This is two pigeons, pigeons nest in bonded pairs (notice the first one is checked and its mate on the nest is barred). Usually they don’t make nests nearly so big but I guess if you have the materials, go for it.

The nest is so unusually big because the vast majority is a platform to keep the actual nest (just that tiny ring in the corner around the bird sitting in it) cushioned from the anti bird spikes.

This is a work of beautiful defiance.

Using the very thing installed to make just a moment’s rest impossible as structural supports for an immovably stable nursery.

The thing is that like “edgy humour” really is a GIANT red flag among young white men……you hear white boys making racist jokes all the time but people tend to brush it off and assume they’ll grow out of it or that they’re just going through a harmless edgy humour phase and like…..some of them might grow out of it but that’s not the POINT! They’re racist NOW! They’re spreading islamophobic ideas NOW and we brush it off because we assume they’ll grow out of it in the future but whether they do or not is irrelevant; they need to grow out of it Right. Now. Or more lives will be lost.

As someone who has worked with teenage boys, most of whom actually liked and/or respected me, the best tool I had for shutting down edgelord bullshit was a flat stare and “you’re better than that”. Simultaneously conveying “I am disappointed”, “I have expectations of you”, “you have otherwise met them”, “that sort of behavior is unacceptable”, and “you are better than the people who engage in that sort of behavior, but only so long as you don’t join them.” is an incredibly powerful tool with kids who care about what you think. The worst I ever had to escalate to was ‘disappointed headshake and “I thought you were better than that”.’ I’ve never had to repeat the sentiments or escalate after deploying that one. Actually made one of them cry once with just that. He felt that bad about letting me down, and we had a solid talk after. With guys my age, “I guess you’re not the kind of man I thought you were.” has proven effective.

Even around young men who don’t [yet] respect me, a hard stare and a moment of uncomfortable silence is an incredibly useful tool. If you can train yourself to freeze rather than laugh nervously when people are saying uncomfortable or gross shit, you can make them uncomfortable, too. The best visual depiction I’ve ever seen for that technique with a dude being gross who doesn’t respect the person he’s being gross to is Captain Holt’s treatment of Jake Peralta in the pilot episode of Brooklyn 99, if you want to see it in action. The gross joke comes out to try to make you flustered and uncomfortable? Freeze for a minute. Let the moment spin out while you think of what you want to say, and keep your face either neutral or confused. Then say something dismissive and calm - “you’re supposed to be so smart? You can’t even tell why I asked you to do that.” “Wow. Let’s pretend that didn’t happen.” “You think that’s funny? Huh.” Do not laugh. Try not to move your face, if you can. You will be hideously uncomfortable, but it will be worth it: so will the young man who thinks it’s funny to make you uncomfortable. 

(Holt in that episode is particularly great for those of us who are marginalized and taking on leadership roles, because you can see a really good model of someone who knows that people under his command are probably not going to respect him just because he’s in charge setting out very effective tactics to keep control of his precinct despite those kinds of “I don’t think you are worth listening to” immediate responses from Jake and, to a lesser extent, Charles. Seriously, if you are going to teach, command, or otherwise lead a group of people in your professional life, watch that episode. Keladry of Mindelan in Tamora Pierce’s Protector of the Small quartet is also a useful model.) 

But I agree with @terulakimban, as someone who teaches at the college level. Most of the time, you start with a baseline level of respect, even with young men who are pulling the edgelord humor bullshit. Flat stare, a frown, “You’re better than that,” or “I thought you were better than that” for maximal pressure. You might not even need to say anything at all–flat stare and a disappointed face, then proceeding as if the person said nothing is often enough. 

Most people care what you think, is the thing. Treating that stuff with calm distaste or mild disgust is probably the most aversive social reaction it’s possible to give, because the gent doesn’t get any points from his friends (he made Teacher Upset! he’s WON) and he doesn’t get to feel like he’s WON by making you uncomfortable. At the same time, he also doesn’t get the validation of seeing the laughter, either because you thought the joke was funny (and HE’S funny for making it!) or because you are nervous and uncertain and afraid of your own social position and smoothing things over (and HE’S stronger by contrast!). Being controlled, pointing out that your opinion of him is dropping, and moving on lets you keep control of the interaction and leaves the dude engaging in “edgelord” humor off balance.

And immediately afterward Raoul's love song to her says "anywhere you go, let me go too. love me, that's all I ask of you," telling her her life is her own and all he wants is the chance to be a part of whatever she decides that means........

That she doesn't get to sing a line in Music of the Night but in All I Ask of You she gets to tell Raoul what she wants and he responds that he'll deliver it........

Back to PotO and horses, I remembered Erik “borrowed” a white horse in the book (rather apt considering he fancies himself Death), and the 2004 movie had Raoul riding a horse in the graveyard scene, albeit a white one. Hence these *waves hands*

I also sometimes wonder whether the whole Red Death and Masquerade Ball thing had been influenced by Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death”. I love Poe’s writings (I think I read most of his short stories), so it would be cool if there is some relation there.
