Islam gave women the right to choose who they marry. My mother told me that only women are criticized for premarital relationships because women âcarry the honorâ aka have hymens. She told me I couldnât use tampons because god said only my husband could touch me there. She said that god created a woman to have children and serve her husband; that a woman must obey her husband in order to win paradise. She told me that women cannot live alone, without male guardians, or else they were dirty whores. She told me all the problems in the world were caused by women being allowed to work and have sex as they pleased, that breast cancer was godâs personal punishment to women who chose not to have children, that menstruation was punishment for the original sin of Eveâs temptation, that the prophet said if he would tell a woman to prostrate herself to anyone besides god, it would be to her husband.
