but to pass through the institutions. These are stories that offer mirrors and maybe even some coherence to those conflicted experiences. The "Not Me" stories that elevate disruption of wrongful institutions are important, but their tools for political change and not necessarily individual coping and understanding. When people praise P'Jojo about his progressive perspective, I think we need to be careful to not get that idea twisted with only picket signs and street marches. we can avoid feeling disappointed by where his series go if we recognize there are multiple ways to advocate for progressive perspectives. everyday people are enduring through restrictive systems. giving them tools to cope with that experience and realistic rather than idealistic portrayals is not necessarily a betrayal of the leftist ideals jojo seems to represent in the ql fandom.
