me: im in colorguard

person: what is colorguard? arent you in band?

me: we spin flags and various weapons like rifle and saber and often spin while simultaneously having to dance and retain ballet skills alongside performance skills and remembering our drill spots!! and technically we are a part of the band unit, but we don't play music or anything like that. often times we just call ourselves band members just to save time with teachers and whatnot.

Guard Confession: Okay, this is the absolute most embarrassing and humiliating moment ever in my life, and I'd be nice to tell someone else. So, it was my first show (yes, my very first one), and right before the 3rd movement, I notice my flag isn't where it's supposed to be, so out of panic, I grab a different colored flag and performed with that one. I pray that no one in band remembers it clearly.

I’ve always wondered about things like this. What do instructors care more about? A hole in the form or a miscolored flag? I think I’d rather have a miscolored flag.

This actually happened in my guard once. A girl misplaced her flag and grabbed a different one. So while the rest of the guard had shiny gold flags, she had a purple one. On the judge’s tape they said “I love the flash of gold, but I’m not really sure what the purple flag is supposed to represent”. Well, my instructors then told us that of that ever happened again, stay where you are and wait until you can transition into the next part. They would rather have a mostly unnoticeable hole than a six foot flag that screams “I HAVE MADE A MISTAKE”. Either way, we’ve all made those embarrassing mistakes :)

everyone is always talking about the football players having to do two-a-days in the sweltering heat but aren’t the band kids practicing too, in just as hot uniforms, carrying sometimes big metal instruments half their size, marching in the sun, over and over? well this is just to say: we see you band kids, we know you’re busting yr butts. so come on in to the air conditioned denny’s after practice, and if you need an extra booth for all the tubas, we can probably accommodate you.

How would you feel if your school told you that you can’t be on your color/winter guard because of your height and weight?

If you currently march, do you consider yourself to have an athletic “look”? (DCI doesn’t count)

Would you bother auditioning for a team of you knew that they consider the way your body is?

Do you believe that bigger people are incapable of doing color guard?

Do you think it’s fair to not allow someone to perform mid-season because they gained 10 pounds since they auditioned for the team?
