all but one of my works this year are just sketches and vary in quality, but i did my best with the energy that i had <3 starting with a screenshot redraw that i slapped a low opacity butch flag gradient map over 🤭

uninstall adobe acrobat. it is malware. it has been malware. these aren't opinions: acrobat meets the definition of malware.
it installs a user-login-time "startup" executable that ignores any windows directives to disable it on startup. doing so only removes the even-more-malicious taskbar-icon-creating advertisement-notification-creating process. no matter what you do, the sleeper "updater" process starts when you log in, and runs perpetually
it sends & receives encrypted network traffic both periodically and non-periodically. both are bad, both are suspicious, and a program doing both is more suspicious than the sum of their parts. and to boot: acrobat will polymorphically edit its code after such network activity
this isn't new: it has always done this. now, it does not even do the thing it is meant to: provide a way to interact with documents, which is amongst the very first features computers were built to provide. you can merely open PDFs and read some of their content in the narrow space between the requests for adobe to give them your money, and interface for features you cannot use (because you don't) or do not, have not, and will not ever need
adobe and microsoft would very much like the user's cultural norms around computers to allow for advertisement built into the local software and even operating system itself. the web being 100% advertisements was not enough! sure enough, acrobat will hijack the windows notifications system thing to give you the 2026 equivalent of pop-ups
i don't really know enough about windows software equivalents, so i'll paypal $20 to the first person that reblogs this with a list of 3-5 PDF reader/editor/etc acrobat equivalents that meet the following criteria:
open source, locally-built executables must match checksum of prebuilt distributed executable
no paid features/premium version/subscription/whatever
not a toy hobby project thing, must be windows-users-proof

Firefox's built-in PDF.js viewer: does everything you could want from a basic viewer, fast enough search, and can now do annotations for filling in forms and such
KDE Okular: is a decent viewer and can also do basic annotations, and is so not-a-toy that you can even download it on the Windows app store.
LibreOffice Draw: I don't ever really like having to open this but if you have to edit a PDF in detail it does work, and doesn't just vomit up a bunch of polygons when you give it text to work with. Better as an authoring tool than an editor.
I've 100% replaced free acrobat with the firefox built-in and it works wonderfully for general office use and research/reading/viewing. It doesn't have robust redaction capabilities, but if you need to fill and sign and highlight a form it's actually much more intuitive than acrobat reader.
so fun how as a tenant you just have to double check everything your landlord says against the actual law because they WILL demand money from you for repairs you legally are not responsible for. why do I need to be an expert in tenant's rights in order to not be exploited. why are there no consequences for landlords who lie to their tenants in order to extract more money from them

The Girl Who Fell Through The World. "I thought we could all look through and see what parts we think fit, and what was exagerated or skewed." "Of course you did," Yang sat up. "Weiss and Ruby are out." Blake raised an eyebrow as she set the book down on a side table "Been a while since it was just them doing anything. Maybe Weiss will finally confess," Blake walked over and sat next to Yang. "Weiss? The emotionally repressed ice queen?" Yang quirked an eyebrow. "Maybe she's finally gotten a push," Blake slid closer. "Like we did just, y'know, not as literal" "Facinating as that thought is I was thinking," Yang slid her hand on top of Blakes but her cheeks flushed and she felt suddenly nervous. "That we're alone and finally have some time for just us?" Blake replied, turning Yangs face to hers with a grin. "Y-yeah," Yang stuttered out, eyes already on Blakes mouth. Blake didn't hesitate as she leaned in and pressed their lips together. Then pushed Yang onto her back.

ID / TL;DW: young Black man explains the history of voodoo dolls: they originated in England, where Black people where prohibited from learning to read or write, to help witches keep track of what ailed their patients. Eg., person goes to witch and laments headache, they treat their headache and make a small doll (called "poppet"), trying to represent them as good as possible, stick a needle in its head and put it up a shelf. When they return next week, the witch takes their poppet and asks about their headache. If it's gone, they remove the needle, otherwise they know they have to treat a rather persistent headache.

the presence of the vytal coliseum + almost all of the kingdoms being in the same place + rising tensions between the people I actually think v10 is going to parallel v2 and 3 where they have a dance and mini tournament to unite the people of remnant and lift spirits iirc the vytal tournament was originally created to symbolize unity right? Plus by raising everyone's spirits/lowering negativity it makes it way harder for salems grimm to sniff out the city #vacuo ball 2027 and #yang winning the vytal tournament 2027
It wouldn't be bad to see a Vacuo Ball and a mini tournament, but I don't think there is space for it in the storyline by this point unfortunately. They still have a lot to cover before the finale and we don't know for sure how many more volumes Viz is ready to support.
People are low on moral now, yes, but having Team RWBY back & more alive than ever will surely give them enough motivation to carry on against Salem. Their heroes have come back from "certain death", it will probably put them on a pedestal higher than before. <3

So every year, my aquarium does a captive lobster hatchery project (hence all the loblings). The reason we’re doing it is because in the wild, loblings only have a 1 in 25,000 chance of surviving their larval phase. They’re plankton as babies and everything eats them. Additionally, as the Gulf of Maine warms, they are having even lower survival rates because the blooms of copepods they feed on as babies are happening earlier in the year, and they’re missing it.
Obviously, the goal of this experiment is to grow the lobsters until they’re big enough to settle to the seabed and then release them, because they have a much higher likelihood of surviving to adulthood when they’re able to hide. Ideally, captive lobster hatcheries can boost the wild population and keep things stable, so we don’t have a major crash in a decade or two.
The first year we tried this was pretty bad. We had a lot of eggs, but very few babies. It turned out that the CO2 levels in the building spiked as more guests visited throughout the summer, and that settled into the water and threw off the pH and caused a chemical reaction that prevented a lot of the eggs from hatching. I think we ended up releasing three baby lobsters (which is still better than their wild survival rate but not great).
The second year was a little better. We added a de-gasser to the aquarium and got a ton of larval lobsters, but right as they were settling to the bottom we had a disease outbreak that killed most of them. We ended up releasing four babies at the end of the season.
But this year? Oh boy. We have so many lobsters that we had to release the first round early (usually we wait till September or October so guests can see them). We just released a total of FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE baby lobsters, and we still have over a hundred who haven’t settled to the bottom yet. I genuinely don’t even have words to explain how cool this is. OVER FIVE HUNDRED. We just added hundreds of lobsters to the wild population that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.
