Tyson Fury win new low for heavyweight boxing (Response)
As a full and complete platinum V.I.P. card carrying member of the TMT Floyd Mayweather cheerleader squad, I would like to extend a hand toward Tyson Fury fans, welcome, to the city of hate, we have been waiting for you.
You thought the press harboured a seething negative attitude toward your favourite fighter before? Prepare for an ensuing torrent of offensive barbs; side words and often open and blatant plain old hatred toward him, now that he’s the heavyweight champion.
The flushed faced retorts and frustration, begin with the seemingly uneducated (regarding the sport of Boxing) Steve Howard. This gentleman’s awkward article reads more like the beer soaked bleats of an ejected pub goer, debating boxing over a greasy Doner and slurring tongue. As opposed to chief sports writer for the biggest national newspaper in the country producing an insightful piece on one of the biggest and most sensational upsets in the history of the sport.
Before we speak about that article in The Sun, let me offer a few words and a full disclosure. I really didn't like Tyson Fury a good few years ago, and I can’t call myself his biggest supporter now. His racially tinged tweets lovingly delivered to a fan a good few years ago now, really offended me.
In response to his racist tweets, in 2012 I wrote a scathing article where I said he had comedic defence and a Charlie Chaplin style of Boxing, which back then, he kind of did (punching yourself in the face is pretty comedic, come on) I tore into him.
I boycotted his fights for a year; the prospect of giving someone my support who carried himself like Fury did at the time, I was openly and honestly opposed to. I began covering his fights again in 2013, and have to admit to myself, I enjoyed them.
On the Flip side the Fury family, in particular Peter Fury I absolutely love, his class, his mannerisms, how he carries himself. I respect his boxing knowledge and most importantly, he is the man who constructed the game plan to beat Wladimir Klitschko. This in my eyes by default deserves at the very least a modicum of respect from every fight fan.
This intricate blueprint to dethrone Wladimir, amazingly, can now be seen to be woven within the very fibres of Tyson’s muscles. It has been kneaded into Tyson’s fighting style from very early on in his career; Fury it seems was moulded from a professional, for the sole purpose to beat Wladimir Klitschko. The style he has fought with up until this point, merely an offshoot of this focused goal, truly impressive.
However I still didn't like Fury…
A year passed; I calmed down about it, and moved on, at first to be honest for the benefit of my Boxing channel and writing, and then for myself. Race occasionally being a touchy subject obviously as a black man living in the UK, I can be forgiven for that. I grew up a bit and once I saw every other race, sex and orientation of human get offended by Fury, figured to let it go.
What became undeniable to myself as more of a Wladimir fan then a Fury one, was the fight by fight increase in skill by the furious one. The switch hitting; the natural and fluid punching and positioning, the culmination of which, we saw Saturday night. There is something special happening here…
Such prominent success on such an elevated golden platform, such as the podium of Heavyweight king, brings with it copious amounts of jealousy; upset and frustration.
Howard in his “article” here, says “Never has one man attained that status [Heavy weight boxing champion] with such a negligible range of Boxing skills” Tyson Fury that is, arguably the heavy weight with the widest range of overall Boxing skills actively fighting; embarrassing slip up number one for Howard.
Negating a dominant veteran, to the point of him being unable to throw one of his main weapons, the skull crumbling right hand, is all kinds of impressive. It was Tyson who thwarted Wladimir’s offence, not Wladimir.
I don’t read The Sun (or any newspapers) so can only judge Steven Howard off of this one article; he may be a former fighter or a Boxing historian, expert. I have no idea, and have little interest in researching. Unfortunately for him I have nothing but this article to form an opinion of his knowledge of the sport from, and that opinion is not a favourable one.
Steve Howard (Chief sports writer for The Sun) shows an extremely basic and stunted understanding of fight fundamentals for a sports writer of any kind, let alone a head one.
I would suspect Howard expected a large 6 foot 9 Heavyweight to throw hands like a flailing ape, and his opponent to respond in a similar fashion. When he saw clean Boxing skills and nimble footwork, his senses couldn't comprehend how, and why this was happening, a bit like Wladimir.
The fact Fury was fighting with meticulously planned execution, selective and crafty timing, muddle Howard’s pre conceived expectations of a heavyweight fighter. The skills on display seem even more unlikely for the fact they come from Batman suit wearing, in the ring singing, controversial and sometimes mentally unhinged Tyson Fury.
In the simplest and most honest terms, he doesn't appreciate talent, and is fairly ignorant toward Boxing in general, going off of this article he has written.
Again I can’t even to this day say I am a fan of Fury as a person all the time, but the last few fights as I stated across my videos and blogs, I had been warming to him slowly, even actually defending his comments regarding homosexuals here (all before he became champion note). I can now sever personal emotions and gripes toward a fighter, and appreciate well crafted talent when I see it.
Tyson Fury put on something close to a master class against a long reigning dominant, hard punching champion. He even looked close to stopping Wladimir in the later rounds. How a Chief sports writer for the most popular paper in the country could produce such an ill informed, ignorant piece is both embarrassing for the Sun, and embarrassing for Mr Howard.
Calling Wladimir Klitschko “a boring old Ukrainian” while tired; lazy and expected is not going to hit the controversial keys Howard intends to reach. People have been calling Wladimir boring for almost a decade; I don’t think Howard was aware of that.
“He couldn't even hit Fury” Writes Howard, as if this was somehow attributed to Wladimir’s incompetence, as opposed to affording Tyson Fury the due respect for executing a truly superb game plan written out by Peter Fury in at times, what looked like an effortless manner.
“Saturday night was a farce” continues the Chief sports writer for The Sun with increasing upset, scrabbling in a frenzy for some kind of sentence that will be more offensive then the last! “limp wristed” Fury’s performance is hilariously described as.
While all of these men are big enough and ugly enough to repel this type of hate filled article, the lack of any kind of respect for the feat Tyson has achieved and the Sun newspaper being so blatant about it, is shocking, and to me as a Boxing fan, not needed in the mainstream.
Both fighters made “Frank Bruno look like Muhammad Ali” Howard continues, his words approaching petulant infant levels of expressed upset. The article gets more bizarre and almost comedic as the clumsy sentences continue.
“one great immobile lummox supporting another” “those who attended the event were “mugs” and calling the most impressive showing in my opinion from a heavyweight in years “a night that shamed boxing” is pure unadulterated hatred.
Hatred some may say Fury deserves, due to a long string of foul mouthed statements littering his history in the sport. His political views and personal opinions are for another article, this is about the sporting achievement attempting to be smudged from its rightful placing.
The article can also be hi jacked to present the opposing view in a more recognised light. Having more eyes read the much needed counter argument then would have previously. So I’ll take that one then, thanks Steve.
“a truly painful descent into abomination that has befallen the division”
There are I suspect, deep rooted reasons this writer spews such sizzling bile toward Tyson Fury and his team. Known only to the writer himself, after all I had my reasons, I was offended, I wonder what Steven Howard’s reasons are. Pushing aside the easy and obvious accusation of the article being click bait, this kind of writing can influence the lazy who know little of our glorious sport.
The Sun newspaper is openly attempting to influence its readers against Tyson Fury, the reasons could be numerous. It’s not just this tabloid who is trying to deny Tyson his win. You would assume the love would be pouring in; and while from some quarters it is, from my own eyes; someone who consumes Boxing through every single media, every single day, there seems to be even more anger toward Fury now he’s lifted the belts.
Unexpected skills can confuse many, as they did Wladimir. The Tyson Fury puzzle has just got a whole lot more interesting and difficult to decipher, and Steven Howard demonstrates that the Anti-Fury mob (which I still hold an unfilled application to perhaps one day join again) have got more fire in their belly and more intent.
Myself, I am a fan of Boxing, and I thought the performance from Fury was unexpected and quite simply, amazing; genuinely. I'm fully expected to be offended by Tyson again in less then a few weeks, but I will not be able to deny his talents no matter how much he p*sses me off.
This is to be honest the most exciting era in heavyweight boxing in decades, a new, charismatic champion. Tyson Fury is at the top, who would have though it, not you, not me, not Wladimir and definitely not Steven.
Until the rematch gentlemen....
