I'm gonna reblog with some videos of people speaking various American Indian/indigenous American languages, because I think most people don't even know what they sound like. Not to be judgement of thatâjust, you know, I think people who want to be informed should know what they sound like!
Former president of the Navajo Nation, Joe Shirley, giving an address in Navajo.
Nora Marks Dauenhauer telling a story, "Raven and Deer", in Tlingit.
Albert White Hat, a well known Lakota teacher, translator, and activist, speaking Lakota.
This YouTube user, Grahm Wiley-Camacho, has uploaded a bunch of videos in Colville Okanagan Salish, but I'm not sure who all the speakers are.
Multiple people speaking Cherokee and talking about revitalization of the language.
This guy speaking Yucatec Maya (guest starring: adorable small child).
There's a ton of material in Greenlandic on YouTube, but it's hard for me to find, because the titles and other metadata are also in Greenlandic! Of course, this represents a huge win for the language, since this is a biproduct of being in vibrant use by a community of speakers. Greenlandic has been an official language of the territory of Greenland since 1979, and the sole official language since 2009.
Here are some proceedings of the Greenlandic parliament, the Inatsisartut, which are conducted in Greenlandic.
Here is a radio show in Greenlandic, from Kalaallit Nunaata Radioa.
And here is a video of Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam, Greenlandic MP in the Danish parliament (Folketing), causing some upset by speaking in Greenlandic instead of Danish.

it's that time of year when countless people in countless schools and universities start thinking about running a d&d night, and I'm here to tell you: that's the devil talking. listen, I play a lot of games, D&D among them, and I run a LOT of events for college students. what you want is a game with dirt simple mechanics, character creation that can be completed in about a minute or less, and a contingency plan to split your attendees into groups if too many of them show up to reasonably play together. maybe something that doesn't even have dice idk. I'm not being a buzzkill I SWEAR I'm sincerely trying to save you from the horrors of a D&D night where 20 people show up and half of them have level 20 characters packing 16 magic items and a bad case of Main Character Syndrome and the other half are going to need to spend 45 minutes making their first character sheet ever. just play a different game man.
some games that my co-GM and I are planning to run this year:
Dread
Queer Coven
Fiasco
I'm Sorry Did You Say Street Magic
The Quiet Year
Raccoon Sky Pirates
Lasers and Feelings or one of its many hacks
Knave if the students are very good
let me be so clear, for the folks for whom the context was insufficiently clear: this is for people workibg in various resource centers or student orgs on college campuses thinking about trying to host a (likely one-off) D&D night to spark student engagement without accounting for the logistical difficulties of a potentially large turnout of people who possess wildly varying levels of knowledge about how to actually play the game, all of whom need to be accommodated in a limited amount of time. I don't give a shit what you do in your homes games, I'm just looking out for my fellow programming coordinators.
source: the time my director finally found someone else to run a 5e one shot because I wouldn't do it, and an hour and fifteen minutes of the two hour session were spent on character creation
not to keep beating this busted piĂąata but I must admit I'm fascinated by the people chiming in to caution that many of these games work best facilitated by an experienced GM as if that's not also true of dungeons and dragons
TUMBLR I'M REALLY TIRED CAN YOU DO THIS ONE WITHOUT THE HAND-HOLDING?

My addition to the "add your concerns" section, in case anyone needs inspiration:
forcing many people to choose between outing themselves and placing themselves at risk of violence, or breaking the law. It risks creating endless confusion and unnecessary expense for businesses and potential loss of custom, which is hardly beneficial at a time when the economy is already struggling. It will continue and heighten the impression that trans people and our families already have that the Labour Party is fundamentally hostile to us as a group. It also sets an unsettling precedent to push something this far-reaching from behind closed doors, without Committee or Parliamentary oversight.
My boyfriend brought up the likelihood of legal consequences for staff members or members of the public feeling that they have to play Gender Police, and the potential for problems for non-gender-conforming cis people, because he figured our spineless pancake of an MP would be more sympathetic to that.
If you have a non-Labour MP an easy addition is: Do you find it acceptable that Labour is allowed to make law behind closed doors without the oversight or input of the rest of Commons? Does this set a good precedent? Are you confident that this power will be used positively? Don't you have a right vote on legislation in a Parliamentary democracy?
Anyone: *is watching Leverage for the first time*
Me: have you heard about watch order? Do you know the watch order? Hey. Hey. Are you aware that season one is out of order and requires a specific watching order. Hey. Hey. Hey. Have I told you about watch order yet?
May I present, the actual Leverage Season 1 intended viewing order:
The Nigerian Job (#101)
The Homecoming Job (#102)
The Wedding Job (#107)
The Snow Job (#109)
The Mile High Job (#108)
The Miracle Job (#104)
The Two-Horse Job (#103)
The Bank Shot Job (#105)
The Stork Job (#106)
The Juror #6 Job (#111)
The 12-Step Job (#110)
The First David Job (#112)
The Second David Job (#113)
What
The Actual
Fuck
Work is cancelled tomorrow I have more important things to do
The most important things about Viewing Order imo:
The Wedding Job. With the Wedding Job as #7 (airing order), it seems like Sophie is totally fine with the way things are going and then all of a sudden flips her lid about wanting a relationship. It feels like they just suddenly decided to insert drama by making her hysterical. But with the Wedding Job as number 3 it makes perfect sense: When Nate walked back into her life she must have made the totally reasonable assumption that they were going to have a relationship, and by episode three she's realizing that things are not going the way she expected. So then they have it out and she understands that he is interested but that it will take time, and that's pretty much the footing they're on for the rest of the season.
The Two Horse Job. Introducing Sterling is a big fun way of introducing something new to the mix, a way to upset the usual formula by bringing in somebody who actually has a chance against them. Broadcast order puts this as #3 which means it happens before you even have a chance to get used to the REGULAR formula. So it has less impact AND makes it harder to really get into the flow of the show, since so much is changing off the bat.
The 12-Step Job. It flows SO well into the First David Job, since 12-Step ends with quitting rehab and First David starts with the "intervention." Once you see that, it's obvious that 12 Step was MEANT to set that up and get us moving into the finale. Instead the broadcast order jams Juror #6 in between them, which is a very different tone and focus and loses that whole momentum.
The Juror #6 Job. I don't want to take credit for this, I saw SOMEBODY bring it up but I'm not sure if it was on this post or what. But anyway. If you put Juror #6 back where it belongs, it goes after the Stork Job. Which means we've just had a pretty dark Parker episode and seen how bad she is at people. So it makes sense to follow that with a more hopeful episode for her and it makes sense to insist that she needs to go do this to improve her people skills, since we've just seen that that's an issue.
Also, the Snow Job being 4th in order rather than coming later in the season makes the team's anger at Nate's drinking make more sense. In the airing order, the team has seen Nate drink severely for a while now, so it makes their anger at it seem like it's coming in way too late. It also makes Nate's disregard of their feelings seem cruel after everything they had been through up to that point. I remember growing up and hating that episode cuz it made it feel like everyone took a huge step back in how much they had grown to care for each other. I like it much better at #4.
And another point on the Two Horse Job, it coming before the Wedding Job makes Nate seem like an even bigger asshole than he really was. Elliot brings them the job in the Two Horse Job and Nate is fine with it. But when Sophie brings them the Wedding Job a couple of episodes later, Nate blows up on them about how he is the only one that brings in clients. When the Wedding Job is #3, it makes sense cuz Nate hasn't learned to give up control. But when it comes after the Two Horse Job, it makes him seem like he is picking on Sophie in particular, and it always pissed me off.
The writers took a lot of care when planning out the character development, and it sucks that so much of it was wasted by the studio changing the order on them.
Also, in the Wedding Job, Eliot talks about how he blew it with his fiancĂŠ. Which is useless exposition, given that we met her already (airing order) in the Two-Horse Job.
And in the Two-Horse Job the ex-fiance tells Elliot that she's glad he's found a family, which is an absolutely wild assertion when they've done like. Two jobs total.
Youâve been kidnapped and the main character from the last show you watched is coming to rescue you. Are you safe?

hello fellow non-Black tumblr users. welcome to my saw trap. if you'd like to leave, please name one (1) Black woman author who is not Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, bell hooks, Octavia Butler, or N.K. Jemisin. bonus points if she's published a book in the last five years.
For my own future reference, and for anyone else who wants it, a list of authors mentioned in the notes. (I cannot promise this is comprehensive, there are a lot of reblogs and I might have missed some.) I've included a link for each author, where possible I've tried to find one that leads you to their books, prioritising own websites/publishers, falling back on wikipedia otherwise.
If you find any mistakes in the links let me know and I'll edit. This post will be in two parts, because I literally broke tumblr with how many authors there were. I think it's about a hundred and fifty.

Crows are scary They
use tools
Can be taught to speak (like parrots)
Have huge brains for birds
like seriously their brain-to-body size ratio is equal to that of a chimpanzee
They vocalize anger, sadness, or happiness in response to things
they are scary smart at solving puzzles
some crows stay with their mates until one of them dies
they can remember faces
SIDENOTE HERE BECAUSE HOLY SHIT. They did an experiment where these guys wore masks and some of them fucked with crows. Pretty soon the crows recognized the masks = douchebag. But the nice guys with masks they left alone. THEN, OH WEâRE NOT DONE, NO SIR crows that WERENâT EVEN IN THE EXPERIMENT AND NEVER SAW THE MASK BEFORE knew about mask-dudes and attacked them on sight. THEY PASSED ON THE FUCKING INFORMATION TO THEIR CROW BUDDIES.
They remember places where crows were killed by farmers and change their migration patterns.
Guys Iâm really scared of crows now. (q)Â
Yeah but have you seen thisÂ
A colleague of my dadâs lives next to a lake, and looked out the window one morning to see a duck trapped in the ice. A crow swooped down. âOh hell,â she thought, expecting carnage, because crows are opportunists. But the crow chipped at the ice with its beak until the duck was free.
Idk of this counts but a few crows saved me from a magpie swooping attack once ,theyâre bros who can tell when magpies are being unreasonable and need to chill
I love crows so damn much. When I was fifteen, I hit a pretty serious bout of depression, to the point I was in my room for months. Well, a family of crows made a nest in a tree outside my window. There were two parents and two chicks. One chick was healthy and strong. One was weak, and had a caw like something being strained. It sounded more like a rooster crowing and so my parents jokingly named him âBuckâ.Well⌠months passed and Buckâs sibling was taught to fly. His parents focused on the sibling because the sibling was strong. The father stayed behind to try and teach Buck, but I saw him try to fly, fail, and crash to the floor. His father helped him back up into the tree.
Every day, I would watch Buck from my window until one day I opened it and started talking to him. He was small and gangly and he couldnât caw right. His feathers were all over the place and I felt a kinship. So I made a deal with him. I told him that if he could do it, if he could fly, then I could find the strength to get up. Well⌠near the end of the season, after talking with him every day, I finally saw him get out of the nest. He went to the edge of his branch, braced himself, and jumped⌠and just before he hit the ground, he soared back up into the sky. I cheered harder than I ever had before.
That winter, Buck left the area. I was crestfallen. I felt like Iâd lost a friend. But I was so damn proud of him.Â
Cut to the next spring? Iâm walking up the driveway one day when suddenly I hear a sound⌠a broken caw. I look up, and Buck is sitting in a tree above my head. He stared at me and puffed his feathers, then hopped down in front of me and cawed again. I was so damn thrilled, and I told him how proud I was of him. He ruffled his feathers and then soared off into his old tree.Â
That summer? I heard two broken caws. One from Buck⌠and one from his chick.
Cut to ten years later? We have a family of crows who all have a very distinct caw and they come here and spend every spring, summer, and fall on our property. Buck still greets me every spring.
that last reply made me wanna cry. thatâs so beautiful.
Donât forget the Russian Crow SLEDDING DOWN A ROOF not once, but twice.Â
this one morning i kept hearing really loud caws, i remember it was like 5am, LIKE REALLY LOUD AND ANNOYING AND AGGRESSIVE, so loud that i could hear it through a closed window, and i eventually went outside to check it out. there was a crow on my front lawn, it had an injury on its head and couldnât fly and there were two other crows circling right above it, and they were cawing like mad.Â
i tried to get close and take a better look and one of them dived super low and tried to attack me. so i went back in the house and chopped some sliced raw meat and tossed it at him from a distance.
a few more times later, very soon after, they could tell i was trying to help, and did not attack me. i was âallowedâ to walk up close and pick him up, he couldnât drink water properly so i had to dip my finger in a bowl and stick it in his mouth.
i did this few times a day and it went on for about a week before he disappeared, i thought he recovered and left, but he came back the next day and lands on me, and i see him around the block quite often, and he would come sit on my shoulder for a few minutes and then fly away again. i feel like iâve adopted a son.
Best birbs !!
your son is Beautiful and Strong
every time I see this post it has different crow stories and every time I reblog it again because all crow stories are good stories
Like, I wouldnât want to be on bad terms with a crow, but they are a really smart animal, they arenât scary You just want to be nice to them because they will know and they will remember, and they will pay you back if you treat them a certain way.
As a side note, I volunteered at a rehab (Hope for Wildlife), where they were rehabbing a crow with a broken wingâwho was named Russell Crow. He kept pulling his bandage off so a sleeve was cut off some old clothing and put on him like a little sweater.Â
!!!!
I donât think Iâll ever not reblog this. This posts makes me cry and smile at the same time.
Heâs so handsome!!
I would trust a crow with my life

i now work on a hospital ward. heres is what i discovered .
Doctors are pack animals. They spend most of their time locked together in a tiny room and wonât leave as individuals until the entire group has collectively scouted the situation. You can identify seniority by identifying if the doctor is wearing a shirt. Only important doctors get to wear a shirt.
Nurses are much more independent, spending most of their time on their own. They do gather briefly to share information but apart from that they are mostly solitary. You can tell seniority by how intensely blue they are. The more blue the more pay. Very blue nurses can join the doctors on their pack outings.
Phlebotomist entirely solitary. They show up remove blood and fuck off without comment.
Physiotherapists/ Occupational therapists are pack animals forced to be solitary. Always up for a chat.
Healthcare assistants are more similar to nurses than one would assume. Though they canât do anything that requires a degree. You can differentiate HCAs from nurses because a request for pain meds will be met with the reply âI will find the nurse.â followed by one or two minutes of watching that person pace up and down the wards as nurses are hard to find. They also donât do any paperwork. If someone has paper work thats not a HCA.
cashier: ok that'll be $20
me (visibly sweating): ah, yes, of course! a perfectly reasonable price for a grilled cheese and a small smoothie! that was exactly the price i expected you to say when i ordered a single grilled cheese and a smoothie and my vision is NOT getting blurry as we speak! i am a perfectly normal temperature and my speech patterns are natural and even because this is the countenance of an individual who expected to pay 20 american dollars for a single grilled cheese and a smoothie!
cashier: where's all that blood coming from
YES!!
