A Guide To Figurative Language
starpillow_writes on Instagram - no reposts
Disclaimer: I am not a professional and this is all from research + what my teachers have taught me throughout my life.
1. What is Figurative Language?
starpillow_writes on ig
"Figurative language is phrasing that goes beyond the literal meaning of words to get a message or point across... Writers create figurative language through figures of speech..." - Masterclass
Figurative language is just dressing up words to convey a message to your readers in a nonconventional way! Although imagery and figurative language are connected, they are not the same thing since there are many devices that fall under the figurative category that do not display imagery.
Figurative lang is like flowery writing. You shouldn't be intimidated by it, but overusing it is NOT good.
2. Why Should You Use Figurative Language in Your Writing?
starpillow_writes on ig
Using figurative language makes the reader more engaged with the story or just the writing piece in general. When writing, you want the reader to enjoy looking over your piece instead of getting bored. So basically it's a really good idea to incorporate some different and unique language into your stories.
Using figurative language in poetry can elevate it and have it hit your readers' hearts or inspire them. Poetry is the perfect place to experiment with figures of speech since it can be loosely interpreted.
3. Types, Examples, and Definitions of Figurative Language
starpillow_writes on ig
Similes - a comparison using the terms 'like' or 'as'
The new teacher is as tall as a giraffe.
Metaphors - a comparison loosely comparing the terms and is quite often identified if there is a clear relationship between the words
The warrior has a heart of stone.
Hyperboles - a purposeful over exaggeration
I have told you a million times to wash the dishes.
Personification - giving human characteristics to nonhuman things or beings
The car stopped with a groaning complaint.
Idioms - common terms that native or fluid language speakers know that are not taken literally
Weâll cross that bridge when we come to it.
Puns - a play on words; using clever wordplay to usually bring comedic relief to a situation
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Symbolism - âwhen a word has its own meaning but is used to represent something entirely differentâ
Incorporating a red rose in your writing to symbolize love.
Alliteration - a repeat of the same sounds (of the first letter of each word) throughout a phrase or sentence
Betty bought butter but the butter was bitter, so Betty bought better butter to make the bitter butter better.
Onomatopeias - a figure of speech that names the sound of action or objects directly in the writing
Sound effects like âtick-tockâ and âding-dongâ are everyday examples, as well as words like âzapâ and âhiccup.â
Synecdoches - âa type of figurative language that uses one part to refer to the whole, or the whole to refer to the part.â
She would like to offer her hand in marriage.
The word hand in this situation is a synecdoche.
Allusion - when a figure of speech refers to another text, person, place, or event that occurs outside of the world
Weâve entered a Garden of Eden.
This is an allusion to the biblical place.
4. Common Mistakes
starpillow_writes on ig
Overusing Flowery Language
Some writers tend to overuse some of the devices listed above. This can lead to hard-to-read writing. The reader or even proofreader will grow tired quicker and this can even lead to annoyance. Seeing metaphor after metaphor for 50 pages is just--frankly--dumb. Basically, try your best to not overuse the same devices over and over again, or find a different way to state what you are trying to say.
Forgetting the Differences
Ah yes, English class. A lot of students forget the differences between a lot of categories above, and I can understand that since I do it too. As a writer, I never really have to differentiate between each of the devices BUT as a student I do. Annotating educational readings can be a pain and you need to know every figure of speech. Hopefully, this guide makes it better, not just for writers but for students too!
