Already in the Iliad [Odysseus] is notable for his cool rationality, as in the passage (11.401-10) where he considers becoming a coward, but decides that on the whole it is not for him. Odysseus does a kind of cost-benefit analysis of everything, weighing present expenditure against hoped-for utilities. It is miserable to spend even one month from home, he tells the troops, and for them it is already the ninth year, 'but all the same it is disgraceful to stay long and come home empty' (2.297-8). Similarly in the Odyssey he tells Alcinous that however eager he may be to get home, he would stay another year to come home rich (11.355-61). We may also think of his fake but plausible tale of himself lingering among the Theosprotians, collecting gifts that would 'feed the tenth generation' (14.325). Cedric Whitman says that Odysseus is a master of the delayed response, the long way around. Much of his well-known craft is a matter of taking thought for the necessary means and the claims of material life. Thus in the Iliad he reads Achilles two lectures on the necessity of eating before battle (19.155-70, 216-32). He strikes a related note in the Odyssey (7.208-21) [...] This is materialism of the Brechtian sort: 'Erst kommt das Fressen, dann kommt die Moral' ('First comes feeding, then comes morals.') Odysseus' version is: 'First feeding, then grieving.'
—James M. Redfield, 'The Economic Man'
Common phrases from owners that really do need clarification:
"Breathing heavy": do you mean panting? Coughing? Reverse sneezing? Labored abdominal breathing?
"Not moving": does the animal not *want* to get up but physical can and will if you pester it? Is it conscious but truly unable to get up? Are the hind legs specifically not working? Is the animal limp/unmoving when you pick it up?
"Has a wound": is this a superficial scratch or did the animal tangle with barbed wire? Are all pieces of the animal still attached? Also, did this happen today, yesterday, last week or 3 weeks ago?
"Limping": is there a subtle hitch in their giddyup? Are they bearing weight at all? Are they toe-touching or holding it up entirely?
"Difficulty walking": are they able to walk *at all*? Are they dragging a leg or legs? Are they walking like they're drunk? Are they circling to one side?
"Not eating": do you mean just their regular food but will eat treats? Are they eating less? Eating slower but still finishing it? Or are they refusing to swallow even their favorite food?
"Lethargic": do you mean they only wanted to walk 4.5 miles instead of the full 5? They don't want to play or go on the walk at all? They are choosing to lay in one spot and prefer not to get up unless they have to, such as for food or to go to the bathroom? Are they unwilling to move even for food?
I like to think there's an Ankh-Morpork show (perhaps a live stage show) that's a combination of Great British Bakeoff and Forged in Fire where they bake dwarf bread and then attack a ballistic dummy with it.
Dwarves rampage across the city after Paulo Holy-Wood confidently states that "A throwing scone is basically just a week-old Brindisian Pannettone coated in caramelised sugar to give it an edge"
"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, being spent on species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.

they should invent an autism accommodation that's like: okay so there's a guy next to you and whenever you have a conversation and you know you've chosen the wrong dialogue option, you can later present it to him for review and he can tell you why. And then whenever you run out of the energy to do your own pr rep he simply takes over your body and comes up with the correct phrasing and tone to explain what you want to get across. So basically noise-cancelling headphones are NOT going to solve all my problems and we need intermittent demon possession
in my revolutionary Guy Next To You autism accommodation plan the Guy will also alert you when you should ask people to alter their behavior and when you should not. Sometimes you're annoyed at people for having a haircut that is bad. Sometimes you're annoyed at them for asking you out three times after you've said no. But many situations fall in between these two extremes, and Guy Next To You will help you determine which are actionable
has anyone noticed that sometimes you take incorrect or undesirable actions instead of the correct and desirable ones? what's up with that
fuck y’all if you laid up with your lil boo rn i hope the ceiling fan fall on y'all
