It’s interesting how the vocabulary of fashion has changed - based on books I’ve read from this sort of period, where I was initially confused but figured things out from context, while today we say “mannequin” to mean an object made in the shape of a human body to display clothes on, then it was a person who wore clothes to display them (and also the display object, the live person was so called in reference to it). A “model” was not the person displaying the clothes, it was a specific item of clothing or ensemble - so for example a fancy lady goes to a fancy boutique and asks to see the spring fashions, and the house mannequins put them on and show her. She says, “I’ll take the green silk model,” and then the house seamstresses will make that same green silk dress to her measurements. The end product was customised to the wearer, but then as now, you typically only got to see the sample styles that you would choose from displayed on people with currently fashionable figures.
