He wanted to explore her fears more, so that heâd be able to formulate a way to comfort her. But the single world answer was more than enough to clue him in that there was too much in her head for her to even have that conversation. Anyway, his only job was to be there for her. And if that meant he just had to make sure she got there and gets back home safely, then heâd have accomplished it in a way. For the most part, he was just going to follow her lead. At the mention of her just wanting to catch up with some sleep, he nodded. âYeah, of course.â He took a quick glance at her before he started the car. If rest was the only way sheâd get peace of mind while they anxiously anticipated what was to come, he wouldnât keep her from that. âPull your seat back and just nap. Iâll be fine, I have Carrie Underwood for company,â he jested, trying to get a laugh out of her.
Thankfully, Ben already had the address and relied on the GPS to take them where they needed to go. When he was sure sheâd already dosed off, he took a couple of glances her way. And when his eyes turned back to the road, his eyebrows met as his thoughts drifted. The songs that played in the background blurred out and he was left mostly alone with his thoughts. And even in his thoughts, she was there.
Chloe slept like a baby. Maybe it was the fact that she was exhausted, or maybe it was the fact that she knew, deep down, that her soul was at rest much more around Ben than it was around anyone else, which was such a wild contradiction to how her conscious mind felt, which spent so much time terrified that she was making up their connecting in her mind, and that any moment, he would leave her heartbroken.
Nevertheless, she blinked a couple of times to clearn her eyes and began looking around. âMan.. sorry I just felt asleep on you like that.â She said, turning the music down. âI was just... so exhausted.â She gently placed her hand of top of his at the stearing wheel, knowing he couldnât really look at her, but rather at the road. âI just wanted to say again how greatful I am that youâre doing this with me. I would never have the courage to go on my own.â She sighed to herself, retrieving her hand and leaning back on the seat and looking at the road again. âI havenât seen Rebecka in forever... sheâs a senior now.. and Ruth... she was 1 when I left so she most be.... 5 years old now.â Was it really possible that this much had happened in just four years? âI donât even know if she knows I exists...â
